Notabene:

From what I learnt talking to the Science Teacher at TA, the issue of only doing one science is flexible. Yes, it effectively means giving up one's art form as per IB subject groupings if you choose double science, but from my understanding, SOTA would form a class for double science on a needs basis each year for \"exceptional\" students. Interestingly, one of the students asked to present a talk at TA to parents was a Y3 student who has fallen in love with science and is seriously considering pursuing two sciences. Also, I know of another IB student from a non MOE International School (who is on track for 45) who only has one Science but is looking at pursuing a Biomed degree overseas. She has done her research, spoke to admissions at the Uni she is hoping to go to and was told specifically that her subject choice re one science is adequate for entry and she did NOT need to drop her Artform. I think it depends on where and what specifically you are choosing to study, as it differs from Uni to Uni. There are many in SOTA who discover a latent love for science (maybe it's the way it's taught?) and are caught in this dilemma but are told they can still stay in SOTA despite dropping artform, provided they can timetable the double science.

Hi everyone. Have been reading this thread because DD is on WL (Literary Arts) for SOTA. I emailed SOTA to ask about double science because for Literary Arts have to switch to Film/Theatre in Y5 and Y6. This was their reply :

In Year 5 and 6, IBDP student is required to take 6 diploma subjects.

Student who would like to take additional science subjects has to switch their art subject (in your case, Film or Theatre) to another science subject while continue honoring the arts by taking an interdisciplinary Group 1 & 6 subject, Literature and Performance.

Just thought I'd share, in case anyone else had the same question. Not sure if it would apply to the other art forms.

I hear you and I know that dealing with autism is also a marathon, not a sprint.


Yes there are many people out there to make a quick buck by preying on the parents. But there are also many doctors and therapists who are working hard to figure out which therapy works better, so that families get the best bang for their buck. This is so that families do not end up broken because they have bled their life-savings chasing the next cure.

HBOT has been used for many different diagnosis, but the evidence for its use with autism is not strong.


This is from August 2011, Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders
"We sought to determine whether HBOT leads to parental reported behavioral changes and alterations in cytokines in children with ASD. Ten children completed 80 sessions of HBOT and all improved by 2 points on the clinician-rated CGI-I scale (much improved) as well as several parent-completed measures of behavior. The lack of a control group limits the ability to determine if improvements were related to HBOT. Enrolled children did not exhibit abnormal cytokine levels at baseline and no significant changes in mean cytokine levels were observed. Although this study was limited by the small sample size and by the variable nature of cytokines, we found no evidence that HBOT affects cytokine levels or that cytokine levels were associated with behavioral changes."

Another article by Bryan Jepson, Doreen Granpeesheh, Jonathan Tarbox, Melissa L. Olive, Carol Stott, Scott Braud, J. Helen Yoo, Andrew Wakefield and Michael S. Allen in August 2010 also had similar findings. See abstract below.

"Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been used to treat individuals with autism. However, few studies of its effectiveness have been completed. The current study examined the effects of 40 HBOT sessions at 24% oxygen at 1.3 ATA on 11 topographies of directly observed behavior. Five replications of multiple baselines were completed across a total of 16 participants with autism spectrum disorders. No consistent effects were observed across any group or within any individual participant, demonstrating that HBOT was not an effective treatment for the participants in this study. This study represents the first relatively large-scale controlled study evaluating the effects of HBOT at the level of the individual participant, on a wide array of behaviors."

Not my opinion…just something gathered from the journals. Hope that helps you a bit.

But if you are looking for HBOT, I think it is available at SGH, TTSH and another place at Camden.

Hi there. I've been using Rubbermaid - easy to clean and BPA-free. Just have to make sure it snaps close. Of course, it will eventually leak after continued use.

Development is broadly grouped into Motor, Language, Adaptive/Cognitive and Personal/Social. Developmetal Delay is given as a diagnosis when the child does not achieve milestones (of one area) by expected age. Global developmental delay is in 2 or more areas.

Autism is a more complicated disorder to diagnose.

Some children with autism will also have delays in more than one area. Most will have delays in personal/social or language. There are children with autism with no cognitive problems.
