Hi, IJ TP is a great school! We chose this school due to its proximity to home and I had wanted dd2 to do O lvls.

My dd2 is not an affiliate so she was a little apprehensive about making friends and fitting in. But the affiliates are such a friendly and genuine bunch! Before entering IJ sec, we heard so many negative comments from all the neighbouring schools and even from their own pri school affiliates in TP. When we got in, we realised it was all just a load of crap! I think the pri sch side in TP has alot of misunderstanding about the sec sch side lol!
Dd2 is in 1/1, her classmates hv t-scores 247 and above. They come from all the different IJ affiliates (not only TP) and other different pri sch. Her teachers are very nice and they do help the girls in adjusting to sec sch life.
As for someone’s complaints about teachers here not teaching well, this is not unique to IJ : ) My older two are in IP, they will tell you their teachers ‘do not teach at all’
So far, I am seeing a very structured and organised curriculum coming from IJ. In fact, their Maths curriculum is pretty challenging. My dd2’s English has improved alot due to this school’s strength in English and emphasis on Literature. I like the fact that they hv much opportunity for the girls to hone their public speaking skills, which is so important in the O levels and JC’s PW now.
Looking at their intake and their eventual O level results, you can see the school has done a wonderful job.

Thia is great sharing! From you message I gathered one important info, the fact that several students went into CHIJ TP Sec School from non affiliated schools, means that there are indeed sufficient quota allocated for this? Because I am at first worried that if all the express places are taken up by affiliated students who qualify from T-scores of 200 and above, then the limited 5 express classes will be filled by affiliated students alone and nothing left for non affiliates. I wonder if there is a strict quota reserved for both categories and if MOE cares to manage this quota?

Hello! I am a student from CHIJ and i would like to tell you not to worry 🙂 This school was not my first 3 choices but i still gained admission in it. I have a friend who put this as her last choice and got in, so that shouldn't be a big concern :)
Thanks so much!

Ermm....so is it likely to mean that COPs may not differ much from last year?

If based on what we share here bring correct and the top 10% cut-off mark I'd some as last year's @ 252, then it does seem so. Saying else have other opinions to share?

definitely there will be vacancies for girls from non affiliated schools. there will be girls who opt for IP in other schools. as long as they meet the COP, they will have a chance to enter.

for NA, there are also girls from other schools.

IJ schools are known for their strong foundation in English like other angmoh pai schools.
Thanks janet88, my only concern is that I did a mental calculation and found that there were around 250 P6 girls but only 200 express classes in Sec 1, so subtracting the top 10% who did well and went to other 'better' schools, and say another 10% that are in the Normal steam, it seems there is very little left for non affiliates (and in my case affiliates who didn't put it as 1st Choice). Is my assumption correct or am I overly paranoid about not being able to get in to CHIJ at 2nd choice even with T-scores well above the school's cut-off mark?

My DS scored 252 and is offered 3rd language option. May I know how does this give a gauge of whether top 10% has shifted this year with reference to mommyNg’s query?

While I am happy with his results, I was surprised that he is amongst the school “top performers”. And it is a fairly good school (one of those that exam papers tend to get circulated). So am also wondering if the bell curve has shifted and if there could be chances of the COPs reducing this year.
I know at 251 the 3rd language offered were only Arabic and Indonesian (without the Spanish and Japanese etc), whereas at 254 it was offered the 'full suite', so there are 2 tiers of 3rd language cut off marks. Maybe that is another indicator of what the average scores were for this year. Can more parents share?

Any idea whether cop will generally reduce or increase this yr?very few have reported t score this year

Yes I hope more parents here can share what is the general sentiment. For me I'm getting mixed signals, in my daughter's school the results seemed very good, but my other friends tell me many of the pupils they know who were expected to do well ended up far from expectations. I wonder if the bell curve is adjusted this year, with very high top students (265+), and more below <249, with less in the 250-265 range? Please continue to share, we still have a few days to decide. Thanks.

Thanks janet88 and phtthp for your advice. Yes I think I will go down to the school on Monday, hopefully I can get some constructive information then. This system is really not so great, why do all parents have to 'play poker' every year and guess?!?! It should be much simpler and less stressful for all, whether one did well, not so well, or mediocre 😓

2017 Sec 1 have five Express classes

Thanks, that means there are about 200 places at most. So if all the CHIJ TP Primary cohort this year scores above 200 and chooses to place CHIJ TP Secondary as 1st choice, that will mean I will not get a place if I put it as 2nd-6th choice even though my score is higher than the cut-off mark? Then again, if that was the case, the fact that there was a cut-off mark of 243 in 2016 means there were still vacancies for non-affiliated students? Confused..................

• RE: CHIJ Toa Payoh Secondary

Hi sorry if this has been asked before (I'm new to this forum), may I know how many express classes are the in Sec 1 intake for CHIJ TP Secondary (i.e. how many students total intake and will it likely be all taken by affiliated 1st choice?). If I am from CHIJ TP Primary and I have a PSLE score of 250 but did not put this school as 1st choice, will it mean I will have no chance of getting in based on merits (my score of 250) if I place it from 2nd-6th choice? I'm not sure if I should take a chance and would appreciate any kind advice (why can't CHIJ have IP arghhhhh!) Many thanks in advance! 😄
