RE: GEP Preparatory Program
Nah
Don't go bootcamp with hopes of making it. This was just a fluke. Many parents do sustained practice since before Primary 1. Many even have private tuition.
We do recommend some exposure to GEP style questions. Why? Well since you are sitting the test, why not familiarise yourself with the style and method? At the very least, you don't get a culture shock! Cos the questions are so terribly different from much of what primary 3 students are used to so far! At the very least, you have a bit of fun or challenge while sitting in the exam hall a few hours. And not like be totally blur.
The Math and English GEP questions will come back again in your school life, in upper primary. It is no loss to be exposed to some of it now. -
RE: GEP Preparatory Program
It’s not generosity, since we have finished these things. Won’t be coming down this path again. For sample examples, there’s plenty of people online with used worksheets.

RE: GEP Preparatory Program
FOR SHARING. Would be curious to hear reviews of Global Education and TLL prep classes.
Added comment to the question below: we are talking about competitive companies here. Can’t be advertising isn’t it. We are also very curious to hear other reviews. GEP is so hush-hush and opinions so closely guarded. We are done with the GEP prep, so why not talk about it?
We attended Joyous Learning and Mindstretcher bootcamp programmes for the selection exercise, both in 2020. Both had online programmes. They sent worksheets to us prior to the start of the workshops and the sessions took place mostly on Zoom.
Cost? Similar at around $450-500 per bootcamp. JL two days, three hours each. MS three days, four hours each. You do the worksheets first and the teacher will discuss the answers online. Both gave commonly asked questions in Math English and General Ability and talked about how to solve the questions.
Verdict? Mindstretcher wins hands down. Our kid said that going to Joyous Learning is like just doing assessment paper, especially for English, nothing outstanding or special. For Math, even though the questions were classified, e.g. "Guess and Check" and "Interval" and so on, the teacher provided the worked solutions to the individual questions. We are surprised by how perceptive kids can be, especially even if they don’t have any basis for comparison.
Once we saw what Mindstretcher was doing, however, JL once again paled by comparison. MS carefully presented each TYPE of question by first explaining what it is, and then gave several EXAMPLES how the questions could manifest, e.g. how you should think about an interval where there is lamp post at the START and END of the road, or when it is a closed circuit like in a circle, or when there is a lamp post at the START but NOT at the end. The questions then got you to apply the concepts accordingly.
Same goes for the MS English. Teacher more skilled at explaining why the given answers are the correct selection, as compared to the other possible options. Different teacher deals with different segments. For cloze, teacher started lesson by giving comprehensive tips for tackling the cloze. Really good.
JL squeezed more money out of us with "exam style papers" where students take a mock test and then the teacher goes over the questions like in the workshop. Each test paper costs $120. The tutorial that discusses the answers is similar to the bootcamp workshop.
Once you get an idea what GEP style questions are like, it is completely possible if you are hardworking or passionate or both, to go look for cheaper alternatives to supply your child with practice questions. There’s a lot in various assessment books. No need to part with so much money to try out more than one or two programmes. Our child didn’t prepare actually, because we totally forgot about GEP, so we just went for one bootcamp for Round 1 and one bootcamp for Round 2. -
RE: 2018 P1 registration exercise for 2019 intake
byfn08:
Sorry to ask this silly question. If a school need to ballot in phase 2C <1km, does it mean those in phase 2C 1-2km will stand a lower chance and unlikely to get a place in the school? I am using grandparent's address to register so will fall under phase 2C 1-2km category.
If address is outside 1km, likely no chance to get into Chongfu. Even under 1km may need balloting. Best to have two or three other alternatives. -
