      Hi GivingTree,

Ah, I see! So at least not all the 4 texts for novel, it is a mixture of 5 texts including novels, drama & poem. For other H2 Lit students (who are not in HP) will do only Paper and Paper 2? I chanced upon past years prelim paper for H2 Lit, some were P1 &P2, another was P1 & P3. I read the H2 Lit latest syllabus- P1 is compulsory; whereas students are to choose either P2 or P3. So is it different year will be decided by the school to take either P1 & P2 or P1&P3? My dd have no seniors to approach for the Lit advice as most of them took Econ, and only 1 senior just graduated from HP this year.
Hi apologies, I just asked my son. He said all Lit students take papers 1 and 3, just different texts for HP. Sorry my bad!

Any parents' kids take Literature as contrasting subject for this year JC1? How does the study of Drama & Prose taught throughout the JC years b4 they have their As?

For example, in the syllabus it stated that students will study one of the prose texts from the 4 books: Frankenstein, The Great Gatsby, Pride & Prejudice, An Artist of the Floating World -- Does the students need to study the 4 books or only 1 book in JC?

If require to study 4 books, how does the school sequence which book to teach first for the first year in JC; as well as 2nd year in JC by preparation for A level?
For H2 Lit, HP students do Paper 1 and Paper 3. Other Lit students do Paper 1 and Paper 2. Each paper is taught by a different Lit teacher. The papers will be taught concurrently. The students will study all texts selected by the school. I recall my son studied 5 texts - Age of Iron, Ariel, Measure for Measure, Wordworth’s Prelude and Pride and Prejudice. Hope this helps. Best if your son / daughter can ask seniors.

HCI seems to be doing well in maths and science competitions for the past 2 years, on par with RI and better than NUS high?
HCI is a comprehensive school, so there are many opportunities for the boys to participate and excel in STEM, STEAM and Humanities related conferences and competitions both in Singapore and overseas.

    • RE: HCL Education Centre - Discussion

I have been quite loyal to HCL over past 10 years. Paid thousands of dollars in fees every year for many years. My kid #1 finished Sec 4 HCL recently. #1 had been very unhappy there for several years but I asked #1 to stay on as I didn’t find suitable alternative. #1’s feedback was the class was not effective or helpful … just took it as a chance to listen / practice Mandarin for 2 hours a week.

#2 scored distinction for Higher Chinese in PSLE and continued with HCL tuition in Sec 1. Marks dropped badly. Several others in the same tuition class also did badly. After one year I decided to withdraw, especially after #1’s feedback.

My view is that for HCL Education Centre may not be effective for students in IP school as the syllabus and lessons taught in different schools vary a lot. Maybe for O level students, HCL is more effective as the syllabus is more standard across schools.

Over the past few years, HCL expanded a lot and that may have affected the teaching quality for secondary classes. The secondary teachers are less hands on compared to the primary ones. I personally felt some policies became quite inflexible, while fees increased a lot. The Sec 4 class costs about $85 per lesson. There are cheaper alternatives elsewhere. However, being a very large tuition centre, there are many classes available and some parents may value that as it makes scheduling replacement classes much easier.

It was "painful" having to relive these S2 materials… Thankfully for maths, he was doing mostly on his own except for some word problems on trigonometry and circles where he needed more help. I only mark his work. For science, literally "pei du" for 2 months.

The best thing about this experience for was him to learn that there is no success without hard work.

      Dear parents

Any tuition centres contact to share, preferably in the west or bukit timah area. Son in sec 2 and thinks he needs more practise in maths, science.

      Thank you

Had a C for term 2 Science and attended school's remedial but is not helping him. Hence SOS, parents plse pm if you have any group tuition to recommed. Thank you.

My son was in similar situation a year ago... Eventually, we DIY to help him with maths and science to strengthen his concepts and patch the knowledge gaps he had. There were many topics in both subjects, and he was doing better in some but not others. Doing own revision at home enabled him to better focus on the weaker areas as the lesson plans of tuition classes outside may not be synchronized with HCI's. Another alternative is to go for one-on-one tuition.

For maths, as someone posted in this forum a year ago, make good use of the Shing Lee textbook. For S2, the boys are using Vol 2 and Vol 3. His maths teacher gave a list of questions for him to practise at home (usually from the revision and challenge section of the text books). There are answers provided at the back of the books, so it's easy to check if the kid's understanding and concepts are correct. Of course, re-doing all the class worksheets and assignments also helped. Nearer to the EOY, the teacher gave them lots of past year papers to do, including from NYGH. I gave him a thick exercise book for him to do all the maths questions instead of using foolscap or rough paper - by the end of EOY, he literally saw how much progress he made.

For science, analyze which topics need reinforcements. We mostly studied from the science notes given by the school, Chemistry parts - lots of applications type questions. Make sure can write the formulae and different types of equations (acid/bases, salts formation), and learn how to test for ammonia gas, H2 and CO2 etc. For the physics part, understand the concepts of reflection and refraction, make sure can do the calculations to calculate angles of incidences, reflection and refraction etc. For biology which is the last topic to be taught, a lot of pure memorizing for the reproduction systems. The ecosystems parts are easier - make sure he can score those.

For science practice, we redid and redid all the worksheets (esp the chem equations and reflection / refraction) and used the topical O level questions assessment book which his S1 teacher recommended for biology, chem and physics. The teacher also gave several past year papers nearer to EOY for practice.

End result - maths went up to 94% from C6 and lowest in class at CT2, Science was close to 90%, up from B4/C5.

    • RE: Any suggestions for family bonding time??

Try watching classic movies together for a change. Many of these movies have excellent plots and portray good values. A friend's kid starting an old movies blog... There are good titles there you can check out and borrow from the National Library.
