Hi duckeroo,

Fyi , it’s actually still possible to dsa just using 1.6km results . During last year dsa there r 2 TOP sch really asked for 1.6km results . And there were 2 whom I know really got in via dsa TnF using 1.6km results. So anything is possible . U don’t need to b in tnf in order to b a good runner. Sorry to add on , these 2 previously r not in TnF cca n don’t have any prior track competition records. For long dist, most sch didn’t assess them during dsa trial so 1.6km is a good gauage
Can I pls ask r the 2 students male or female? Do u happen to know their 1.6km estimated timing? Eg 5min+, 6min+, 7min+

Also is it possible to share which are the 2 top sch u talking about pls? If it is not convenient to post it here, u can also pm me pls.

Lastly, do u have any idea of how they are coping now in t&f after their successful dsa?

Sorry to ask u so many questions but I'm interested to find out cos the circumstances of these 2 students sounds somewhat similar to my dd. So any info you can share would b very helpful pls. Thk u vy much

Wow it does seem your daughter has some background already in sports. Why not join a track and field trainer and get some advice and also training during june holidays. Its a good sport to do anyway from all that studying for psle. I always see a lot of children running in the Evans Road MOE track. They train under some private athletic company. My apologies I don't know the company name. But I guess you could google. It's also good for your girl to see if she really likes running and get an idea.
For example I ask my child to consider the fact that if she does music DSA, she is doing \"stationary\" sports. It may sound good to some kids but my child know that she may be miserably looking out of the window and seeing kids freely running and jumping actively.

We wanted to let my dd join a t&f club but she doesn't have the time to spare cos she is at the pool at least 4 to 5 times a week, has tuition for all 4 subjects and during the term, she has to stay back in sch for supplementary n cca 4 times a week too. Hubby and myself always joke that her schedule is like a full time working adult 😂

However, I must add we r not tiger parents cos that we did not force this schedule upon her and she choose it herself. We always remind her tt it is ok to skip trainings if she is tired but she seldom does so

Under 8min for 1.6 is good but not uncommon.
That being said, no harm trying for dsa track because not everyone under 8 min are going to apply.
Pri track pupils in our sch did under 8min for 1.6 and less than 3 of them applied for track dsa.
Were the 3 track pupils successful in their dsa application and received a CO? Possible to share which schools did they applied for? Thk u vy much

Thks everyone for your replies. Let me try to answer all your questions and to share abit more about dd as well 🙂

My dd was told by her PE teacher that her timing is among the top few in her entire cohort (inclusive of both boys and girls) as she completed her run in 7min +

Also, a friend of mine who is a part time track coach wanted her to join his club after seeing her timing but we have to kiv due to upcoming Psle & her other commitments. Another friend who is an ex champion cross country/ middle/ long distance runner back in her sec sch told me tt my dd's timing is actually faster than what she clocked when she was 12yo.

All did not mentioned about dsa but advise us to let her join track cca next yr as with guidance and training she can improve & do even better.

My dd is currently doing competitive swimming externally since last yr and she trains 4 to 5 times a week. So she is used to the demands of putting in long hours in training. We r not considering dsa in swimming because she did not make the finals in the primary sch swim meet last week and her acad results r not good enough to survive in the schools which offer swimming as dsa too.

Anyway some of the schools we r looking at have both leadership and t&f/ cross country for dsa. So we are wondering is it better for her to apply under track or leadership. Which domain stands a higher chance of getting shortlisted for the 2nd round of dsa?

I will speak to her teacher soon about her chances of dsa using her run timing and will also enquire about the selection criteria for dsa in track/ x country when we visit any school open house in future.

Thanks again everyone for your help and info 🙂

I’ll try to put in some perspective for you.

Is your daughter’s timing good? Yes.
Good enough to win a medal? Not even close.

https://nsg.moe.edu.sg/Public/posts/20190315142501952/attachments/Session_10_%2815032019%29.pdf (the closest distance to your daughter timing for comparison). The 16th place - just under 6 mins. Therefore, your daughter would need to shave off more than a minute just to make the final. It is doable BUT she will be looking at drills, sets, etc for the next 2 years (for C Div).

Unfortunately, this is where it gets difficult where DSA is concerned. While your daughter has shown that she is able to put in the hours for swimming (which probably account for her overall superior fitness), there is no guarantee nor did her provide any evidence that she would be willing to do the same for x-country / mid-distance running. DSA is not like joining a CCA - if you are not happy, you can quit. To DSA, she would need to prove that she enjoys track work and can last the distance of 4 years. Right now, she may not even have an idea of what track & field training is like. Thus, this is the selector’s dilemma: if she is offered a CO based on raw talent, but she turns around and says she dislike track work after starting school / knowing what’s track & field about, then how? If she wants to pass the selectors’ smell test, and that is even before we get to the point where we can start talking about improving the timing, she should take the coach’s suggestion and join a club.

In general, the domain that she would stand a higher chance of getting selected for round 2 is the domain that she can show proof of achievement / discipline / dedication / hard work. If 1600m timing is all that she can go by, sorry, that may be good enough for her to join a school’s track & field team in future but it won’t be good enough to DSA. You don’t DSA to a school in order to join a sport; you join a sport in order to DSA to a school.

Thk u for your input. It is a vy good reality check for me and I appreciate it. My dd did express interest in joining track as she has 2 cousins currently doing t&f at pri level and most of my side of the family were in t&f cca back when we were in sec sch too. Hence, she could be tempted to join t&f after hearing so much about our positive experience.

Like what you have mentioned, I will definitely need to share with her about how tough training actually is, the reality of track competitions, the differences between track & swimming trainings & most importantly, I will need to remind her that dsa is a 4 yrs long contract with the school before we even think of applying for t&f/ x-country 🙂

Under the new DSA system, you can apply to 2 different talent areas in the same school. So you can apply to both T&F as well as leadership - it's not mutually exclusive.

https://beta.moe.gov.sg/dsa/application/
- You can indicate up to 3 choices and 3 talent areas.
- You may indicate up to 2 talent areas for the same secondary school. If you are keen to apply for 2 talent areas offered by the school, you must indicate both talent areas as separate choices.

Thk u for the info. I find that this yr is quite tough cos of the 3 choices limit. But no choice just have to work with what is given 🙂

Wow it’s quite rare to be both fast in the water & fast on land (usually they are mutually exclusive haha). Wishing all the best for your girl!
Thk u for your well wishes. I actually wish she can b faster in her studies instead 😂 cos right now she rather do sports than study and when we talk about sec sch, she is just concern about the cca they have

• RE: DSA 2019

Hi,

My dd has always been sporty and does different sports. She recently developed an interest in running/ track & in her recent napfa test, she completed her 1.6km run pretty fast. We were told by others tt her timing is vy good and tt she shd take up running/ track when she enters secondary school next yr.

So we want to check if anyone dsa via track or cross country b4 can pls share some info. Also, will it be risky to use 1 choice to apply for dsa under cross country or track & field?

Currently, she can only dsa under leadership for being a cca leader but we heard that leadership is a vy difficult domain to dsa for. Hence, we r looking at alternatives.

Appreciate any help or info pls. Thk u vy much
