Hi mummies and daddies, i would like to hear some comments. If my son is delayed in speech, would sending him to ICR programm helps? My DS3 will be turning 4 in jul this year. He is delayed in speech, i suspected that he is delayed in language too. Very worried for his k2 n p1. My ds1 is not delayed but he has problems coping with p1 as i did not send him for any enrichment classes, nor hv the time to coach him at that time. Since my ds3 is delayed, need a lot more effort to prepare him. Please advise. Thanks

Hi, perhaps you should send him to a child psychiatrist for an assessment to find out if he really has a speech problem. From there, they will be able to guide you along, and recommend the necessary steps.

KKH has this service, I believe. One of my kids was very slow in learning, so I sent him to see the psychiatrist. Turned out that he hasn't any problem, but just need a foundation in phonics to be able to read well. Given your son's young age, I believe if you pick up any problem early and step in quickly, there wouldn't be any worries later on.

Do you guys and girls know of any Chinese Enrichment Center that is similar to I CAN READ, where the child progress through the course base on ability, and not age?

I want to send my p3 boy to Hua Cheng, but the school did an assessment of him and find his foundation to be very weak. Hence they told me frankly that while they do not reject any students, they believe he may have great difficulty in catching up with the pace, as students there are taught many words or shengzi that are way beyond school texts. I believe such is the standard practice of many language center.

How then can I help my boy enjoy Chinese without being so exam or syllabus oriented? I do not mind a center that focus on fun, and is not so exam oriented.

If no such center is available, then is there one where they can and have classes that caters to weak students?

I am glad that your gal and you have came to make a good decision and have pick up the maths skills again.

I agree that no matter what system or enrichment centre one send the kids to, it is still ultimately whether the kid can adapt to the method. An enrichment centre may be so great so great to most, but there are bound to be some who just don't get it. No point spending money and ended up frustrated instead. Anyway, a lot of maths whiz don't go through abacus wah

As for me, I am still considering. Maybe yes, maybe no, I'll think about it this week

Anyway, I notice something funny when I brought my boy to the centre to take a look last week. I watch their tv which features all their whiz kids on local variety shows, as well as the newspaper article and some of the interviews. Seems that almost all those featured are wearing specs! I can't help but wonder has it got to do with the abacus, because it is so small. Imagine hunching over the small beads to count count count Why don't they have bigger abacus instead???? :?

I am about to sign my k1, p1 and p4 for cma, but after reading your article, I am really reconsidering now.

I didn’t realise there are so many formulas to remember! Like the good friends, good neighbours, good brothers stuff! My god! Don’t these complicated maths!!! I mean, in the first place, it is not an easy subject, by introducing all these stuff kind of make it worse, doesn’t it?

Parents with kids who have gone through these, could you kindly share?

Btw, Onyva, perhaps MPM may be more suitable for your gal? That is another option I am considering, but it is so expensive.

I have no idea at all regarding the branches. Just chose Novena cos it is closer to my house, but I notice it is seldom mentioned here.
