For 8-subject combination, in O-level Secondary schools (Express stream), not refering to Normal stream
1) some schools do Not offer any Triple Science Sec 3 class, not even 1 class
Example
One of the Secondary schools in Bedok, do not even open one Triple Science class
Other independent schools like
SST (School of Science & Technology), an example, where her Sec 4 students need to take O level,
does Not permit Triple Science in Sec 3, because her students need to take one compulsory \"Applied\" Sciences subject.
Some students here may prefer to go Polytechnic, instead of to JC
Eg. To popular Bio-medical Diploma course at Singapore Polytechnic, or at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, after their O-level. And after obtained or graduated from their 3-years Bio-medical Diploma, they can proceed to further education in local universities, or abroad overseas universities
2) for those schools that do offer Triple Science, usually is 1 class formed.
Unless that year, happen to have more demand, then maybe end up with 1.5 classes or sometimes, 2 classes opened
===================
However, under the same 8 subject combination, more Sec 3 classes are formed, under \"Double Humanities + Double Sciences\" subject combination, in O-level schools
Part of the underlying reasons, why Triple Science nowadays not popular are
A) when go up A-level, for Science stream students, as Chemistry is compulsory, got to take either Physics or Bio, means those who had
taken O-level Triple Sciences will need to decide, which one to dis-continue or drop, at A-level
Also,
Triple Science study workload is very heavy, not easy to handle.
Hence, some students at end of Sec 2 decided to opt for Double Sciences instead, to alleviate burden.
Example
Those students who are strong or who possess a natural flair in Mathematics, tend to choose Physics instead of Bio, in their Double Sciences. Upper Sec Physics subject itself, also have a lot of Maths calculation, involved. E.g. Kinematics, Forces, Energy, Electricity, Magnetism, Pressure, Heat, Wave Theory etc. Precisely bec there's a lot of calculations involved in Physics, and if your Maths is strong, that helps a lot in Physics. Maths and Physics, these two, go hand-in-hand
In contrast, Bio : no Maths computation involved. Not much connection with Maths. Totally a different field of study (or specialization).
B) the entrance qualifying criteria, to study Triple Sciences in Sec 3, set by individual schools that do offer, can be stringent (demanding)
Yes, you are right. Triple sci is really demanding. My sch has 3 trip sci classes, 3classes with double sciences¿, 2 classes for MEP; AEP and lastly two ALP classes.
Trip sci classes in my school normally end school at ard 3.30, with heavy workload plus high expectations set by Teachers. To qualify for trip sci, you have to score at least A1 for both sci and math, as for your other subjs, they have to at least be of average. Even though they filter students to diff trip sci classes based on elective chosen, we still know which class is the ‘top’ triple sci class.
I have many seniors from trip sci, and their Teachers always expect them to get A1 for their trip sci, A-math and E-math. If you get an A2, it’s considered ‘bad’ in a Teachers perspective as they seem to expect ‘better’.
For my senior, she had this chemistry teacher who ran a system like this:
If you get A1 for chem( quizzes, WAs etc. )you’re alright
If your TABLE PARTNER gets an A2 while u get an A1, you have to copy the entire paper/quiz twice bc your partner got an A2.
If you got a B3, your table partner got a B3 as well,
3+3=6 so...
each of them have to copy the entire quiz 6 times
I guess this does motivate students to get their A1, and yes trip sci is VERY STRESSFUL if you will crack under pressure.
