Some parents worry about time taken for CCA leaving sec sch kids no time for academic.


Maybe just share some positive perspectives :-

1. Physical exercises keeps them sweating & maintains good body circulation, brings oxygen thro'out body & up to brains (they studied in primary science). They'll study better with good health & endorphins (esp for those who are happy & enjoys their CCA)

2. It helps build a good active habit, which I believe & hope stays with them lifelong. A sedantory lifestyle brings with it loads of diff types of illness, poor circulation, lack Vit D, clog up arteries, etc) we hear if esp once they get out into the working world rut.

3. In their teenage days, they shld start learning to manage their time well. Year 1 & Yr 2 may be feeling their way around & finding a footing. By Year 3, they shld hv found some footing and begin to be more confident & responsible for their learning, sporting tasks/achievement goals, and managing themselves & emotions till their final Year 6 or JC years.

4. I always think, if my kids are doing CCAs in safety of school grounds, it certainly beats having them on screen games or gallivanting in shopping malls or waste time at coffee outlets! Coming home tired is a given when they work hard enuf, but overtime, once they get use to it & catering for their teenage growing years, they'll overcome it.

Just my own thinking as I learn to let go & trust them. :love:

I have been thinking if I should write something here after reading a comment on my child’s ex-tutor posted here but was not feeling well. Then recently, my child and my nephew told me that they were going to visit the ex-tutor during the school holidays as they did not visit her on Teacher’s Day so I was reminded of the post I read.


I showed my child and my nephew the post. Both said, "Probably a misunderstanding la. Teacher Serena will not humiliate the child." I asked them why they said that. They shared that this ex-tutor of theirs had the habit of using the marked worksheet of a pupil sitting near the teacher’s table and her own typed answer key to go through corrections with the class. My child’s worksheet was used before too as he sat near the teacher’s table. I did not know that until the recent conversation. A few questions in the worksheet were not answered properly and one of the friends in the class actually made a comment that was not very kind. Teacher Serena scolded the child.

I guess every child may react to the same tutor or even school teacher different. Every child may also react to a similar situation differently.

My child, my nephew and a few children of friends who studied there actually benefitted a lot from the tutor. She is strict, that is true.She is very frank when she communicates with the parents. That is her style. She also informed us the topics that have Science experiments during parents’ briefing done at the start of the year. She told us she would not conduct experiments for some topics like those on body systems. She is not the "wayang" type so she told us that she or the kids would conduct the experiments so that the class can understand the concepts better. She has her expectations of the kids and will tell the kids if they fall short of expectations. But interestingly, my child and my nephew told me that it is for their own good. I am glad that my child had learnt a lot of study techniques that can be used even now. I know a number of her ex-tutees and their parents would visit her on or near Teacher’s Day. I saw that while waiting for my child to end class a few years ago. All I can say is that one is lucky to meet a tutor who has a heart for the kids.

Hi, i'm intending to enroll my P4 and P5 ( next year) into the new center at Yishun. Any feedback on how homework is for 3 hours of intensive class? I'm concern about the amount of homework that they will be bringing home. their current 1-1 tutor give homework like crazy.

So long as you help them keep up with their 听写默写 & 作文 改正。They'll feel confident following lessons. In fact, bcoz once they handle weekly 听写默写 well, it'll delight them coz they'll see themselves getting good marks for sch 听写默写. I feel this usually brings up the confidence of kids.

Then, if u can & know how to use the weekly 作文 & 口试 materials for revision, you can just go thro during sch holidays. The contents can be used interchangeably as it's got similar 开头 结尾 。 You can chat with yr child on 内容 & train the child to use it flexibly so that they don't just route learn & can write even when PSLE topics are twitched.

A few friends sent their kid to 汪 and said it's good. But they did say that the kids must have stamina as lessons are long. If the kids are weaker and are not so keen in Chinese, then may have to look for alternatives.

Heard from my neighbour’s child that most of the Science PSLE questions are rather simple as he did similar questions during his Tuition class and he revised the tuition files thoroughly. He was so happy and told me that the tutor went through questions on dengue and some other questions tested in the PSLE. However, another friend’s child knew that he had done the questions at the same Tuition class but he did not know how to do some of them as he did not revise.


So I think the child has to revise what they learn. Otherwise it will be be money wasted.

ACSJ has scout. But because there is balloting process, so depends on your luck to get in. My DC attends the scouts and he likes it. As a scout or girl guides, one can form their own group to do the activities during the school holiday just to earn the badges. I did that for my child.

Serena Greenhouse. My DCs were there. Their writing improved greatly as the teachers taught them writing skills explicitly. I remember my DC telling me about learning how to expand a moment etc They do not have many classes so may not have vacancies. One of my neighbours contacted the centre recently but there was no vacancy for her child’s level.

We live at Lakeside area and within 1 km is only Lakeside primary sch. I was from River Valley Primary (RVPS). We are considering the following options:
1) go for RVPS in phase 2A & send her to student care.
2) use my in law’s address to register for Rulang which is within 1 km under phase 2C. I’m not sure if I can still send her to student care since I registered using their address.
3) go for Lakeside primary under phase 2c.

Which option would u go for?

I would go for option 1 if I have private transport to send her to school in the morning. Option 2 - u can try this if you go for PV or Grassroots

Melbourne is good option. Puffing billy, farm stay, chocolate factory, science museum.

My kiddos were at serena greenhouse. They improved a lot in creative writing as the teachers really taught the kids writing skills. They also conduct oral lessons during the creative writing classes. Paper 2 classes - Comprehension skills were taught and exposure to different and challenging synthesis questions.Thumbs up
