    • RE: DSA 2020 - NUSH

Different people has different views. Sometimes the more you ask, the more confused you get. You know your child best and which domain is the most suitable for him. Just go ahead.

3 of DS’s classmates are awarded CO for leadership (to 3 different school). Apart from Edusave Scholarship, they are also recipients of ECHA and EAGLES. 2 of them are from Exco and 1 is an assistant CCA leader, non-prefect.

Many students have very strong credentials, including outside of school achievement. Ultimately, whether the child gets a CO or WL really depends on the his/ her performance during the interview. Awards and results help in selection round only.

When applying for IP, a very common question is ‘Why do you think you are suitable for IP Programme?’ It is good for child to answer “I have no tuition since P1 apart from chess, piano or dance lessons etc.”… this shows the child is an independent learner and more suitable candidate for IP. I learnt this from experienced parents whose kids are awarded CO or WL.

Despite this year is supposedly more difficult papers across all subjects, more than 10 students in my son’s class scored 268 and above. The rest are all well above 250. Only a few 240+. It appears that tough papers is better in differentiating the real smart (270 - 280+) versus the work hard.

Yes, my dd's class also achieved very very well, and the kids stay in my condo also got 250+, 260+ even 270+. I thought this year's paper was quite difficult. Don't know the cop points will shoot up high or not. Really hard to predict.

Last year the papers were supposedly relatively easy, many students did not do as well. Even a number of students from the TOP classes scored between 22+ to 23+. Indeed is so hard to predict. DSA is the best.

Montfort and St Gabriel accept their affiliated students into express stream at T-score of 188. Not sure if the school has so call best class, otherwise if they randomly assign the students to each of its express classes, your son learning might be impacted. Expect the pace to be slower. I prefer a school where the ability of the cohort is almost on par.

Are these 2 schools (Montfort and St Gabriel) Secondary, on pilot test run for the G123 system, whereby abolished Normal stream, require all Secondary stream students to complete taking National exam, in 4 years time ?

I think you are referring to this? Montfort is in scope for the pilot.

    • RE: Shall I appeal to MOE to check PSLE results?

Just side track a little. I thought the direction from MOE is to stop the ranking by explicitly stating 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc…? What is the purpose of the ranking when it does not mean 1st in level in prelim = 1st in PSLE.

On actual PSLE released day, there were a number of literally unknown dark horses from those average classes who also scored 250+. They should be around 220+ or 230+.

My kids’ school (also quite branded) already stopped the ranking. TOP few students are equally good, do not need to rank.

Fully agree with phtthp - purpose of appeal is just to understand where gone wrong in order to find a closure and also to understand which area to improve on.

In that case, proceed to request SEAB to check the results, find out what had gone wrong, to give yourself a closure (peace).

But, first question is ask your son
how did he fare for Science, both mcq + OEQ ? Maybe has to do with the marking scheme for Science, this year
Apart from science, what I can think of that caused much lower t-score as compare to prelim is oral (nervous, did not speak up enough) and composition (off topic). Both are relatively high weightage components.

Appeal is just to give a peace of mind but do not pin any hope, otherwise it is going to be another disappointment. There are several check points during PSLE marking and unlikely to have mistake or error.

    • RE: Shall I appeal to MOE to check PSLE results?

I am sorry to hear that. Usually prelim results is quite a good estimation of the PSLE score, especially if you are from the more reputable schools (by applying 0.72 - 0.75).

However, this is also not the first time I hear about TOP classes students who are expected to score at least 250+ ended up with 220+ or 230+. Some people may think it is because of Chinese but I do know of students who are strong in Chinese or rather almost equally strong in all 4 subjects, ended up with low T-score.

I hope your child is fine now. The path ahead is still long and he will become more resilient. Just 1 exam alone does not mean everything. Continue to be that outstanding one in secondary school and he will be able to get into a good JC 4 years later.

Remember - Gods plans will always be greater and more beautiful than all your disappointment.
