Dunno how to quote some people so here are my replies

sweetbaby, thanks. I wasn’t expecting any response cos I tot still need to go for interview.
wkrf, my son applied under ALP Robotics. He went for a selection trial during the last wk of Jul, received a first email 2 days later, to say that the tchrs n mgmt are pleased with his results fr the trial and he’s through. My first tot was ok interview next. The next email arrived during end Jul saying he has been selected and a CO will be given to him by 31 Aug. I asked if need interview, the tchr in charge said no need as he has chatted briefly with my son and the ALP Head who was present, concurred with his (the teacher IC) decision.

Hence a gf n colleagues questioned if this is legit. Even I was in doubt but I didn’t email the tchr IC further. Wait for CO by 31 Aug like what he said.

      Well done!

The key thing is the teacher has interacted w the kid. 😄

      Thanks

First time reading this thread. Didn’t plough thru the last 249 pages.

Can I please ask if anyone’s child here has received a CO, after going for selection trial, without going for interview? Is it true that some schools have already informed the selected students of their COs? Does this mean if u didn’t receive any email, u hv to wait until 31/8 to know if it’s a WL or rejected?

Err... how about instead of soccer jersey the child wrote soccer shirt, will penalise?

Frankly speaking, I think may or may not, bc the contents & language play a big part on the whole compo's mark. The 'shirt' & 'jersey' is just a word used, which sound better. I reckon the PSLE marker will read the whole compo as a whole. Even if the child able to use 'jersey' but the whole compo had lots of grammar & spelling mistakes, I bet this child will score lower than another child who was able to write beautifullly but only did not write the word 'jersey'.

Another impt thing to note is Compo is a very subjective one. Anyway they will be 2 markers to read the child's compo. So we wouldn't know for sure if it will penalize more or less. At the end of the day, it still depends the 2 markers want to give more or less mark.

      So.....don't dwell too much.....

Adding on...be it jersey or tee shirt, my guess is the emphasis probably on how/why the gift is special. If not, the title would have been A Gift

My son wrote abt boys sharing a secret last yr and the pic was 2 girls chatting. He asked his Eng tchr and the tchr said he won't be penalised for it.

Was that last year's PSLE topic?

I think it was A Secret

Maybe fatmama75 is a PSLE compo marker (or knows someone who is one)!

    • RE: Q&A - PSLE English
Hello!

How was the English today? DD said paper 2 was harder than 2016 PSLE English paper 2. Composition sounded pretty all right. She wrote about a farewell party and her friends giving main character a special gift as memorabilia. Some of her friends wrote interesting plots like giving special gifts to elderly(community service), Teachers' Day Celebration, giving friend a mug signed by favourite actor for her birthday, etc.
For paper 2, my DD said there was this one question in sentence synthesis about washing the clothes which she knows she did it wrongly. Anybody knows what the actual sentence is? DD said her friend(top in English in Prelim) put : Not having washed the dishes before, Arun messed it up. (Might be slightly different, DD doesn't exactly remember what she wrote). She wrote completely differently because she misread the question :slapshead: \"Not once had Arun washed the dishes and messed it up.\"(meaning he had never messed up washing the dishes).

Cassie said that the paper was quite difficult. The compo was a walk in the park for her, though. She wrote about the main character's best friend bringing her on a treasure hunt, with a big party at the end and the character's best friend gave her a mug with her favourite singer's signature on it.

For paper 2, about that question. Cassie was whining about it when she got home. If I am not wrong, the sentence should something like:

Arun did not know how to wash the dishes. Arun mess it up.

Now that I think about it, I don't think that was correct. | Oops. Cassie wrote:

Not only did Arun did not know how to wash the dishes, he also made a mess of it.

All in all, the paper was quite difficult this year.

Can someone enlighten me pls? Am a bit confused on the compo requirements. From the above sharings, seems that quite a number of students wrote more about the situation surrounding the special gift, rather than the gift itself. Eg. If the compo talks more about the party or celebration, and a bit about the gift, is that out of point since the topic is \"A Special Gift\"
Hi
Any idea what the guiding questions are? If the topic is A Special Gift, what markers look for is how and why is the gift special. What meaning does it hold for the person receiving the gift? If the bulk of the compo is on the celebration, the process of getting the gift, planning for the party/celebration, the child loses marks on the content part.

    • RE: Travel : United States

      MMM:
Interesting to chance upon this thread again as it reminded me of the US trip that we did in Dec 2014. From time to time, will look back at our photos in FB and think about what we did.

We used Alamo for car rental. Given that we've 5 person, we rented dodge caravan. Upon arrival, they convinced us into getting a fairly new Jeep Cherokee which came with free GPS in our case. As we were there for 2 weeks and safety is of utmost concern, went with the recommendation. We got those insurance where required as to me, peace of mind during travel is more important. No one wants to get involved in an accident. While we are careful, we cannot guarantee that the other road users will too. Car was superb and fuel consumption was really low. We only pump a few time despite that we drove from LA (Anaheim) - San Diego - Las Vegas (did Grand Canyon via a full day tour) - SFO - 17 miles drive - Santa monica - LA (Hollywood). The only issue we had was storage space.... It was our biggest concern all the time... In the end, we had to curb our shopping because there wasn't enough space in the car.

In LA, we spent initial 3 nights at Anaheim to cover Disneyland. During our trip, we stayed with those Hampton inn & suites (given that we have family of 5 and we wanted everyone in 1 room) and they have decent hot breakfast and decent size rooms. The girls look forward to making their own waffle every morning. For Hollywood, we stayed at Days Inn Hollywood Near Universal Studios. It was walking distance to Grauman Chinese theatre so near to food, shops, etc... Hotel is not new but still decent. Price is very reasonable as well. Breakfast is not great but there is always a choice of dining nearby. I think there was a in n out burger chain nearby.

I used tripadvisor for my hotel research and the choices came out really decent. I also used google map to plan our trip. It helped to estimate the distance and and timing. Another \"interesting\" thing we did was, we tend to take a driving break after 3 hours. We want to make a stop but unsure where to go, so we always search for macys or walmart.... So we ended up shopping all the time.
      Hi MMM

Can I pls ask how many days was your trip? You flew via which airline?
