Congratulations! My son is in yr 3 is currently on the SMP. The GE branch has a list of projects with external mentors released in phases. For each phase, participating teams (consisting of 3 members each from different schools) will have to select 5 projects they are interested in and submit online (with full justifications on why you think u should be allocated this project). If they are not selected for phase 1 projects, they are subjected to phase 2, 3 etc.

From my son's experience, it is obvious that the number of participating teams grossly outnumbered the number of available projects. A lot of time is taken up discussing amongst group members on which projects to choose and if unsuccessful, the tedious cycle repeats.

Cant remember offhand how many ACSI teams there were... (like 5?) but in the end, only 1 team was allocated a project. The rest of the teams had to settle for internal SMP (mentored by ACSI teachers)- with 1 chosen by GE branch for funding.

The SMP is taken as ISO for year 3. (I remember for yr 2, IVP - also organised by the GE Branch, was the equivalent for SMP)

Besides putting aside time to meet up with mentors, deadlines for deliverables to the GE branch are strict. Above this, it is compulsory for the participants to attend SMP seminars (eg. SMP opening ceremony, How to prepare for poster presentation, etc.)

Besides the tedious process of project selection and mentor matching which i felt was unproductive, I guess it is overall a gd exposure (and yes, certainly adds colour to your resume. :evil: ).

Eddy123: The SMP at ACS(I) is designed to fast-track students towards winning Olympiad medals or the equivalent at science fairs of various kinds. It's good if you like that kind of thing, and ACS(I)'s programme under the supervision of Mdm Yong Lee Har (one of your deputy principals) is pretty good at biological sciences. Just remember that it's a heavy investment in time. All the best!

Hi! I’m a year 2 student in ACSI IP this year, and was recently selected for the ‘Science Mentorship Programme’. It is a special programme organised by the GE branch and is only open to some of the top scorers in the Mid-Year Exams this year. However, after attending a briefing conducted by some teachers, I am unsure of whether I should take part in this course.
