An ex-teacher has this to say:

In hindsight, Pioneer JC (1999), Meridian JC (2003) and Innova JC (2005) should probably not have been built.

Especially so when secondary schools were subsequently allowed to start JC sections under the Integrated Programme (IP): Dunman High (2005), River Valley High (2006), ACS Independent (2008) and SJI Independent (2013).

In addition, specialised independent schools were set up that have JC sections as well: NUS High School of Math and Science (2005), SOTA (2008).

Plus you have a spanking new Eunoia JC set up in 2017 to primarily take in IP students from Catholic High School, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School and CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School.

So actually since the turn of the century, we had 10 schools entering the JC market to compete for pre-university students:

3 new JCs,
1 new JC set up for IP students,
4 secondary schools with newly started JC sections (IP), and…
2 new secondary schools with JC sections (IP).

So while the newspapers are talking all about population decline, that is only one part of the reason for the closures of 4 JCs. One can see population decline coming a mile away.

The seemingly reckless expansion of JCs and the Integrated Programme in secondary schools from 1999 to 2017, in spite of clear demographic change, is the reason why MOE is now closing down 4 JCs.

Of course, an error of this magnitude is quite uncharacteristic of Singapore’s MOE.

So what might actaually have happened? I suggest that what we had was a brutal competition set up between the traditional JC system and the Integrated Programme system.

In the race between JCs and the Integrated Programme (IP), it’s pretty clear that MOE and the consumers - parents and students - have decided that the IP has won.

The school is proud of the 2016 Year 6 cohort for their hard work and achievements at the 2016 GCE A-Level Examinations.

A total of 389 Dunmanians sat for the Examinations in 2016, and they have done themselves and the school proud with their hard work and achievements!

Almost 50% (187 Dunmanians) scored at least 3 H2 Distinctions, with 136 attaining at least 6 Distinctions, 60 scoring at least 7 Distinctions and 9 achieving 8 Distinctions.

The percentage distinctions achieved for 26 out of the 32 H1 and H2 subjects are above national averages. In addition, 49% of our H3 students scored a Distinction for their H3 subjects.

With our Dunmanians’ excellent academic performance and achievements in the CCAs, they have proven to be able to care, to serve and to lead, and ready to contribute to society and Singapore in their capacities as Leaders of Honour.

DHS has just updated her 2017 A Level results on the school website. Its simply spectacular ! Do you think DHS has probably overtaken VJC to be in 3rd place this year ? If yes, do you think NYJC's results is probably on par with VJC's too ? :evil:

RVHS Integrated Programme Graduates Continue to Achieve Good Results



1. River Valley High School's seventh batch of 396 Integrated Programme graduates have, like their seniors, done exceedingly well in the GCE A-Level Examination.

A total of 744 students sat for the Examinations last year.

1 in 2 students scored at least 3 H2 distinctions, with 165 scoring at least 6 distinctions and 59 students scoring at least 7 distinctions.

All H1 and H2 content subjects, as well as all H3 subjects, had a 100% pass rate, with 10 H2 and 15 H1 subjects above national average for % distinctions.

This cohort tirelessly and selflessly contributed back to the community, serving an average of 106 hours in community service;
They have continued Hwa Chong's tradition of excellence with 49 World Championship Titles (2006-2017);
They also took home 55 Top 3 titles at the Interschool Sports Championships in 2016 and;
14 Certificates of Distinction for Performing Arts at the 2015 Singapore Youth Festival.



To date, 11 Hwa Chong students have been awarded provisional Public Service Commission Scholarships. Loh Jia Yi has also been conferred the provisional Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Scholarship. She is the second female student from Hwa Chong to be conferred this scholarship.

Even before the release of the GCE A-Level results, 12 students have been admitted to Peking and Tsinghua Universities for bicultural excellence. Three students have also received conditional offers from Fudan University.

This year, a record number of 52 Hwa Chong students have received offers to Cambridge and Oxford University. Over 600 offers have also been made to Hwa Chong students from top US and UK universities such as Harvard, Brown, NYU, Imperial, LSE, and Columbia.
