Hi, if P5 year end result is just above 70%, can consider trying for DSA via sports next year?
Appreciate some thoughts from experienced parents.
Thank you. -

The very “top” schools do take in Sports DSA students scoring in the 70s range - there is no harm trying.

Thank you Mrs Kiasu and doodbug for your kind response.
I wonder how the overall Conduct of the child can affect the outcome ? Any idea on that ? -

I would think the main selection criterion is your child’s achievements in that particular sport. He should be one of the top national players to have a good chance.

Have a look at the list of secondary schools that take in DSA via your child’s particular sport. If there are several, then pick the one(s) that are not more than 10 points above your child’s predicted T score. I would think that’s the most sensible way to narrow down your applications.
Conduct: of course good conduct is preferable. If for some reason he has “bad” conduct indicated in his report book, prep him to explain why during the interview/trial. -
The requirements for each sport is different. Most sports (and schools) do not require a child to be in national team. There are applicants who went for trials at IP schools with zero medals and received DSA offers. Some sports are much mire competitive and are at a higher competitive standard than others.
-
Different school different requirements. Go to your interested school website to find out their individual min requirements.
Eg nan hua high school, need to have conduct at least a “good” and 3 subjects 70% or 75% (forgotten) and above.
Eg river valley high school need to have an “A” in mother tongue.
No need to be in school team. They test ur skills on the spot. If u r strong in that sport, u will pass the sport trial. Then follow by interview to see how u present yourself.
Just make full use and apply it. School will shortlist, so no harm to apply. If u fit the bill, u will get shortlisted for trial/interview. If u pass and obtain a confirm offer, u can then decide if u wan to accept the offer. -

The only IP school I know that conducts sports trials for general sporting talent is NJC. Can u name some others?

It should be more accurately said that the requirement for each sport and each school is different. The more popular the school and the best school in that particular sport will generally have much more demanding requirements than the rest.doodbug\" post_id=\"1945557\" time=\"1573311167\" user_id=\"13281:The only IP school I know that conducts sports trials for general sporting talent is NJC. By the way, “they test your skill on the spot” is a fallacy. For popular schools / competitive sports, the panel generally already has an idea of who’s who and who / what is required. -
I am not sure about general sports trials (i never mentioned this term) but most kids in sports may or may not be in school teams, but definitely those in national teams are in the very very small minority.

To add, not all sports have “National” age-group teams. For popular sports, definitely, but not the less popular ones. In general, one should be in the school team or a club to start a reasonable chance in one of the popular schools.

Erm, I did not say national team. I said top national player. At least must have some experience and shown to be top few in a nation-wide competition, that is what I meant.
I am more likely to agree with floppy. Which is, in specific sports, especially individual sports, all the kids and coaches already know who’s the best in the nation. The trial or interview is sometimes just a formality. -

Hwa Chong Institution, Dunman High to name a few for sports DSA...None of those schools have “General sporting talent”. You will have to pick a sport to apply in -

My DS1 was a player for national youth team of a sports . DS2 trains in national youth team but not selected in starter 17. Both DS1 and DS2 are in school team for the sports. The national team plays in international competitions. Playing in “nation-wide” aka local competitions such as National Primary School *Sports* Competition does not put the player as a national player. 😅

Maybe team sports are different.

Some “national” team doesn’t play in overseas tournaments - because there isn’t any appropriate ones and because budget is an issue.

Technically, to be called a “national” player, you have to be a carded athlete. If you are not carded, you are just a trainee (or simply, a very good player). Notwithstanding, specifics matter very little in DSA selection. Most good (and desired by popular schools) sportsmen are known entities - such is the small size of the sports fraternity.
BTW, which sport has 17 players as starters?
