Hi dragonfly1976, So your ds may transfer in after passing Round 2? Congratulations. Yes, the school allows CCAs from P1; there is a Robotics Club which I'm sure will welcome your ds. The school usually schedules a CCA Open House in Jan. After which, children can choose their CCAs via the online portal MCOnline. Generally, you are allocated whatever you choose. This information can be found on the NH home page.

      thanks minecrafter.

      Parentalwarning:

      Fake GEP kids. :rotflmao:

Some perspective maybe. The shortlisted kids after the first round are about the TOP 10% of their cohort academically. Give or take. Assuming the test purports to do what it does then the successful second rounders are the TOP 1% of the whole cohort or if you will the TOP 10% of the TOP 10%.
If I take it that your statement is true that you can \"cheat\" or hack the iq test lets throw in a 400% error margin for these \"fake\" geppers. Which makes them the TOP 5% of their cohort at worst. Whichever way you cut it these are still impressive kids. Certainly smarter than me (ok that doesn't say much - scratch that)

Fake GEP kids :rotflmao: - priceless 😂

Thank you. You brought up an excellent point. Is the GEP intended to support the top 1% academic achievers of the cohort? If that is so, then it should be called HAP. The high ability programme. Not the gifted education programme. Or better, the \"Super Express Stream\". Then there will be no quarrels over how they got to be there - through good IQ and hard work. And by all means, go get whatever enrichment you can afford to get your kids to make the cut.

If the GEP is truly intended for gifted children, then getting trained to make the cut simply makes a farce of the whole affair. What makes it worse is that even the parents of truly gifted children are worried that their children are not selected, and hence send their children to be enriched just in case. An arms race between parents with gifted children trying to be that \"1 %\". A service provider's wet dream. Never mind that it corrupts the stated intent of the GEP.

Or maybe I'm just too naive about the true purpose of the GEP. Maybe you are right. Maybe it is for the top 1% of our \"best\" students. So I guess I'd just shut up and go set up a training centre to take advantage of this huge demand.

other than GOD, how can a few simple exams precisely find out the 1% of the \"Gifted kids\"?

    • RE: GEP 2015 - Screening & Selection

I wonder if the schools know all these unnecessary bullying/superiority/inferiority complexes due to one test that is " designed" by MOE that "certify" 9 yr old kids as gifted, near gifted or NOT gifted. For other exams like O level, it just measures your mastery of the subject and you can retake it but for this test, you are labelled for a considerable length of time.If you are good in Chinese and Science at age 9 but don’t read much English stuff , you are highly not gifted based on this test.

After reading some of the posts, i really feel shocked what the 9 yr olds are facing in schools nowadays and all these happening before Children’s Day. I almost think we should have some 101 survival kits or some nice articles bookmarked for affected kids and parents. Like how to survive when all yr good friends pass round 1 and call you names/ if you are the only one or two in class who didn’t clear round 1 / after you take prep course and still didn’t pass round 1 and can’t face your parents/ didn’t pass round 2 when your parents desperately want you to clear etc . Maybe they should rename the test or manage everyone’s expectation upfront.

And lastly perhaps a declaration at the end of the round 2 test stating if you have attended an intensive professional prep course so that the examiner can do a research if the results are affected . And i remembering seeing one post on kids who need meal voucher, I also wish to know if they can succeed in this system and I sincerely hope they will like what we did in the past.[/quote]

life is tough, there are many "unnecessary bullying/superiority/inferiority complexes" here and there, how are we going to deal with them? to cancel all the test and competition? how about SA1 and SA2 every year. As parents, whether we have done enough to assure our kids to have the right attitude toward the success and failure in our life?
for most people on this forum, we are not relaxed parents already. no need to complain why, think about how, as pointed out by one of the previous posts.

      like this a lot.

      ABPhappy:
Maybe we should not attach a negative connotation to the word 'prep'. I personally feel there is nothing wrong with sending the child to classes to expose them to some of the questions.

I agree with Pen88n in that some parents are so good at creating a stimulating environment at home since young that the child is naturally prepped. E.g. if the Dad/Mom is a maths professor, loves to solve IQ maths patterns and ropes the child in, the child is prepped, or if the Dad/Mom loves to read and develops that interest in the child, the child is being prepped too. Others like myself, am totally clueless/swamped at work and so leave it to the professionals to give them some exposure. hee hee :moneyflies: :siam:

There are various scenarios and outcomes in this exercise:
      1) Child is not gifted - prepped - cannot get in (my DS1)
      2) Child is not gifted - not prepped - cannot get in (most common)
      3) Child is not gifted - prepped - get in (may possibly suffer unless parents continue to assist)
      4) Child is not gifted - not prepped - get in (unlikely)
      5) Child is gifted - prepped - cannot get in (unfortunate)
      6) Child is gifted - not prepped - cannot get in (this is what most parents are afraid of :gloomy: )
      7) Child is gifted - prepped - get in (my DS2)
😎 Child is gifted - not prepped - get in (best case scenario but most likely have super parents who prep since day zero)

So...because we are all KS parents, it would be hard to accept that zero prep is needed.
