      Dear weaker students (Math),

      This blog is for you: I will go through the basics on there hopefully on a daily basis so that we can learn and improve together. This is free.

      From now to PSLE, even though it feels like time is running out, rest assure that if you are willing to learn and master at least a question a day, you can still pick yourself up and push yourself further. Believe in yourself, final lap let's go.

      Jerico:
      Hi, Appreciate if someone can help with the following questions :-

      (1) The average of 9 numbers is 62. If 1 is added to the first number, 2 is added to second number, 3 is added to third number and so on up to the ninth number, what is the new average ?

      (2) Mr Shariff works as a salesperson at Tukki Boutique. He earns a basic salary of $1700. He also earns $3 for every $50 of sales he makes. Last year, the total sales he made was $54000. What was his average monthly earnings ?

      Thank you in advance !
      Hello Jerico,

      1) 1 + 2 .... + 9 = 45.
      Total for all the 9 numbers is 9 x 62 = 558.
      Adding 1 to 1st, 2 to 2nd and so on is equivalent to adding 45 to total. So 45 + 558 = 603.
      new average -> 603 / 9 = 67

      2) every $50 of sales = earns $3
      $54000 of sales = earns (54000/50) x 3 = $3240
      $3240 was what he earned for the whole year, so $3240 / 12months = $270 per month.
      His average monthly earnings = basic salary + $270 = $1700 + $270 = $1970.

      Hope this helps!

      Please someone help on this question.. Thanks so much!

      Dora has 2 litres of milk. She used 7/12 litre to make strawberry milkshake. The remaining milk was used to make chocolate milkshake .
      A) How much milk was used to make chocolate milkshake?
      B) how much more milk did she use to make chocolate milkshake than strawberry milkshake ?
      Hi Belnanna,

      Not sure if the question was intended to simply be a fraction question or...
      anyway,
      a) 2 litres - 7/12 litres = 1 & 5/12 litres
      b) 1 & 5/12 lites - 7/12 litres = 5/6 litre

      Hope this helps

      One more question pls !!

      Box A contains 50 cents coins and Box B contains 20 cents coins. There are 19 more coins in Box B than in Box A. But the amount of money in Box A is $1.30 more than the amount of money in Box B. How much money is in Box A?
      Hi again,

      If the number of coins in both boxes is the same, then we would have 19 x $0.5 more, which is $9.5 more. Adding this to the existing amount A has more than B, we have a total of $10.8 more in A than B.

      One $0.5 is more than one $0.2 by $0.3.
      So, to get $10.8 more, we need $10.8 / $0.3 = 36 sets

      This means there are 36 twenty cents coins and 36-19 = 17 fifty cents coins.

      Total value in A = 17 x $0.5 = $8.5

      Hope this helps!

      vsk:

      Please help with the following Q:

      David bought a new LED TV for $1155 and spent 2/11 of his remaining money on a bag. Then he bought a pair of jeans for $175. If he had 1/11 of his original money left.

      (a) find the ratio of the amount of money spent on the TV to the amount of money spent on the bag (express in simplest form)

      (b) how much money did he have at first ?

      TIA

      Please help to solve this question.

      Hello vsk,

      $175 + 1/11 of the original money = 9/11 of the remaining money
      divide by 9:
      $19 & 4/9 + 1/99 of the original money = 1/11 of the remaining money
      times 11:
      $213 & 8/9 + 1/9 of the original money = 11/11(all) of the remaining money

      So, $1155 + $213 & 8/9 + 1/9 of the original money = all of his money
      $1155 + $213 & 8/9 = 8/9 of the original money

      ($1155 + $213 & 8/9) divide by 8 then times 9 = original money = $1540.

      a)
      Ratio of TV : BAG
      ........$1155 : ($1540 - $1155) x 2/11
      ........$1155 : $70
      ..............33 : 2

      b) $1540

      hope this helps!

      Please help! Thanks.

      A group of people met at a party. Each person shook hands with everyone else. Mr Li shook hands with 3 times as many men as women. Mrs Li shook hands with 4 times as many men as women. How many men and how many women were there at the party?
      Hello hnghng,

      For Mr Li,
      M : W
      3 : 1, total 4

      For Mrs Li,
      M : W
      4 : 1, total 5

      However, the total number of handshakes for Mr Li and Mrs Li should be the same. Therefore we should make the total we have for our ratio earlier the same. Doing so we multiply the first ratio by 5 and the second one by 4. And we will get

      For Mr Li,
      M : W
      15 : 5, total 20

      For Mrs Li,
      M : W
      16 : 4, total 20

      Therefore, the total number of men is 16 and for women it is 5.

      Hi ILLUSDUCA,

      Thanks for solving my problem.
      Sorry another question needs help:

      http://i60.tinypic.com/312iy4j.jpg\">

      :thankyou:
      We can see it as pears have 7u in total and apples have 5u in total
      1u of pears and 1u of apples = 26
      2u of pears and 2u of apples = 52
      5u of pears and 5u of apples = 130 fruits
      If 5u of pears and 5u of apples were gone, then only 2u of pears are left
      so, 140 - 130 = 10 pears = 2u
      1u = 5 pears
      7u = 35 pears

      hope this helps!

      ALAN took 4 hr to travel from town p to town q.Sally took 6 hr To travel from town q to town p. Alan started traveling at 1130am from town p towards town q. 1 hr later, Sally started traveling from town q towards town p. At What time did they pass each other.

      Hi chloecube,

      1 hour later, Alan has traveled 1/4 of the journey, so the rest of the journey, which is 3/4, will be traveled by both Sally and Alan.

      Alan's speed -> 1h = 1/4 of the journey
      Sally's speed -> 1h = 1/6 of the journey
      Their speed added together = 1/4 + 1/6 = 5/12 of the journey per hour.

      3/4 divide by 5/12 = 1 & 4/5h
      = 1 hour and 48 minutes later

      11.30 + 1h = 12.30pm
      12.30pm + 1h + 48 minutes = 2.18pm

      Here's a video of another question (on part b) to show why we add their speed together http://youtu.be/56Wnws67lxQ

      hope this helps!

      2632parent:
      Can anyone help me with the following question

      1) A bus has a capacity for 36 adults or 54 students. After 3 teachers and 39 students have boarded the bus, what is the maximum number of students that can still board the bus?

      Thank you
      Hello 2632parent,

      36 Adults : 54 students, simplify -> 2 : 3, which means 2 adults = 3 students.
      3 teachers = 4.5 students
      So, 3 teachers + 39 students = 4.5 students + 39 students = 43.5 students.

      54 students (max cap) - 43.5 students =10.5 students
      Maximum = 10 students.

      Hope this helps
