Hi everyone, may I get some feedback on HCL’s chinese lessons for Sec 1 HCL? I heard it is less intensive than Wang, but do they teach good strategies for exam? My DC is a potato, oral average, can score very well for paper 2, but not so for paper 1… quite unbalanced. So Im looking for a chinese school with dedicated teachers who can give him some attention in the writing part, and perhaps help him to cultivate more interest in the language.

Hi, yes it is accepted. My DS happened to write the exact same plot, but the only difference is his story ended with protagonist finding back his integrity as he decided to do the right thing to return it.
For the compo, how about a story like this...the protagonist picks up and keeps something that doesn’t belong to him, and the moral of the story is that although he has benefitted from the material gains, what he lost is his integrity. -

My son says the question was pick 3 word line x to line 39 that means regret? And he answered twinge of regret.
DS says the qn is to pick a 3 word line that means 'twinge of regret'. He put 'all too soon'. -

I see. I must have heard wrongly from DS.
It’s from vocab not vocab clozefaithj\" post_id=\"1996891\" time=\"1601546210\" user_id=\"171285:
I thought this qn is from vocab close? There should be a word in the blank to replace.

May I know what is the original word to be substituted? DS also chose discarded, but he couldnt remember why, and I had to end the call. He said something like you cant abandon food, and synonym for discard can also be like cast aside.
Abandoned... DS chose discarded but based on the sentence he recalled, i believed it should be abandoned -
RE: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
Dear curioustudent, Wonderment, lucid & macflashpay,
Thank you for your invaluable sharing. It certainly is a lot of information to digest. I’m assuming the teachers will explain them all to the students as they progress, and that parents may not need to know everything, am I right? I’m only familiar with the A levels.
For the olympiads, do all students get a chance to participate or do they select based on performance/grades? -
RE: NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)
Dear parents and students in NUSH, I have a few questions to ask as DS got a CO for nush. Hope to clarify some doubts as DS enjoys both Math and English very much and doesnt know what school to choose.
1) What’s the difference between ‘Special Programmes’ and ‘Subject Interest Groups’, there seems to be some overlap in the things they do. (Eg. Socrates Programme and the English Interest Group) And would you say this is similar to the ‘English Special Programme’ in Upper Primary?
2) Do the SPs and SIGs both fall under Enrichment Modules?
3) Do students need to be selected to join these SPs and SIGs? How many can they join? How many hours do they spend here?
4) How does NUSH’s English curriculum differ from the ‘A’ level’s GP/KI?
5) Does NUSH have any school team sports CCAs?
6) Where can I view the results for the past year’s NUSH graduates?
7) What is a rough % of students who move on to good overseas unis? (esp. US Uni)
Thank you! -

@CMMom, thank you for your reply. My son hasn't started Math nor Science Olympiad. I sometimes think if it is too much for him to study for Olympiad on top of school work but I guess it is necessary if we aim for top schools.
Hi Ichigo15, I dont think external Math/Science Olympiad training is necessary. But perhaps if your child is really passionate about math and science, he should have read many related magazines/watched many science educational program/ask and research on things that make him curious. He can try to join E2k Math and E2kScience in school as they do provide some exposure. There are also many private math Olympiads which you can sign him up for. What's most impt is a curious mind and the passion to learn, of course coupled with good grades in school math and science especially.
In case can help, we included all math and science olympiads, external programming course (if any, frankly my child only attended one workshop), innovation or research program slides/poster, ... that’s for the application submission. Even if your child do some projects at home, I think good to showcase because it shows the passion part.CMMom\" post_id=\"1993362\" time=\"1598922030\" user_id=\"155527:
Since there are parents from NUSH here, would you mind to advise how parents can prepare kids apply for NUSH DSA?
I joined e-open house and understand that portfolio is important. They mentioned that not all kids are Olympiad but need to be both academically strong and have passion for math and science. What did you included in your kids portfolio?
In the interview, I saw that the questions are really testing the child interest and thinking process for both math and science. Those that you’ll only be able to answer if you are exposed to a lot of variety and depth of topics. (We parents are home also need a hint to solve the math 😂).
All the best! -

Also got HCI CO for academic domain. DS likes NUSH....
Can share why does he prefer NUSH? And what are your thoughts on these 2 schools?
