My DS is Jh2, the GPA is below 3.0. is this consider no good?

I guess as long as it does not fall below 2 should be OK.In my DS class for 2012 there were 3/4 in Deans list last term and this term not a single one.Most were in the 2.9 to less than 4 in myDS class. What a toughie.There seems to be only 1 in the Deans list 4.0 or > for the whole JH2 cohort is it true?Not sure which class.Biggest casualty was LA-the Dean is a PhD and determined to prepare the students for A level standards as of now.When I looked at the paper it seems more of University standards. Also the standard for Science is very much higher than RI and Hwa Choong IP program from what I hear from secondary school science teachers.

Thks for the info on Sch strengths n DSA matters. My DD is strong in her languages. I wld think she will do well in humanities. Though she has been scoring above 85 consistently for her Maths n Sci, they are still not her forte. She puts in a considerable amt of time n effort to do well in Math n Sci but for the languages, she just has the flair n cld score even with min effort.


In view of that, then is NJC which is strong in Maths n Sci still suitable for her?

Off course there are opportunities in Humanities BUT she has to work harder on Maths and Science as well. Students cover mostly sec 2 and some sec 3 syllabus in Maths and Science in year 1 itself. So they are min. 1 year or 2 years ahead of their peers in normal sec.schools. Even offering Humanities they still need to offer 2 sciences at A level :imcool:

1.I'm a P6 student and I want to go to NJC by DSA.I'm having a difficulty choosing academics,music or sports to DSA with.I can't be choosing academics as I failed my maths last year and I know NJC standard is all As.I don't learn any music lessons and neither taking up martial arts!I'm also not in Track and Field!What should I do?What will they ask during the interview?

NJC students generally have solid foundation in Maths and Science no matter whether by DSA or PSLE results. By DSA you need to qualify in the written test which shows your RANKING overall.Only after that your practical problem solving skills is tested and an interview takes place where you have to prove or show promise that you can make it in the high ability environment.Opportunities are fantastic in non-conventional areas of holistic development and scientific inquiry as the years progress.Selected students have opportunities to pursue their interest in all fields by advanced studies of their liking. NJC's strength is in Science where they can be attached to A star/NUS/NTU/or go to Moscow/Japan/Korea etc where they have arrangements.Some of the attachment institutions are shared by NUS High school as well. This will give you an idea what they are looking for. From what I came to know those from IP program after PSLE, All students are streamed for Science with the exception of 1 class for Humanities i.e 2012 batch.This will throw some light on what will be expected by the College from prospective students for the coming years. :imcool:

I am not sure if that is so. Discussion with a teaching staff revealed that current acceleration involves projects and Olympiad style practices much less on fixed syllabus.More students will be joining the acceleration in JH2 and wonder how it will be tailored if they had missed JH1 acceleration

In JH1 this year, Banding for Chinese and Maths only. Maths is between every 2 classes and Chinese among every 4. It just makes it easier for the teachers to teach at diff pace. Those really good at Maths then do an accelerated Maths programme. This is another plus for NJ, no one can complain that they only give best resources to the good one

I understand those on accelerated Maths are chosen based more than just being good in Maths.They band all students under greek alphabets and best students are also classified and the few chosen among the best should be passionate, diligent and complete their work on time and they want to participate and express their wish to do so.I was told many students don't want it even though they are good for various reasons but they attend regular Maths class together with those on acceleration .

Definitely not banded based on PSLE score.

We were told by one teacher that class grouping is based on the child's learning profile. Think there was a learning profile done during the orientation camp. Class grouping was decided after the orientation camp (if I did not remember incorrectly :oops: )

In DS's case, he and his classmates knew which class they were going to even before they did the profiling. I recall I was quite puzzled then. During the dean's speech, she mentioned the learning profiling and I thought they were going to group the kids according to their learning habits. After that I didn't bother anymore. Not important to me so long as DS is happy. And he sure is a very happy boy :)[/quote]
True it is not based on PSLE scores.Even if it is,there is not much difference between student abilities as they are in the top 5% of PSLE cohort.
1st semester 2012 performance listed JH 102 top in HCL followed by JH104,
JH106 top in Maths followed by JH108.
JH103 top in IS(science) followed by JH106.
JH108 top in LA(English) followed by JH105.
JH107 top in ART followed by JH108.
Top scorer in Maths and English is from JH108.
Top scorer in Science from JH104,
Top scorer in Higher Tamil JH103, Top scorer in Higher Malay from JH106.
Top scorer in ART from JH103 and JH105.
Except for JH101 where I suspect many athletes are located the rest of all the classes are quite evenly distributed in abilities.

I understand the top overall student from 2012 cohort Finals will be most probably be from JH108 and its girl power, the boys are just a minority.We will just wait and see in a couple of days. The differences are only marginal in most instances not substantial.Hope this throws some light.

Do anyone know the credit values for GS,Music,Maths,Sci,IH etc for JH1 2012 in the final computation of GPA. Is there any value for A+,B+,C+ or just the credit values for ABC.

Is NJC basing credits on 4.0 scale or 4.2 scale?Any help will be much appreciated.

The most accurate answer can be obtained simply by calling BibiBaba.

We only bought the PE attire twice, during 2010 JH1 orientation day & beginning of JH2- both times from the school bookshop.

I can confirm BibiBaba DOES NOT sell the Polo T. I called them last week.

The Book shop sells PE attire and polo shirts and badges whereas Bibi and Baba sells only uniforms and ties.

Each class only have 24 students. And here goes...only 6 boys in every class. The ratio follows throughout. i'm part of the majority. we are sitted in round tables, 3 girls to one boy.

Ya....I am only in JH1, so may not be able to tell you alot but lemme tell you, LA was difficult initially.

Er... you mean you didn't know this? No need to be so \"kuai\" to sit 1 boy to 3 girls at each table lah. I think by 2nd half of the year, it might change. I remember my boy saying that the girls were so noisy, that he just packed up his things with the other boys and sat in front at a table by themselves so they could concentrate on the lessons.


BTW, I don't see any misconceptions discussed?

The only difference this year from our children's year is the slight changes made to the CAFE programme, that's all.

If still into swimming then I really don't know.NJC has canoeing/dragon boat teams and I recall being told so that it's a hot shot top team.Cheers
