I'm a little confused. Even if your DD wants to rejoin the council, doesn't she has to be voted in? And wouldn't she have to work with new people again? I don't think the rest of the council would stay back just for her.

Yes, she would most likely need to be voted back into council and work with new people.
I am hoping to talk her out of this as I personally do feel that she needs to do well this year, as I know retainees can face many struggles during their repeat year, one of which is likely to be being despised. She told me that when she went back to help council for the school's openhouse last week at the request of her teacher, she ran into her 2018 physics tutor at the library and her tutor was very rude to her. Her tutor looked at her and rolled her eyes, even showing looks of disgust before walking away. She mentioned before how this tutor looked down on students who got anything less than an A2 and she is a very arrogant person. I really hope that she can work hard and do well enough this year to prove this tutor wrong, and I really hope she can do well enough to tell people that \"I was a retainee with 6As and 1B.\"
I think she would have to stick her neck out and promises 5 passss out of 5 subjects.

She is not some freshies who’s sitting for a JC1 mid year exam facing some new topics / subjects for the first time. While 4 out of 5 is an improvement, it doesn’t sound like like a credible promise to change. If she can’t pass all the subjects on her second try with a year of knowledge under her belt, I honestly think council work is not for her.

She is promising only 4 because she is intending to switch subject combinations from PCMG to PCME instead.

Suggest you help her stay very focused. It was just last April when I read you were targeting at Medicine. Then in Oct, you were interested in transferring to Eunoia JC from this merged JC. Shortly, your dd was retained and lost her SC position. Now you want to switch to a new H2 subject Econs, which isn't a walk in the park.

Am I right to say that you're thinking this might boost her portfolio to get into Medicine? I hope you know you don't need to be from the SC to get into Medicine (check your posts in the NTU/NUS Medicine thread). Nor do you absolutely need to be a councillor to get a govt scholarship (other CCA leaderships also ok) or to get into OCS (for males). I've friends who successfully got into top universities in the UK and US without ever running for council.

I know it's very fun and novel to organise activities for peers in a merged JC that's just adopted a new identity, but ultimately, remember this is just a passing phase... Her priority now is to focus on her 3 best H2, PW and GP and earn that ticket / passport to at least one of our local AUs. Just because she's scored an A2 for O lvel HCL doesn't mean she should waste those extra free time on something that cannot earn her that uni ticket.

Remember she has a whole lifetime ahead of her to serve the community and the public. Why jeopardise these 2 crucial years of her life? Once in the local AUs, there are a myriad of faculty councils, orientation committees in various college halls, clubs and societies for her cherry-pick and serve to her heart's content. Same for overseas universities - plenty of student councils and committees to run for!

And if those are not enough to keep her occupied and socially gratified, she can always volunteer in grassroots organisations, charities, clans, religious groups, etc. during her undergrad and postgrad years. Btw, why don't you get her to spend her precious time to volunteer in some nursing homes/hospices instead, since you want her to get into NTU/NUS Medicine? Isn't that more practical and useful?

I feel that someone aiming for Medicine shouldn't be satisfied with just 4 out of 5 passes in JC1 on her 2nd attempt. She must vow to get at least 5 As & Bs in her repeat year, otherwise if she flunks again, she will have to join a poly to fulfil her Medicine dream.
Her previous plan was to not take on a CCA at all for the next 2 years as she is not interested in other CCAs, and she intends to build her portfolio for university entrance through volunteer work at Youth Corps during her holidays and then seek a job placement in the healthcare industry (e.g. polyclinic or GP clinics) during her post-A levels, as well as voluntary at other organisations. I agreed with her plan as it does seem feasible as she is keeping her school days free from any other external work, and I think with that, she can have a more balanced time of studying and relaxing now.
She recently had the thought of making an appeal to the principal regarding council as I believe it was because of her last session with the council and I think she misses them.

Her council teacher has also spoken to her regarding how she can build her portfolio without taking on a CCA, as her portfolio for 2018 is rather okay since she had council as a CCA. Her council teacher did advise her to take on volunteer work outside of school during holidays, and retainees are being given a internship opportunity during post-promos, which he recommended her to take on an internship at healthcare industry as she can include this into her portfolio too. In addition, he also mentioned that she can join Orientation 2020 as an OGL this year as long as she does well for promos, which will give her portfolio a boost as well.

I believe that she is having a hard time at the moment letting go of council as she has mentioned how council has been a big part of her jc journey so far and I just wanted to support her as much as possible.

is geography at upper sec very much tougher?

daughter insists on appealing for electing geography. I have been coaching her for history and geography for the past 2 years and it was sucking my life. if she takes geography, I dread to think if she can cope since I am planning to get her plan own revision.
Hello, my child took Full Geography during her upper secondary education and did pretty well.
Her opinion is that Full Geography and Elective Geography are rather similar in module and content as Elective only has 2 chapters less. She told me that papers are doable once you get the hang of it, as she was failing it badly as well in Sec 3 as she wasn't used to the paper ( she got F9 for her EOYs in sec 3). In Sec 4, due to constant exposure, she got the hang of it and got an A2 for her prelims and proceeded to achieve the same grade for her Os. I personally feel that your child's passion for the subject is most crucial, as it will fuel her to keep studying, just like how it did for my child.

All the best! 😄 :rahrah:

zac's mum's suggestions are good - if she really wants it, she will have to prove that she can handle the appeal for herself.

On the other hand, she should be prepared that the JC will not agree. They may feel that it sets a bad precedent, or they may fear that her diligence now may not last through the year.

Reading your post again, I'm not very clear whether she is asking to be a councillor for another year? Or just to continue another few months till her cohort steps down? Her cohort of the council will be stepping down very soon. If it's the latter, the JC may be more amenable although she will have to rely on testimonials rather than test results as those will be too late. If it's the former, is she planning to stand for election again? They may not allow her to continue without being elected as it won't be fair to the juniors, and they may not allow her to stand for election again on policy. Just some thoughts.
I have spoken to her regarding this, as I want her to be mentally prepared should her appeal be rejected.
She feels that she loves what she does in council, and she is willing to stand for elections again alongside the new batch of JC1. She has also expressed that she is also willing to accept a condition whereby she will leave council if her mid-year results are not ideal enough (she is looking at 4 passes out of 5 subjects as she only had 2 H1 passes from last year).
What do you think are the odds if she were to make an appeal?

Agree with both zac's mum and slmkhoo.

genevaong - was your daughter elected by her former jc mates before the merger?

I dunno, but if i were the Principal of this newly merged jc, I'd want to start everything on a clean slate. I'd prefer to be be fair and let the incoming batch of o level grads stand for a fresh round of election.

Since the JC1 tests (to prove she is more studious this year) aren't happening before the election iirc, she can perhaps appeal to the Principal to be given a chance to stand for election again, alongside the 2019 JC1 candidates. Bear in mind it's a totally fresh 'electorate' this year. The freshmen should be given the right to vote for whomever they deem capable of serving them in the upcoming 2 years.

Most student leaders, prefects and councillors can juggle both public service and their studies. They are role models to other students.
Hello there, yes my child was elected by her former cohort into council.

I agree with the others. The JC is doing her a favour by taking the choice out of her hands. She has shown that she needs more time to study, and being in the council is a very time- and energy-intensive CCA. My daughter was a councillor in her JC years, and I know how much it takes. You should advise your daughter to make the most of this extra time she has been given.
Hello there, I do understand the rigour of being in Council, and my child is fully aware as well, which is why she is constantly seeking opinions from me on this matter. From a mother’s perspective, I do want her to excel in her studies and also develop as a person. She has indeed grown a lot through Council. I can see her passion towards what she does in Council, and I see her drive to do well now as she has already started revision for JC1. She has promised she would do well for her blocks, and I can see her effort. This is very in contrast to what she did last year, as she was always sleeping and did not want to study.
I would like to support her decision in hoping to keep Council as a CCA, and I would like to know what are some possible pathways I can take to help her keep Council as a CCA.

Will it help if I were to contact the Principal and have my child speak to him regarding this matter?

Hello all, I would like to seek some advice from all of you.

My child entered a merged college last year and she was retained, therefore she has to repeat her JC1 this year.
She was a member of the Students' Council, and now that she is being retained, she has to leave her CCA as policy is that Students' Council cannot have any retainees. She is rather upset about this as she has sentiments towards Council and she is passionate and loves what she does there.
I would like to ask, whether there is any possibility for her to be able to appeal to the new principal and school management for her to remain in Students' Council? I know it has always been a policy for retainees to leave Council, but is there any possibilities for her to still remain in Council?

Please advise, thank you 😄
