Isn’t it a bit too late to start the child on independent travel at 12?
I think it all depends on need of the family.
We stay very near the pri sch; hence, my kids walk to sch.
My #1 only started to travel occasionally in MRT when he was p5. Only when we receive his posting result of his sec sch, then we train him to take bus (more convenient and faster than MRT).
My #2 started to travel on public transport frequently between home and pri sch when he from p5 because we shifted house.
My #3 also started to travel frequently on bus when he was in p3. (We managed to transfer him to a sch nearer to the new home, but still a distant to walk).

Like to ask for DSA, must the child be in primary school CCA of the particular sport (eg floorball) in order to apply to secondary school for that DSA?
Hi,
I know of children who are not in the CCA in pri sch managed to DSA into a different/another CCA in sec sch.
Eg. A boy who ran very well DSA-ed and was given both COs for soccer and athletics by a popular boy sch in the east.
A boy who swims competitively (but never win and medals or awards) successfully received CO for water polo from a popular boy sch in Bishan.

• RE: GEP 2019

Hi, for P4 2019 onwards, when they reach P6, their PSLE results will be Achievement Level, no longer T-score. The advantage of HCL will be slightly different, not +1, +2 or +3.

To quote:
\"Although HCL results do not count towards the PSLE Score, if students with the same PSLE Score are applying for limited places in the same SAP school, those with better HCL grades will be allocated a place ahead of other students. This applies before the tie-breakers for Secondary 1 posting.

Let’s look at an example. There are 6 students competing for the last 2 places in a SAP school. They have been arranged in descending order of posting priority. The student who has a PSLE Score of 7 will gain admission to the SAP school. Then, out of the students with a PSLE Score of 8, the student with a distinction for HCL will be admitted into the SAP school next, ahead of the other students who also scored 8 but had poorer or no HCL score. The advantage that HCL students will obtain under the new system is similar to that under the current system.\"

This is the article on mobile phone usage in schools after a court case surfaced where the (rich) parent sued the school.

Hi, I saw the questions on notebook (laptop) and mobile phone; hence, here are my few cents worth:

1. Notebook / Laptop

I think it is school dependent.

There is no real need to buy notebook when your child enters secondary school. My #1 is currently in Sec 2 and the most he needs is words and power point. He used the one that we have at home and never once did he need to bring the notebook to school. All the softcopies that he needs were saved into thumbdrive. Once he download a special software for school's D&T work.

I have a niece who went to a good school in Bukit Timah area (in 2011). The school requires the students to get an ipad (if I am not wrong), co-payment for students who need financial help. Not sure if the school still has such practice.

I also heard that there is a secondary school near Bartley MRT station that required students to have notebook. But this was changed recently, perhaps due to new principal.

2. Mobile Phone

Though mobile phone is not really a need, the society has changed such that it is now necessary for the students to have a phone for communication, not just with the parents, but also with their teachers and peers.

I gave my #1 a mobile phone when he entered Sec 1 because there is a need to communicate with him as he needs to travel to school. The school has rules regarding phone usage and the students are afraid to have their phone confiscated, though some will try to outsmart the system. The Form, CCA and any other teachers use WhatsApp (WA) as the main form of communication. They will also give parents their numbers. But with so many chat groups (CG), and students sometimes spam the chat group, some important messages may be lost in the ocean of info. Some time, last minute info was disseminated to the students via WA-CG. The IT-native generation will have to cope with these \"problems\".

I made my child signed a contract before he got his phone. Using the contract, I confiscated his phone once for 1 week and sent a message to all the CG that he was unable to communicate with them for 1 week. Even his FTs thought something went wrong and messaged him. I replied saying that his phone was confiscated. From that day onwards, he knows I mean business and does not try to disobey the contractual terms anymore. He is more afraid of losing his \"face\" than his phone. 😂

Received VS call today for interview next week. My son DSA for Volleyball

My child's friend went for interview at VS on 17/7 (yesterday). Domain - Chinese Orchestra
Another friend going for interview on next Tue, 23/7. Domain - Track and field and soccer.
Hi, to add on, my child managed to find out that for Table Tennis, VS and CCHM have already informed the interviewees of their dates n time.
My child just finished the trial at DHS-table tennis. A total of slightly more than 20 boys were there and he knows that he's in the last group. He lost all matches n he knows that he won't be called up for interview. For us, it means closure for this year DSA journey.

Reminded him to focus on PSLE since he knows he's \"out\" of this DSA race.

To all parents whose children are still in the race, \"All the best to your children\"!
DS received 2 confirmed rejection 😭😭😭

It's okay Mummy. Like Taylor Swift sings, Shake it off. Concentrate on psle now. Playing this dsa game is like that, stats/chances are that most of us here will not get a CO or WL. But we try for the experience, and if lucky enough to get called for interview, take it as also free oral practice?
Feel better? Smile and have a nice day okay?

Haha thanks. The 2 rejections came from hci sports and NUSH.
Somehow I felt that this whole dsa thingy is very stressful for the mummy and very disappointing for the child.
When the child goes for psle, there is nothing mummy can do, but just to count on the child. But the dsa procedure is a different game. So hair pulling.
DS is going for the njc steam written test today. Does anyone knows if the side gate next to the bus stop in front of njc, is accessible? Or need walk all the way in to enter from the front gate?
Hi ApricotHoney,

I can understand how you feel. 2 years ago, my child went for 2 trials and 1 interview and was quite hopeful that at least 1 CO/WL will be given. But at the end, none 🤷 . It can be quite disheartening. Us, the parents, felt that time had been wasted.

After doing some reflecting, we think that it has been a good experience. It is also a good learning point for the child that life is not always a bed of roses. He learnt to face rejection and we all moved on from there, focusing on PSLE.

This year, another child is doing DSA and our point of view is rather different. We are taking a chance doing DSA as an alternative route to child's dream school, hopeful for a CO/WL :xedfingers: but ready for any rejection. We are still anxious but somehow less stressed knowing that it's a game of chance (with calculated risk? 😆 LOL) .

加油 every KS parents here. 2.5 more months to end of PSLE!

Based on my 1st child experience, I think the school (with IP and OP streams) will give CO to student without indicating IP/OP.

On the day of the release of PSLE results, the IP/OP will be indicated.
My child's classmates who are posted to VS and CHS IP have results that match the COP. Those who are posted to OP have results that are below the COP.

I don't know whether if it's coincidence.
I may be wrong (sample size is too small). But for students who are trying for IP-only schools, then results that qualify for express should suffice.
For dual-track IP schools like (Victoria, Cedar, Catholic High, SCGS, St Nick), at that point in time when submit the online Portal, because these 5 schools are dual-track, they give you an option to choose, what you want -

- choose IP only
- choose OP only
- choose 3rd option, called \"No Preference\", meaning you're not sure whether OP or IP track is more suitable for your son / daughter, so decide to let the panel of interviewers decide which track they want to offer you, after your child had sat for all tests / audition / interview attended

based on your above sharing, i would think that maybe for 2019 batch, what u shared might apply to \"3rd option\" could be possible, though i could be wrong too
Hi,
What I shared was for PSLE in the year 2017. in 2017, the floodgate was opened and students can try to DSA to as many school as they like. Only this year then there's a limit of 3 choices with IP/OP/no preference. So I'm not sure how the schools (with IP and OP tracks) offer their COs.... We shall wait and see how it goes this year.
