I agree with Cool Nurse. Personally I prefer an all rounded education that includes good exposure to CCA, humanities and mother tongue. But I understand some students are keen to have an early specialisation in Math and Science, then NUSH is the perfect choice.

I have a Y3 child in NUSH. It is a great school for students who wish to specialise in STEM subjects but the exposure and consequently nurturing of students in the humanities is limited. For e.g. there is inclusion of literature within the English module only in Y1. For Y2-Y3, students select and specialise in 1 humanities module which can be literature, history, geography or music or art. This means effectively after Y1, students only get exposed to 1 humanities subject. It seems less exposure than even O lvl schools where students need to study humanities in S1 and S2.

For my child who is ‘adverse’ to humanities, it is great and he spends time on his STEM subjects including Olympiad training. For others who may prefer more exposure to humanities, this could be a drawback.

Having said that, students who are keen on humanities definitely have many avenues to pursue - you can choose to take part in English Interest Group and model United Nations etc.[/quote]@Musings - Thanks for sharing!

NUS High School

One must remember that NUSH takes in a maximum of 170 in each cohort only, 6 classes of 25-27. Thus, every CO given out is a fairly coveted one - given by a school which can see the child's potential/aptitude in STEM subjects primarily. In the past, about 2000-2200 apply each year. 170 is about 1/3 of an average cohort in the other popular DSA schools. A much smaller group which the teachers are then able to pay attention to each and every student.

CCAs and student leadership opportunities are still there, and a sufficiently diverse range is on offer (again, considering the small cohort size).

NUSH has students who have the ability to pursue STEM subjects at a much faster pace and thus the basic curriculum is already Accelerated, over and above the other schools. Yet, some students can still go faster - and these are given the chance to accelerate and take subjects well ahead of their peers (eg. Y1 student can take Y2 or Y3 Maths even). The distinctly unique modular University style modular system (right from Y1) allows students to take extra modules, as electives or enrichment. They will not be bored, and be stuck at learning at a pace which is slower than their ability. For some, this is an attraction. *(@icez118 - The atmosphere amongst parents is fairly relaxed and supportive of their children. Students who need extra consultations can always call on their teachers for such sessions, and the school has a culture whereby seniors and alumni come and tutor their juniors. Its a \"tuition free\" environment as the running joke goes that no tuition or enrichment centre can do tuition for NUSH kids as their curriculum is very unique and cuts across the normal curriculum O/A level range)

In the upper specialisation years (Y4-Y6), the students can also take modules in NUS/NTU (and credits obtained will enable them to be exempted from these modules should they go to NUS/NTU in the future), again they can be stretched. In Y5 the students do a Advanced Research Project (year long) and also stay in campus (Boarding) as part of their learning journey in the school. There are therefore unique learning experiences, quite different from what else is on offer. A comparison of what is \"all-round education\" must therefore take into account the above, which many may not be familiar with.

Lastly, there are also experiences for the students to go on Overseas trips to top high schools in Europe, and Asia - something which is unique to the high school experience the students will have.

NUS High is therefore an \"apple\" and thus you can't always compare the other oranges you have with it.
