In the sense of fairness, I do believe the new scoring system is a more fair system as it gives due recognition to students who do well in all subjects, compared to those who are very weak in one but good in all the rest. But this is still not the most ideal system. I am very worried for my kid as he is weak in his mother tongue. This will pull down his grades. I’m not letting his do HMT as his basic is already so weak. He is reasonable good in his other subjects but most likely the new scoring system will not work in his favor. Haiz…

It’s good that MOE has released information about the new scoring system and points deduction for entry to SAP school with HMT in Chinese. Now one more piece of the puzzle is still missing. How does the scoring system change with affiliation based entry to secondary school. I can’t find any info on this. Is this information available yet?

With or without affiliation, I believe the new system benefits the all "A" student, not the ones who are better in some subjects. With the scoring system, they will be lumped with kids who are average in ALL subjects.
The subject based banding will not be up by the time our kids are in Secondary school. It’s a lose, lose system for the kids caught in between.

Can anyone advise? How does the COP translate in terms of A*, A, B, C etc? One of my kids will be in the new points scoring system - PSLE 2021 onward. It’s great that there is a historical COP for parents to help decide which schools are best suited for their kids. If any kind soul can assist in translating , your help is much appreciated.

Approximately 260 - minimum 3A1 and 1A2??,
240 - approximately 4A2?

So our kids will be entering secondary school in 2023. The year before they scrap the streaming and GCE O levels! :shock: Can you imagine being the last to sit for N and O levels before it is scrapped? I guess, they had to choose a year to implement it and it had to be 2024! Does anyone have any idea how this affects the IP schools and system?

PSLE in 2022 will be based on single digit points scoring system and MOE has released the scoring criteria. But how do we determine what is the cut off points for secondary school selection? There are COP lists in other forum threads but it does not apply to the new scoring system. Has anyone done a conversion for how the previous points translate to the new points??

I am adding the lunch box as I heard P1 kids will have an extra snack time in between lessons. If your son tends to misplace his stuff, you can consider getting name labels. I think you can buy the stationary any time, but some schools, like my son's school, require some items (socks, file folders, etc) to be bought from them.

Thanks for your reply. I will wait till the school orientation before buying socks and folders in that case. May I know where to buy name labels? I am also looking for iron on labels for clothes (esp PE clothes). DS is not responsible enough to keep his things responsibly at preset.

Just my take on Higher mother tongue in Tamil.

I suspect they offer HMT in Tamil because it is offered in Chinese and from P1 in SAP primary schools. If MOE does not give option to other languages, it may reflect badly on them as giving higher priority to Chinese language over the other languages.
If you don't get any extra points in PSLE, there is simply no real need to do it. The kids who are good in Tamil will do just fine by doing normal Tamil.
But nowadays more and more kids are finding it difficult to even converse in Tamil adequately. So even normal level of Tamil will be difficult. The problem is lack of expose to the language in early childhood. Even for enrichment classes, books and materials, it is so difficult to find them unlike for other languages, especially Chinese.
I wonder if there will be changes made to this in the new PSLE scoring system. They should offer deduction of points for children who do higher mother tongue to make it more worthwhile.
