    • RE: Crescent Girls' School

Hi all, been reading all your comments and I would like to share some of my experiences as well. I have a daughter currently in CGS, and she’s sec 4 this year.

First of all, I think the school provides lots of opportunities for their students and they have a wide range of activities to make learning more fun, including the slate PCs. However, according to my daughter, she finds it more of a distraction than helping her in her studies. In lower sec, where the work load aren’t as tough as in upper sec, many students tend to not listen in class and go surf the web (Facebook, gaming websites etc.). The disc containing the textbooks for lower sec is just lying around my house unused.

In upper sec, my daughter hardly brings her comp to school! She say the school requires her to submit the worksheets in hardcopy, which makes me question the purpose of the PC she got in sec 1! She is also printing a lot of her homework and powerpoint slides, saying that it is much easier and less distracting. But I guess it’s each to their own. I fully support her though, it improves her eyesight though the cost of ink and paper is another story…

However, the activities the school organizes for the students are very enriching and is of a very wide range. My daughter claims to be more interested in studying after some of the enrichment the school provides after the major exams.

CCA wise, well, I think if you’re daughters are in Uniform Groups or Performing groups, it would be very tough on them. They train for super long hours and are often very exhausted after CCA. My daughter’s in Clubs and Societies and despite what the school says, I think her CCA is as demanding as the uniform groups or performing groups! She has numerous competitions during the school period and she spends weeks on a single competition! Heard from her that the school actually took away some of their competition prizes as well…

I suppose the general environment is a rather conducive one. Most of the teachers are friendly and approachable, though my daughter says that it can get quite stressful in upper sec. Said that the scholars stresses them and the school demands a lot from them, and they actually have a quota grade the class have to get as a whole class from the school! I don’t know how that works but I suppose it is more of a form to encourage the class to work harder…

My daughter sometimes tell me about how unhappy she is in CGS due to the highly competitive environment but I do hope its just the stress talking! The school have been producing top students year after year and I fully trust the teaching methods of the teachers. I would prefer if the school teaches the girls how to properly manage stress though.
