My child started learning at 6yo. Took grade 2 exam same year 2020, and for this whole year she's been learning grade 3, not only the abrsm exam pieces but also many other pieces from other books. I find the progress too slow? Should I be concerned and suggest anything to the teacher?

DS’s progress is not uncommon. He tried DSA thru music but unsuccessful. DSA music is very competitive. Maybe you can discuss with her teacher and plan early. To stand a good chance for successful DSA you would probably require more then one instrument with high grade or with achievements in competition.

I think depends on individual. DS started learning piano at 7yo, took grade 1 exam same year, 8yo grade 3, 9yo grade 5, 11yo grade 8 and now 14 ARSM.

hi HCI parents and students, the S1 posting is currently underway. I’m keen to find out more about HCI for my child. He has scored AL6 with a merit in HCL (6M), i guess it translates to approx (259-261 +1?)
The indicative cut off for HCI under the new AL system is 4D - 7M hence I’m concerned that my child, even if he is able to get in, may not be able to cope with the workload.
I’ve read that HCI students are independent learners which worries me a little because i do have to nag at my boy to revise more at times.

Appreciate if anyone in similar situation can share how you/your child’s experience is like

Hi, congratulations to your ds with his psle results. Just to share a bit here. My ds is currently a HC student going Sec 3 next year. Back in primary school he isn’t a high achiever and he needs constant reminders to study. His psle result is similar to your son’s based on your translation. In fact most of his classmates’ psle results are around there or lower. After joining HC he has become more responsible and discipline with his work. I would say he met a bunch of supportive peers and teachers in HC. His class was not in the best performing consortium but on a whole, their class generally performed well with about 1/3 of his class joining the special program like SMTP,HP,BSP and CTP in upper Sec. Is your dd this year JC1 or JC 2 at HC? From your opinion, is the GATE programme manageable- how much time, individual/group research, projects are involved? Can the student withdraw from the programme in the event cannot cope with it? My dd is not under DSA, as she is S4 @ NYGH promoting to HCJC next year. Currently the school is sending emails about all kinds of scholarships & special programmes to apply. I am more worried the tougher part of learning experience once she is in any of the programmes , as it is more fast paced & advanced. :faint: I am also not so sure if she is really a good fit even if she gets through the criterial/selection test. She always have that sudden motivation & enthusiasm in something, but hard to stay through.

My Dd is in JC1 at HC. According to my Dd, the GATE program is generally manageable. In fact, it stretches them well and appropriate because in the Covid times now, they no longer have electives to go out of school to learn different things. Instead, the enrichment is mostly done by the teachers allocated to the class during their explanations or lecturing in class. So in that sense, it’s more flexible. As for research project, they have a compulsory one called the SMTP-GATE project where they have to come up with an area of interest and produce a research report on that. This project will be graded and replaces 5% of your entire year’s grade. There will be curriculum time allocated on a Thursday every 2 weeks in my DD’s case where time is blocked out for them to do the project, so managing the commitment level wise, it is still alright. You are not allowed to withdraw from the program if you cannot cope. Generally, if the school selects your Dd, it should mean that coping in the SMTP-GATE program shouldn’t be too much of an issue. My DD’s CT is pretty confident none of them in her class has issues coping, all are coping decently well. But how well you would define as coping well would depend on individual levels’ commitment in other areas such as leadership / CCA / SL project as well as the individual’s expectation level. Learning is mostly self paced and a lot of independent studying, pace is usually manageable but if the class is faster then the pace will be faster. Hope this helps. My Dd doesn’t regret joining. Met a bunch of supportive and like-minded classmates so it’s pretty amazing. Just continue coping til JC2

Understand that for students to be eligible in SMTP/GATE at Hwa Chong JC, the subject requirement are IP results < 2.0 & excel in selection test. But before that, one must consistently excel in either 2 Math or Science subject (SMTP); or 1 Math/Science (GATE). So does it mean as in high A1for each test & exam? Or overall for that particular subject? What is the range 80%, 85% or 90% and above that are considered excel in the subject?

Dd is in GATE program. If your daughter is invited to join the program (DSA), then be sure that it is a good fit for her. Otherwise, mostly the students that meet the criteria will take the selection tests and the school will make use of both the performance in the selection tests as well as the students’ school examination performance to make a holistic decision on accepting the student into the program or not. As for the way of learning in the program, it depends on which SMTP/GATE class you are allocated because the extensions are mostly done by teachers so they will pace the extensions according to the class’s performance. For instance, my Dd is in GATE Chemistry, in this case she takes the biology lectures with other classes but she does not take the chemistry ones with the cohort. Instead, her teacher will guide them through the topics briefly and extend where he sees it applicable.

Hi Imp75, your elder dd in JC 1 right? How's she coping in HC? May I ask what's her subj combi & CCA? Is the life in HCJC as hectic as NYGH? Or more hectic? How's her school curriculum hours like?

She's doing PCME like most regular students, no specials. Switched from sports to performing arts, so was bz with SYF earlier on, now took up leadership pos. Work is definitely more fast-paced in JC.
