      Hi again πŸ˜„ I'm a GEPer from RGPS P6 '10.

For RGPS, class sorting is random and the teachers spread the people with similar characters out into different classes.. or so I think. So each class has both troublemakers and academically better ones. However, class R from P Q and R always has the HCL pupils.

      TREX8:
I think different schools have different ways of assigning classes. DD's school was not based on Cl or HCl. Rather random, maybe more to spread out the 'trouble-makers'.
      Zann:

I was told from P4 to P5 yes due to selection of HMT. For those who are still doing HMT, not sure whether there will be movement too?

      Your welcome πŸ˜„

For the interviews, I didn't prepare, and most others didn't either, but if you would like to I'd suggest prepare a self-introduction. My first few interview questions from RGS were \"Please introduce yourself\" and \"What are three adjectives others would use to describe you\".

... And people said the NYGH interview was interesting and enjoyable.

Also, for RGPS, we had a DSA Interview workshop and one of the pointers was to read the news for maybe a week or so before the interview because sometimes they might ask you about your opinions about recent affairs.

Once more, good luck for DSA and PSLE πŸ˜„

      ... And Sec 1 here I come! πŸ˜‰

      TREX8:
Hi, tks for the detailed feedback, especially with regards to the interviews - what more, directly from a girl who had just gone through the experience. Personally, I feel that 'preparing\" kids for interviews tned to result in them not being able to think on their feet and them giving very formuliac (but insincere) responses. Skills like how to present oneself, how to appear confident without seeming to be arrogrant, body language, tone of voice etc would be more useful.

Will take up your suggestions when guiding DD on her portfolio.

Wishing you a wonderful time in RGS and maybe, later in the year, you can share with us your experiences in RGS and maybe that of some of your friends' who are in NYGH. Might help when we need to decide between RGS and NYGH.

      :thankyou:
      -:

Hi πŸ˜„ I'm a GEPer from RGPS P6 '10, and I'm going to RGS next year. I got my DSA to both NYGH and RGS.

For NYGH, I would say it's an easier process compared to RGS. Most pupils who applied, say 80-90% got in. Close to half of that group got in without interview. Those who've gone for interviews comment that the questions are not typical interview questions one would have prepared for, and assess basically the personality I would say. Such weird questions include \"Would you rather a screwdriver or a hammer?\" Something like that.

For RGS, most also got in. For the interviews, a group got the typical questions and a group didn't. My close friends all told me about the non-typical questions such as \"Do you think printing other schools' exam papers online are an act of infrigement of copyright?\" πŸ˜‰ But I got those typical questions like \"Why would you choose RGS?\" that I hadn't prepared for and didn't expect 😒 So anyway, much thinking on the spot.

RGS did not look at my portfolio and of those who were interviewed with me, only one had to give them her portfolio but that was only cos they needed the list of her certs. So I think a very basic portfolio with a content page and list of certs would do. And maybe get a nice folder πŸ˜‰ Or at least that's what I did.

    • RE: All About GEP

Hi all, I'm a GEPer from RGPS, P6 this year.

I think that portfolio is largely based on interest, so as to ensure the child does his best. It also cultivates interest - If you're more interested in internet gaming, there's no point doing a portfolio about Lee Kuan Yew. It kills time, it kills interest, AND most probably you won't do too well.

And another hint - In P4, I was on top of projects and stuff like portfolio, scored full marks. Two years ago, we had to do three portfolios instead of two. Moving on, I was more lax. Late nights more frequent. I told my mum I'd finish my portfolio (final submission) by the end of 1st week of June holidays, but we ended up camping up in front of the computer for hours into the night the day before submission. And I didn't do well. This year, I've finished both portfolios before SA1 πŸ˜„

      The PROCEDURE:
First of all, what are you (the child) interested in?
How can you relate the topic to the society, history, etc? Or maybe, what different contrasting views are there?
Next - Collecting information. That's when you load up your bags with books, jam up the computer with sites that don't load, buy stacks of newspapers that...
I think that it's best to have a wide spread of resources. News, books, and the net. One word - Exposure.
You may also consider carrying out surveys, interviews, experiments, etc.
Well then, write the report with an accompanying β€œartifact”. The report is most probably a narrative of the artifact.

The topics that I have done:
P4: My Great Grandfather’s Diary (History of Singapore); Pocket Money – How much is enough? (Survey); My mother is a working mother (Contrast between housewife and working mum, i.e. pros and cons of each)
P5: Changes in Education: The Singapore Story; Tuition Mania
P6: Global Warming requires Global Action; Extending our Hearts to the Disabled

      DON’T PLAGERIZE.

      Forms of presentation:
      Report – Write up
Artifact – Menu, Model, Poster, Picture Album, etc.
We’re also allowed to combine the report and the artifact – Diaries, journals, etc. Or if you have done and interview/survey, that can count as the artifact and be presented in the report.

      Hope this is useful πŸ˜‰

And well, my teacher seperates Portfolio 1 from 2. Meaning the Portfolio 1 draft was due in March and final in May. The Portfolio 2 draft was due May and final in July. But no harm finishing them early.

Forgot to add - I’ve been using models since P1; still using models.

I personally feel that models helps visualizing. Its like an alternative to algebra. Both are the same to me, just one with numbers, the other with pictures.
