Hi, my daughter was like that too; very quiet, didn't want to reply to other people except her parents. I read scores of books, and figured out that she probably has selective mutism. Check out the book \"Helping your kids with selective mutism\" which is available in library. I tired the techniques mentioned in the book. She has since improved tremendously and is blossoming in a girls school.


I think it will be worthwhile to consult an educational psychologist to assess your child as early intervention is always the best.

It depends on how her marks stand against herself… Did she perform at her capability and potential? What did she learn in the process? How can she apply her learning to the next Maths CA on 18th Sept?

My DS is a transfer student whose conduct and results were excellent in his previous school. He knows CHS is a good school and has been active in trying to fit in and make friends, however he has been feeling rather upset with this very senior English teacher who seems to micromanage and picking on him a little. DS, like me, tends to make even more mistakes when being micro managed. Sigh! Can only hope he doesn't step on the teacher's toes again.

I wonder if this teacher is the same one who taught maths to my son last year... My son had a hard time and lost a lot of ground, and my discussion with the teacher during the PTM didn't go anywhere. We just had to bite the bullet... Still, nonetheless, you should discuss this with the teacher, perhaps during the CNY class party when it is less formal? If this is a class issue (rather than a student issue), you can try to get the class reps to help talk to the teacher in question?

Hi karenmok - do allow me to share my perspectives. I bake bread at home when I've time, and if not, I just buy commercial bread. I don't try to force myself to bake if I don't have time, cos it'll take away the joy of baking. I've both a breadmaker and a good Kenwood mixer, and I'm able to use the appropriate machine for the recipes. For easy straightforward recipes, the breadmaker is very convenient. For more complex recipes that require multiple kneading steps addition of ingredients and shaping (eg. Panettone bread and cinnamon buns), I use my Kenwood mixer.

I think it's hard to quantify how you can recover the cost of the \"investment\". You have to calculate the costs of the raw materials as well, plus some intangibles - eg. the bread you bake at home will be very fresh and free of preservatives. You can consider getting a basic breadmaker such as Kenwood BM150 or Takada (which I have) which is great for beginners. Hope this helps!
