Hi,

For SST CO, my daughter is very normal compared to others. Other than her math and science hovering between AL1 and AL2, she does not join any Olympiads and whatnot.
If you ask me, it was the 2nd round of e-problem solving and interview that made her stood out. Everyone in the small grp presented own solution and then together they got to come up with 1 final solution. She took the lead when she saw no one else wanna talk. Dun even need to be correct solution. Just be confident. Show your enthusiasm.

So in my opinion, dun worry too much about building up portfolio. A child who is very interested in STEM will be able to display this passion naturally. We are surrounded everyday by science and maths afterall. I think the assessors wanna see this interest and passion.
My two cents.

Hi
Trying to find out in details what SST is looking for
for those who received CO from SST
Kindly share the portfolios of your child
Greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Besides AL1-2 in science/mathematics throughout
1. an online certificate course at http://www.aisingapore.org
2. participated in a science exhibition and clinched top prize
3. all those olympiads (participation-> no medals to the credit)
4. young scientist https://youngscientist.sscglobal.com.sg
5. a lot of coding (no certificate though) either at http://www.khanacademy.org or arduino kits ($20-$30 no more than that)

Pretty much all of them are done at zero/minimal costs and no tuition for any subject so far.

This is the reason why we chose to dsa NJC over Sota last year. After seriously consider the far future as my gal expresses her interest in sciences

Hi Juning,

this AEP (NJC) Is held after school in the afternoon, once a week.

Besides NJC students, other students from other Secondary schools also travel down to NJC, just to take AEP lessons.

Total, how many AEP classes are there, at NJC ?

Is it

- 1.5 AEP classes, for NJC own students,

plus

- another 2 more extra AEP classes, for students coming from all other (IP + O-level track ) Secondary schools combined together, attending lessons at NJC premises ?

I will try my best to answer as I didn’t go into details to ask my gal.

Lower secondary need to stay back every Tuesday for AEP
Senior need to stay back on Thursday for AEP

I’m not sure if they need to stay back for extra days during their senior years

NJC this year only have a class 10 to 15 for AEP
DSA CO usually 1 to 3

Exterior AEP from other school wasnt mix with NJC AEP class this due to covid. So I ve no idea which day they come
I am not 100% sure but it may have to do with the prerequisites for uni admission? Looking at the SOTA curriculum pdf, it looks like IBDP Category 6 (The Arts or Dance, Film, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts) must be taken at the Higher Level (IBDP has six categories, three are taken at Higher Level and three are taken at the Standard Level). Some uni courses may require certain subjects taken at HL and if you use up one of the three spots for The Arts (Category 6), you may not be able to meet the requirements for some courses (if your interests change dramatically)? I don't think this would block all uni courses, but perhaps some that require two sciences at HL.

In contrast, for students not involved in \"The Arts,\" Category 6 can be substituted with another class from previous categories.

I don't know about UK university, but US university will generally be willing to take in students with a wide variety of backgrounds / not so restrictive on prerequisites in grades 10-12 (or the last couple/few years before uni).

I think if u read the SOTA curriculum, by the time they get to Year 5-6, they will only take one science. I did hear of sota kids doing medicine eventually but this wld mean they will have to give up their art form so that they can do the sciences. The option is open but not common.

Tbh, a lot of us when we get to JC, don’t continue to do double Sciences. I only took physics in JC myself. If the child are into sciences, then SOTA is not the right choice for your child. I think this is the key consideration for now.

Yes, the standard for all IBDP (not just SOTA) is one science in year 5-6 unless you substitute out Category 6 (for another science). It is interesting if the SOTA kids have the option to drop their art form in Year 5-6. At one point, I was wondering how this worked (Category 6) for those who entered via Literary Arts but never found out.

I am fine zero science or two science in JC; it all depends on what the student is interested in doing. My comment above was more in the context of what type of hedge you have in place should interests change (and are some uni admissions harder / easier as a result). I don't have an opinion as to anything being better or worse...
This is the reason why we chose to dsa NJC over Sota last year. She only 12 year old, still a kid. Not yet 21. So her thinking is still child-like. Frankly at 12 yo, is too young to specialize. May regret later. Wiser to choose a more general education path, so that when she reach (16 to 18) yo, her thinking become more mature, in a clearer position to decide what she really want.

Many things can happen, after enter Secondary school. There are people after gotten into SOTA, 2 years later, want to quit because having experienced hectic life inside SOTA, realized is not their cup of tea, want to U turn back.

If she were to take up RGS Wait list, assuming that her WL will convert, she can still pursue her passion in Visual Arts, and at the same time still on track with the A level curriculum ? Isn't it the best of both world ?

============================

By the way,
If you find it hard to compare (SOTA-IB vs. A-level ) curriculum, never mind. After all, Is like comparing apple to an orange.

However, you can compare apple to another apple.

When you mention the word \"IB\", SOTA-IB curriculum is different from say, ( Methodist-Girls-IB or ACSI-IB) curriculum.

Minus away or strip off the Visual Arts portion, and compare the rest of the other same / similar subject elements.

You may go and do your own homework. Print out Sec 1 to 4 (SOTA vs. MGS) IB curriculum, year by year. Do some curriculum study, yourself.

You should be able to see the difference(s) there, how different or how far apart they are, although in principle, both have the same terminology, called \"IB\". Whenever you are not sure of something, this is a clue, what you can do.

After you have analysed where the difference(s) lie, between ( MGS vs. SOTA) IB, if you still want to proceed accept SOTA CO, you can still do so. At least, now you know what your daughter is in for at SOTA, right ? I mean, apart from the \"Visual Arts\" part.

Must always remember one thing. At 12 yo, Yes, she can be passionate about Arts, because she is still a child. But will she feel the same way, when she reach 21 yo, reach adult hood. You won't know.

Why ?

Because

A person's interests, can change along the way, through the passage of time and through life experiences, as they go through life.
Another thing to noted is RGS CO or WL doesn’t come by easy. If u have decided to go for a general route and can’t get WL converted will be post to SOTA automatically. Another option which may not appeal to most is to give up all and use result to get in RGS or another other dream schools. Which I felt your girl is capable of.

Very wise advise here. This was what went through our mind last year we we DSA our gal for visual art last year. Really need to discuss with the child and think through and explain. In the end my gal took the more general route and is happy doing AEP now.
