      Heyo!
I noticed that this was one of the more extensive violin buying selling threads coz it's been going since 2013, so I decided to ask for help here
I'm planning to start learning violin and as a beginner's option I was thinking of the Synwin SV1005 outfit which sells for S$160.50. I was wondering if anyone would object to that or recommend something with more bang for its buck?
Oh and does anyone know if the outfit comes with a shoulder rest?
      Thanks a lot!
Firstly, don’t buy one before you consult your violin teacher. Otherwise your money could be wasted if he/she has a different opinion. A good teacher should be able to loan you one to try on for your first lesson.

Secondly, the price varies depending on the size of the violin. The size depends on the length of your arm. So for example some petite adults would not get a full size violin but maybe 3/4 size would suit their arm length better. The violin shop would be able to advise you on the correct size.

The Synwin beginner model is reasonably priced. I am not fussy, in fact I bought the Synwin cheapest model for my beginner son. Even now at Grade 3 he is using the cheapest model. Expect lots of extra costs like shoulder rest (separate cost), music books, etc. I had to change the default chin rest (middle type) to a side type for my son because it was very uncomfortable for him. Individual preference.

Some teachers also advise upgrading the default strings, default (free) rosin, etc etc...these are up to you. Supposedly they improve the sound. But I made my beginner son improve his basic technique first. Then upgraded when the strings became rusty.

If you can afford to wait, and wish to save some money, I also recommend waiting for the Gramercy Christmas sale to get your beginner violin. The discounts are quite substantial. Twice a year (June and Dec) Gramercy violins become cheaper than Synwin.[/quote]
I see, thanks for the advice!
Hahaha I already measured my arm length and compared to online size charts, and apparently I'm suitable for 4/4 so no price reduction for me :moneyflies:
Yeah I agree, technique is more important at the earlier stages of instrument learning.
Would you happen to know how the Gramercy violins fare in quality against the Synwin ones? Or I'd imagine it doesn't really matter for beginners at all?
