Hi Parents, considering to put NJC or ACSI as second choice for ds who scored 258.
Both schools are very good schools.
Heard NJC has a lot more girls than boys.
ACSI is a boy school (ds prefers boy school). But it’s a Methodist school. Is it a problem for free thinkers to be in a Methodist school?
Thanks.

RE: I Can Read - Discussion

My DS has completed the programme. His centre also didn't narrow down no. of spelling words. We have to go through all but only being tested by handful, due to time constrain I believe. In later part, my DS's class was bugging the teacher to test more words instead because all of them enjoy doing it! FYI, book 6 is toughest and required more work. Spelling was just a breeze when they hit book 6. I would say take it easyJanice2012:
My son started ICR program at his 5 and now in book 4. He progresses in reading well, but struggling with spelling.
Although teacher says spelling is not the focus, she always randomly chooses 10 out of 40-60+ words to test children. I asked teacher to narrow down the spelling word list but teachers refused to do so. The admin also said reading, rather than spelling is their focus.
But the prob is they still have the test every week!
I've been always struggling to prepare my son for the 40-60+ words every week. but overwhemed with so mAny words, my son cannot do well.
I suspect if such an approach can really help my son learn any new words / spelling ultimately. Or just ruin his confidence or interests in English...
Any parents have the same concern? any suggestions to cope with the pressure?
Thks!
Thanks! Ur DS is amazing! Hope my son can come to that stage some day! -

My kid is now into the last lap of the ICR program...initially the spelling words is really too many and i didn't really prepare my kid (was stressed about it & it kinda of turn me off too actually..haha..)
So, I only focus on reading with him ..either hear him read or i read...etc...
BUT,when it's near to the later term...they only have 8 spelling words every week and i m surprised my kid able to do it without much help from me..
BTW...we also read the Peter & Jane series, so prehaps it does helps here & there
Thks!
Thank you so much for your kind suggestion! Guess I need to learn frm
U by relieving my son and myself from such spelling pressure...
Hope my son can cope wt spelling like ur kid some day!
But I really cannot understand why ICR follows such an approach. If they don't expect children to really memorize or learn at the stage, why have the test??? -
