Hi all,

My dd is shortlisted too..for dance(non-ballet). Would any parents or SOTA students share their experience on what to expect during the TA for this?

      Thanks in advance:))

Hi, I'm a year one dance student. I got in through non-ballet. So basically, the dance audition is split into two parts: Introduction to Ballet/Movement Audition and Individual Specialized Audition.

The Introduction to Ballet/Movement is to see how well you can pick up new movements and whether you would be able to cope with ballet, as ballet is the basis of all dances and is learnt through all six years in SOTA. This part of the audition is like an open class, and there will be a teacher watching the class. So to prepare for this, just come with an open mind, be dillegent with your stretching before class and have fun!

The Individual Specialized Audition is basically just you dancing your solo in front of a panel of teachers. So smile and again, have fun.

Both auditions will be recorded on video, but don't feel intimidated. You want the teachers to feel that you love dancing.

PS: do come and say hi to me as I'm the videographer for the non-ballet auditions.

      Good luck! (Have fun)

      Hi yip33!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It is always great to hear from a student 😄
Appreciate all your sharing my dear!
We went for the dance showcases and we were blown away! Fwaah! Can understand their long hours now...

      :rahrah: :rahrah: :rahrah:

Now wondering if my dd can ever reach those standards.... 🤷 more like if she can even get in like that.

Same here! I watched all 3 shows! The standard is amazing!

Dance and Theatre - May I know, does every girl get to perform? Is everyone that good just because of the long hours they put in? Most of the dancers look like they are very outgoing, extrovert and really enjoying their dance. But I am sure there are a few more introvert ones and not performance-oriented. Are they being trained to perform?

I think the dancers were already the outgoing, extroverted ones who enjoy performing in the first place. Think it sounds like what they look out for at the TA.
Hi!I watched the dance showcases and yes...the dancers were simply a joy to watch! The high standard was really apparent and it was obvious that the sheer hard work, commitment and long hours contributed to the impressive performances/dances.

I guess different personalities exist in SOTA just like everywhere else..it just gets better with experience and lots of practice and opportunities to perform!

      Hello JRLam,

My daughter will be aiming for dance(non ballet)faculty as wellshe's been doing competitive Latin dance since 7 years old. Used to do ballet in her pre- nursery years till Grade 2 but dropped it off since she discovered Latin dance.Currently doing other dance genre as well like hiphop, jazz, contemporary.oh well.. Guess she wants to try every dance n I can only support her passion.
From my awareness, there will be talks,Q & A,showcases? Been reading through this thread fr pg 1 😄

Hi everyone, we have just registered for the Open Symposium which will be on this Friday,13th April. As my daughter who’s in Primary 4 this yr is set on her goal to be part of the SOTA cohort… Lol… Yes, she decided that she wants to be in SOTA since she’s in Primary 2!! So we decided to sign up and see for ourselves what the environment would be like and for my daughter to experience and hear more on what commitment and dedication is required in order to be one of SOTA’s students. For those interested go to the school’s website and reg. for the Open Symposium… Even though it is stated that reg. is closed on 6th April… we still managed to confirmed our attendance;))
