    • RE: Upset with home math tutor

At the 2 student care centers which i volunteered, both the P3 and P4 students do not know the time tables by hard. So for some simple questions that needs multiplication or division they are unable to get the answers. I think getting the child to memorise time tables is one area parents can help their child to improve Math.

    • RE: 2019 PSLE Discussions and Strategies (Children born in 2007)

My personal opinion about tuition is to observe which is the weak subject your child need help. If the child is already strong in some subjects then just let him/her be attentive in class n learn what is taught in school. Over reliance on tuition may not a good thing, besides spending large amount of money and travelling time to tuition center.

    • RE: Transfer photo from Samsung phone to laptop

Does anyone know how to transfer photos and videos from Samsung S7 Edge to laptop while preserving the date it was taken? I tried to transfer but the Date Taken takes on the date of photo transfer. Please advise. Thanks

    • RE: IP vs O level

Totally agree with what AppleCrumble said a few post back that parent should make the decision together with their child. Afterall it is the child who is going to study, not the parent. But as parent, it is important to guide the 12 year old (still wet behind the ears) in decision making, so that the child will make an INFORMED choice. I think that is the key.

For the boy with 277 score, though it is unfortunate he or his parent decided on accepting DSA to non-RI school, he has to change his attitude. It is regrettable that he cannot go to RI with his stellar result but he need to learn to move on (live with the decision) and give his best. He probably can ace the non-RI IP school and come up top if he put in effort and put away resentment. Why not strive for being the top in his current school? It will be an achievement /target he can work towards. Going to RI may be even more stressful for him.
As for O level or IP, if the child can make the grade to IP, why not? Of course, the child must also want it. If unsure, good to check out the schools which offer dual tracks. In my son’s school, O level and IP track study the same thing in first 2 yrs, except IP need to do some projects. Then if the child does not feel he/she is suitable for IP, it is easy to just switch to O level track. So there is an ‘escape’ route. I tend to agree with some forumer that some top tier IP school is tough and have heavy workload. Not all kids can take that sort of stress so parents really need to observe and judge whether their child need help (tuition, counselling) or need to switch out of IP. Bottom line is that the child can cope. I hope not to hear of any student committing suicide because of study stress. It is very sad.

    • RE: P1 Tution -- Necessary?

I think it all depends on the kid. If he/she fail the subject then maybe you consider tuition if yoi cannot teach the subject yourself. More important is to cultivate learning and reading habit from young. Teach the child to do homework and study/read at fix time, say after dinner. Play time can be after that. Don’t let the kid rely too much on tuitor. Need to learn how to learn.

May I ask how much allowance to go per day?

I think $8 to $10 per day would be a good gauge. Normally DS would take lunch from school then go home.

My son gets $50 a week which includes recess and lunch and sometimes dinner if CCA ends late. Will give him more if he runs out of money. Need to be more flexible because being teenagers, sometimes he and classmates will eat out as a group so I will give additional if he asks for it.

    • RE: Where to get white sch shoes other than bata?

      straffan23:
Try Dr Kong (recommended by podiatrist),

Skechers (try buying direct from Amazon).

Dr Kong cost about $80 - $100 ... but they spend so much time in that pair of shoes... It should be worth getting a really good one, right? Skechers cost the same or slightly more, but if you purchase from Amazon directly, it could be half the price.
May I know where I can buy Dr Kong shoe?
