    • RE: JEI/PSLE Math - Discussion

      Hi Kim,

I agree that tutor is very important… i put my child in a centre which when i call they say can help him in brushing up his math especially in problem sums. Though i had withdrawn him after few months, he had lost all confidence n interest in Math due to the tutor. He kept berating my son slowness and shouted at him when he had errors in front of the class which cause him to lose total confidence. They have very good programs but lousy tutors for that centre.

      phtthp:
based on your sharing, it seems that certain On-sponge Tr show favortism to High ability students, vs those slower ones in grasping / understanding Maths concepts.

Hi you are right... but not all centres are the same and the one which i came across are not so clear in explaining the concepts. Based on reviews, i have thought to enrol my child in onsponge to brush up the problem sums.My child did not tell me but seems rather upset n down after each lesson. I feel that they should have been more encouraging instead of putting the child down by not being able to understand the concepts or making mistakes. There are few occasions whereby i came earlier in between lessons and overheard and that is when i know about this.

I feel that different centres have different coaches and readly have to attend few lessons to find out if is indeed beneficial to your child. Based on what i had encountered , it seems that if your child is higher ability then maybe more beneficial, if your kid is a slower learner, they assume that the kid already know and is impatient if they do not understand. And worst, they make comparisons with other kids in class instead of explaining and that dimishes their confidence with the subject.

I think unless your child is those self motivated type, cf will be good. As compared to other schools, CF rely alot of parental involvement n sending of kids to tuition etc to catch up with the curriculum. I would think that their focus is more on academic than character building.
