      Wendy LOH:
what is the chances of applying PLMGS since im catholic. but im not staying within 1-2KM.. possible to get under phase 2B?

Chances are slim. I'm Catholic too but got my daughter in this year because we are within 1km. Even then, at that time almost all 72 vacancies within 1km were filled at the last minute. I was number 67 at 3.45pm on the last day of registration.

You have better chances with IJ's...Plmgs is a Methodist school, priviledge is for Methodists only. IJ is a Catholic school.

      All the best!

Yesterday attended the Primary One Orientation and the feeling was great. However, there will be a change of principal. Don't know whether is the new principal is as good as the current one.

thank you edgrace and pokoyoko for your replies. thank you too for suggesting Victoria as i didn't know about it. I assumed from the school's name that it was for girls ;-D. Will check out more info from the website.

regarding montfort, the website info really looks good. may I ask edgrace in which year your child is already in?
      Hi all,

My kids will be in P5 and P3 next year πŸ™‚ phew..exams are over... finally! We joined the Montfort family in 2013..

As for St Pat's and CHIJ, lol..but yes, so true, but who can blame them these teenagers? πŸ˜› No, i'm not staying in the east... but north east. And there is a direct bus to Victoria or St Pat...

And yes, it's not about boys school..It's because we are Catholics too, and MOntfort upholds very strong Catholic values.. in fact the Principal mentioned during orientation... more like a reminder actually., (quote)\"Please remember that we ARE a Catholic school and we have masses and prayers, so if you are not comfortable with your children attending masses please think again. As for prayers, there is morning and after school prayers, Hail Mary over the PA system\" (unquote).. hahahha.. i remembered the look on some parents' faces πŸ˜‰

Friday masses are exempted for non-catholics but 'Big' masses like Maundy Thursday, exam mass, teacher's day mass - everyone has to be present. They might also be introducing Grace before meals and what-nots....

I personally think boys schools are fun, for the boys... the bonding, brotherhood, the boys' stuffs, you know... πŸ˜‰

cttuy, so your kids are in there? or you're still thinking about it?

Im guessing it’s exam time and parents might be busy stressing themselves out? πŸ˜› but try to drop them a notification? Let me scroll down that list and see who I know from there and get them to check for new members yeah…

I agree I haven't heard anything bad about Montfort Junior. Not so sure about what I heard from friends who have children in the secondary school

Hahah! I agree! Just try to ensure somehow they won't land in the sec sch πŸ˜‰ I told myself I rather choose St Pats ... Crossing my fingers that day won't come!

dear edgrace, thank you. I am currently checking out the information on montfort and I do like what I read from the school website so far. However, I was worried and wondering why there seems to be a decline in registration from 2006 to 2013. It is certainly good to hear that you have had a good experience with the primary school. May I ask how long have your child/children been to this school. Thanks again.

This is my second year with them, as to why registration is falling, I really can't answer for that πŸ™‚ I guess the bad reputation stays and over time, it shows... I'm just speaking from personal experience, and I don't have negative experiences with them. It could also be that parents are more inclined to academically strong schools and there are more of that in Hougang. As for me, academics is something I want to take charge of and not leave it to the school. What's more important is the environment, and character building the school provides. This school has a rich and vibrant arts scene and the effort they make to infuse fun into school life πŸ™‚

Feel free to inquire, I'll do my best to answer them πŸ™‚

      Anyone here??

      Hi jsdarkangel,

First of all, welcome to the Montfort family. I have two boys in there and I must admit I don't regret at all transferring them from a so-called better school. The principal is caring, teachers are among the most hardworking ones I've known and yes, parental involvement is always encouraged. On the first day, all parents will be briefed and invited to join the MJPC(montfort junior parents connection), and it IS a VERY active group ! Involvement includes sports day, racial harmony day , and almost every other thing. There's also a Father's Wing where dads play sports, camp and go outings with the boys.

Meanwhile you can check out the MJPC facebook page to have a rough idea... In addition if you are a Catholic, you are welcomed to join the boys for mass every first Friday.

Volunteer work for volunteers include helping with the reading programme, tending to the Lego room among others.

Don't worry, there's plenty to be involved about! All those negative rumors about the school started from one or two incidents at the secondary school and it affected the junior's reputation severely. As for academics, like all other schools, it really depends on how hard the children wants to work and how much support they receive at home. There are quite a number of boys who ended up in reputable secondary schools which surprises me too πŸ˜‰ at the end of the day, they tightened discipline In the school and I must stress, the teachers there are just SO wonderful. The standard may not be so high as compared to other schools but this is in line with the school's vision to balance study and play. Of course, no one's stopping anyone if you want to push your child that little bit further πŸ™‚

Good luck! And once again, a big welcome to all new parents!

Yes, I transferred out after a few years too due to logistic reasons, and oh boy... What a STARK difference πŸ˜‰ but yes, it's easier to shine in neighborhood schools and parents appreciate you better too.

But I doubt there's anything they will do to ensure fair distribution of teachers around, no?

      jetsetter:
This is 1 issue that i'm keen to probe. 2 educators in this thread had earlier said teacher posting was random, but based on what I've observed (friends and relatives who are in the profession), it is largely dependent on the grad's credentials, and to some degree, reasonable proximity to his/her home address. ...

Ok yes, jetsetter. You saw through it all πŸ™‚ I was one of those who said that teacher posting was random.

Random-was for most of the teachers.
Not sure how it works now, but ten years ago, based on our performance at NiE, my friend and I who were the top two were transferred to RGSS to do our teaching practicum. And from there it's up to the school to keep us or not. In a way that is like opening a door for the better teachers to be kept in better schools. As for the rest, posting IS random. The top NIE performers were given better opportunities that's all.

Same goes to primary schools. Having said that, I have friends who are great teachers but they prefer neighborhood schools as the pressure is definitely lesser compared to facing GEP students everyday.. So these are usually the ones who end up as HODs or teach graduating classes πŸ™‚
