I am going to bow out from this conversation gracefully as it seems that some people are determined not to see opposing views and just want to stir things up.

When I say that I don't think we have the right to ban a maid from having a hp, that is my opinion. I am not telling you that you what to do, just what I think we should do as employers. We can all draw our own conclusions and make our own decisions.

People come onto discussion boards and forums like this to hear other peoples' view and to get suggestions from them. I am not telling anyone what to do - just what I would do.

You'll notice that there are many newly created accounts who are only active in the Domestic threads and they are speak the same way - imposing their opinions right into other people's face and if you don't agree with them, well, they turn hostile as you've experienced.

Seems that some people believe that there's only and then, only one solution to every problem. Steering away from them is certainly a wise thing to do. 😂

      Agree.

The arrogant ones would like to impose their values on others

You are not listening. Go and read your own posts and see how arrogant you are. Learn to think clearly before you post the next time and don't blame others for your unclear thinking.

It is all right to have a different opinion but don't throw your beliefs on others.

Maid who endanger the lives of those under their care should be terminated immediately, unless the employer was kept in the dark about her misdeeds.

      Agree with you.

And we have a poster here insisting that employers do not have a right to prevent maids from using the hand phone. It is a privilege given to the maid and the maid should be responsible. But if the maid is using the handphone whilst pushing a pram with the employer's baby in it, that is totally unacceptable. The maid was hired to push the pram not to use the handphone. And she was irresponsible.

And we have this employer preaching that employers does not have the right to prevent the maid from having a hand phone. She does not even care about the employer whose kid was in danger. She is more in sympathy with maids and openly admit that she is pro maid instead of putting herself in the shoes of the employer who did not even know her kid narrowly escape death.

We are here as employers trying to help one another to solve problems created by maids' usage of handphones.

I think people are taking my comment the wrong way. What I am trying to say is that I don't believe we have the right to tell them to not have a hp at all. We can put restrictions on when they use it, in the same way that my boss could if she wanted but to ban them completely just in case they misuse it is not fair.

Some of them get into trouble but most of them don't. If one of your co-workers spent all day on her hp at work causing all of you to be banned from using your hp in the office, how would you feel? And if we ban them completely we are not just talking about during working hours; we are talking about 24/7. They are entitled to a life outside your household.
You are a very strange poster. You blame everyone except yourself for your post. When you cannot express yourself clearly you blame others. Suggest that you think clearly before you post if you do not want others to take your comments the wrong way.

One of the problem I see with your post is that you are unable to respond clearly on what is being discussed and bring in totally inappropriate analogies and confused the issue.

We are talking about problems with maids having handphones and you go and talk about office colleagues! Stick on with maid issues!

You also seems to be arrogant. Who are you to tell employers that they do not have the right to hire a maid without a handphone. Even the Minister does not do that and you are bigger than the Minister?

Just because it your belief you can do it with your own hire. Nobody cares. But you want to impose your belief on others? Other employers may have very valid reasons why they do not want to have a maid without a handphone and you do not respect their beliefs? You only care and talk about your beliefs

      Unbelievable

      Hard Truth:
I think to say that 99.9% slack off when they have a hp is a gross exaggeration - I have had 4 maids all of whom have had a hp and it hasn't had a negative impact at all.

Would you like to share with us what you did with your maids that the possession of handphones did not have a negative impact at all? I think I understand what verykiasu2010 meant when he said 99.9% but you will have to ask verykiasu2010 if you are not comfortable with the figure

We have to face the reality that they will all have one nowadays and we have to find ways to deal with it.

I am not sure I understand what you mean when you say that \"We have to face the reality that they will all have one nowadays\". Why is this so?

My first maid was banned from having a hp when she joined us at my husband's request. I didn't agree but ceded to it anyway. After a while she bought herself one and my m-i-l found out, told me but we both turned a blind eye. Eventually my m-i-l told her that she knew as she would fetch my daughter from childcare so it made sense for her to carry a hp then.

She used to send the occasional sms during the afternoon when my daughter was sleeping and she was in her room ironing or whatever and she made calls at night but not that often.

We didn't impose any ban on the rest of our maids and they all had a hp when they came to us. They were told very clearly that they were not to use the phone while they were working apart from maybe an sms or something in the afternoon when they take a break. They have all stuck to it. My previous one used to chat for ages every evening but she always finished her work first and never stayed up too late talking. They have all used their common sense and put their work first.

I would much prefer that they have a hp and can contact their friends and family. It also means I can contact them when they are out.

Why do we have to face the reality that they will all have one? Exactly for the reasons above. They come here to work, not as slaves. We do not have the right to prevent them from communicating with the outside world. How would you like it if your boss said that you couldn't carry a hp and were not allowed to make any phone calls whatsoever (in or out) when you were at work, not even during your lunch breaks? Yes, some of them get into trouble when they have a hp and take days off but we can't treat them all like slaves because of a few black sheep.
I can see that you are already in discussion with another poster on this topic of maid phone usage. It is good that you have share with us your personal experience with your own maids.

But I find your last paragraph disturbing. You are quite firm that employers don't have the right to stop the maid from using the handphone. There are may posts here which shows that maids are irresponsible with the phone use. In one case the maid could have had the employer's child killed if not for the presence of another employer. And yet you say that the employer does not have the right? You also indicate that some of them get into trouble when they have a handphone. From what I have been reading most of them do get into trouble with their employers. Is there some typo in your last paragraph?

Our wonderful MOM has now put more onus on employers, You better be around when your maids clean your windows.

Up the penalty on employers …that their way of solving problems

What happened to the $75 that we pay for SIP? Another useless money sucking initiative to "help" both maids and employers?

Looks to me that the only people who benefit are those that are engaged to conduct the courses? Do employers get refunds if the program is hopeless?

Maid spiked boss' coffee with her menstrual blood

An Indonesian maid was charged with mischief in court on Tuesday for adding her menstrual blood to her employer's coffee.

The 24-year-old pleaded guilty through an Indonesian interpreter.

The petite woman, who goes by the single name Jumiah, is said to have served the spiked coffee at the man's HDB home at about 6am on Aug 31 last year.

At the time, she had worked for the 38-year-old man for about a year.

Indonesian maid jailed 12 months for stealing $12,600

An Indonesian maid was jailed a total of 12 months on Wednesday for stealing her employer's ATM card and making unauthorised withdrawals.

Ratna Muhammad, 34, stole a total of $12,600 from her employer, Madam Mah Puay Hoon, 86, on 72 occasions between Oct 3, 2011 and March 22 this year.

She admitted to five counts of theft of the ATM card from Madam Mah at her Namly Avenue home, and another five counts of stealing between $400 and $1,000 from ATMs in Holland Village and National University Hospital, Kent Ridge. The total amount in the proceeded charges is $2,800.

A district court heard that she would steal Madam Mah's ATM card from her wallet, withdraw money from the ATM and remit it to her family in Indonesia.

Thank you for highlighting these fantastic maids.

Was it because of such fantastic maids that in the April issue of INFORM, under the heading of \"You Make a Great Difference\", Tan Chuan Jin says this
      to the maids

\" You are nannies to our children, you are caregivers to our elderly and disabled. And without you (maids)looking after children, elderly, employers will not be able to built their careers\"

Meaning? Working mummies, you have to kow tow to your maids and thank them for giving you the opportunities to advance in your careers. You are supposed to shower praises upon your maids and don't complain about them. Without your maids you are nothing.

Wow! Wonder how our mummies are going to swallow this?

MOM says those things to wayang for the ILO to see, else singapore continues to be blacklisted by ILO

that is why MOM = Ministry of Maids
Really unfortunate. Taxpayers pay a lot to maintain the staff at Ministry of Maids (The top honcho is not cheap). And yet all we get is wayang instead of really looking at the plight of the mummies who would love to stay at home and bond with their kids but need to go out to make ends meet.

Instead of heaping praises on mummies, the Ministry add salt by belittling them.

Perhaps MOM has not tasted the wrath of the Mummies! (either type is fine)

Ahhh, he says that without maids the employers will not be able to build their careers. Then why do they keep insisting that the levy is to discourage people from employing maids?

He speaks with a forked tongue?? Any other explanation?

    • Laws by Indo authorities on cleaning in high rise homes.....

      ‘Reconsider restrictions on maid duties’

      by Monica Kotwani
      04:45 AM May 07, 2012 (TODAY)

The Association of Employment Agencies in Singapore (AEAS) has spoken out against the new laws imposed by the Indonesian authorities preventing its domestic workers from cleaning the exterior of windows and hanging laundry in high-rise homes.

The AEAS said yesterday that the source countries should focus on training instead of imposing rules against doing certain household chores.

The Indonesian Embassy announced last week that all new Indonesian maids and employers will have to sign a contract which includes a clause barring maids from carrying out these chores. The new rule came into effect this month. The ban comes after eight Indonesian foreign domestic workers (FDW) fell to their deaths in the last five months. The AEAS said that instead of imposing such clauses in contracts, the focus of the Indonesian authorities should be on safety training at the source country.

AEAS president K Jeyaprema said that such training could entail using some of the 400 hours of mandatory training at source training centres to focus on getting the domestic workers used to their living and working environments.

"A lot of it has to do with the foreign domestic worker and how conscious she is of her own safety," said Ms Jeyaprema, who added that the AEAS will provide input to the Indonesian authorities on improving the training programmes.

She said: "We have to focus on educating the foreign domestic worker. I think Singaporean employers are responsible people - I don’t see them risking a foreign domestic worker’s life over a chore like cleaning windows or hanging clothes." Monica Kotwani
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting that speaking on behalf of employers came from AEAS and not from our MOM who are supposed to look after the employers welfare.
