RE: All About Choosing and Buying Pianos
Dreamaurora:
Today I went to visit Renner Piano to try out some of their pianos for sale.
A few noteworthy ones (all brand new):
Ellington Custom (125 cm)
Price $6500
Gentle, mellower sound and not particularly loud. Suited to play impressionistic repertoire by Debussy, Ravel, etc.
Ellington Professional (132 cm)
Price $8500
Sweet rich sound and reasonably powerful. The keys go up slightly slower than I would have liked (same complaint I had with Hailun HL-125), but as a result it is much easier to achieve legato touch. Think of this like a more refined HL-125. Romantic piano repertoire by Chopin, Elgar, etc sounds lovely on this piano.
Stainberg and Song
Price $5000
Obviously targeted as direct competitor to HL-125. The feel is similar to HL-125. This piano is naturally loud and no need to work so hard to produce a decent tone. Sound is rather hollow and quite pungent at louder volume but the actions have nice weight to them. I remember HL-125 has slightly better tone but actions are more floaty. Both Stainberg and HL-125 are very good piano at this price point and the decision to buy either of this piano will come to personal preference.
At 5K-9K price range, there are plenty of options to choose from. Yamaha's U1J retails at $7500 and judging from the display set at Yamaha PS, the quality is much improved compared to last time. Action is much more precise now and sound is mellower compared to Japan made U1. Pianomaster retails HL-125 that is quite popular nowadays, but I still prefer the Rosler that they carry.
If you plan to buy any of above mentioned pianos from Renner Piano, do quote my name (Charles Wu) to Mr Ho yeah.
Hey there thanks for those information. I made a trip down to PianoMaster yesterday and tried out some of the pianos. I was quite impressed with Hailun HL125, especially when it is a Chinese make piano. It has a very nice sound and the quality is quite good, I like it very much. Most importantly it's affordable!
The second piano that I tried was Rosler. Not sure of the model but it costs $4800. It sounds brighter and more cheerful than the Hailun and Jason mentioned that it is more suitable for leisure playing.
Also tried one of the Petrof models, absolutely love the sound and the touch. The bass is very strong. I would say, that's love at first sight. But the price, was way way way off my budget.
Getting a Petrof will only be possible if I strike the lottery.
All these 3 pianos have keys that are significantly heavier than the Yamaha JU109PE that I saw....
Would most probably be choosing between Rosler and Hailun. -

RE: Where to buy LEGO
You can probably take a look at Barnes and Noble Singapore. Sometimes they have discounts and free shipping services.

Alternatively you can look out for Metro sales or Secret chamber sales. They usually come with 20% discounts. Hope that helps.

RE: Teacher Dreamaurora - Piano Q&A
Hi there Teacher Dreamaurora,
I would like to ask if there are any techniques to improve finger strength, especially for the 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers. I’ve come across pieces that needs me to play thirds using the 3rd and 5th finger. And also trills on the 4th and 5th fingers. I am experiencing great difficulties with that as I play, C&E together, then D&F, then E&G. How do I improve on that?
TIA. -
RE: Where do you have your haircut?

RE: All About Piano Lesson Costs
The music that I am currently attending charges $150 for Grade 4, for a 45 mins lesson x 4 , which i think it’s very reasonable. However, I do feel that 45 mins is rather short for grade 4 as there’s quite a lot of things to learn in both theory and practical.
