• Relevance of Cognitive Science to language skills

Hi

Any parents out there read about the recent Cognitive Sc conference and the speech by Heng Swee Keat on its relevance and application to our current education system? Especially the part on language, reading and comprehension skills.

Its interesting to see how MOE would be looking into this area and help our school kids, especially those in primary school! It would have alot of relevance with the latest change in the English Syllabus!

• RE: All About Autism

Hi,

I'm interested in this program. I read from some website that it has started to become a 'standard therapy' in Australia.

I can't access the website you provided. Is there any email address or telephone number that I can contact them?

Thanks
Hi
website is http://www.fastforword.com.sg. Did you type \"Fast ForWord\"? I made the mistake of typing \"Fast Forward\" with an \"a\".

I managed to get a copy of their flier for the upcoming event on 22 Sep. See attached.

Hi Parents

Just to share. My son has been using this online programme for over a year now. Its from Fast ForWord. I like the convenience this programme offers, cos i can get him to do it every day or afew times a day at home. Especially helpful during school holidays!

I heard that they are running a free parent seminar sometime this month. So for those of you who are interested you may wanna check it out. Their website is http://www.fastforword.com.sg.

Hi, I am keen to enrol my girl for the program. Which series are you using (language, literacy or reading) and how much does it cost? Basically the fee covers just installation of the software on your computer? We have to buy our own headphones? Thanks!

Hi
My son is on language currently. Initial sign up is for 3 months @ $900. Thereafter its renewable at $250 per month. Yes, the fee covers installation and you get your own headphones. Hope info helps.

• RE: Kranji Sec or Swiss Cottage Sec

🦆

cafelatte:
My impression of Kranji is good. My cousin has been teaching there for years and some friend's children are there. The COP is 2nd highest in CCK area, after BPGHS....so the cohort should be quite good ?

I guess in every school there are good and not-so-good students ?

I heard Swiss Cottage is good but I don't have first hand information about it.
YES! Swiss Cottage is great! The teachers are young and energetic. They are very proactive in engaging with students and parents. I am heartened by the support they gave my son when he started there this year. First all new sec 1 students, the school focus alot on character building - eg: developing leadership skills, building confidence, analytical skills, etc. The student spend alot of time attending such enrichment programs. The school also actively engage with parents at various fronts, eg: Parents Support Group, Dads For Life activities, etc.

• Need for balance between IQ vs EQ?

In Spore’s relentless pursuit of academic excellence and the race by parents to get their children academically ready for Primary school, one wonders, if the child, who is 3,4 or 5 years old, are foundationally ready to handle the deluge of academic subjects, and in the process, being able to handle the emotions that developed, eg: managing stress, anger, developing a resilient attitude to setbacks, being able to relate to their peers when their friends may not be able to catch-up?

I just went for the PTM for my girl who is K1. Am abit rattled by teachers’ comments that she is slow in completing her work and that in a class with so many children, the teacher said that she has no time to work with her. Teacher said that if she doesn’t speed up, she will be left behind in Primary school. While that comment is a reality, but I am saddened by the fact that at age 5, she is beginning to experience the rat race!

eksmummy:
How is brainfit different from mind champs, mind edge?

I reckon the diff would be in the techniques used. Brainfit has regular free parent workshops. Maybe you can consider attending one of these sessions to find out more. They used to do it on Sats, but recently I heard they have Sunday sessions as well. Not sure. Better you call them to find out.

Like to know any difference between BrainFit Studio & BrainFit Classroom?

Hi
BrainFit Studio does only brain fitness training. BrainFit Classroom is another unit under their program which offers English enrichment and they incorporate some form of Brain Fitness training which supposed to boost the learning ability of the child.

I believe you can find more info from their respective websites.
NOT Good. A waste of $ I have tried a package. Very nice when asking u to sign up but when $ paid .....different face. Cannot book weekends must pay extra and mons also cannot. I think if you buy those books outside from United Square can do at home. Nothing really fantastic. IMHO.

Hi KohLL
Its really unfortunate that you had such an experience. My experience when I was there with my son (for another program) was a pleasant one. What I like about them is that they are not 'pushy' if you know what I mean. There are alot of centers who are like \"spas\". Very pushy. I don't like it. I like to be given time to think about it especially programs for my kids.

BTW, can you share where you can get those books you mentioned? and what are their titles? I would be really interested. A friend of mine has actually enrolled her child in their brainy program recently. She told me that they do a mix of physical & computer activities to stimulate the brain. So I really am keen to read about how the listening & memory activities on the computer or the physical activities can be replaced.

Thanks alot! 🙂

Hi GabyEn, could you let me know beside SMART Listening Program, what other program did you sign up, I send my child for a assessment, they recommend SMART, Moves, Vision, Listening and Focus. So I am really thinking very hard whether I should sign up? My child is 12+ so not too sure whether it will help him? Are they able to strenghten your child weakness?
Hi Sabby
PM you.
