Just to add, before I get hamtum by you all, all the cases I know had very excellent results and the children are very happy and well-mannered children. No sign of stress in fact. Go getters I would say.
When my kids in primary sch, we just pour funds for their tuition esp for DS coz he's very diff in some aspects & my coaching is not below par but just that boys being boys, he throw a lot of excuses & try many times/ways to skive fr work & challenges & struggles with me a lot even at Pri 2. So I 吐血。He's very active & cldnt sit still. I've seen some parents relationships with kids go south, so decided to farm out coaching to tutors & tuition centres.
Originally started only for CL home tutoring, then coz everyday my child wld argue abt not doing workings for math as \"why I can see the answer & write str-away, why can't the teachers? I don't need workings coz I can see the answer in my head\". Sigh! What to do? PSLE rqmts are such must hv workings & modelling? So, I let him attend TLL & he accepts it better with a young lady standing in front of classroom & peers doing it. No choice but to 出血 lor.
Before we knew it, we caught ourselves paying for his English class coz TLL had a library full of interesting books (our local libraries don't carry) so we sign him up to encourage that huge reading appetite.
As I was entrolled & focussed so much on how his interests in Eng language (with his requests to 'design & publish' his own books, etc), I took ques fr his sch worksheets & saw patterns of weaknesses.
I was wrapped up in ensuring he learn all the correct techniques in the language & hence analyses his needs to refine some weak areas of transforming sentences (tenses & usage to convert direct/indirect speeches) & found that TLL wasn't effective for learning techniques. We then discovered how to did good teachers to zero in. At that point in time, we met Mr Sherman Tseng fr ACADEMIA & found Ms Agnes fr W@W to hone in his skills.
Yah, looking back, we've poured in tons of resources running ard town sending kids for tuition tt includes 汪老师 and every weekend schedule our grocery & errands ard tuition time. We've done wet marketing at Shun Fu mkt, super marketing @ Coronation Plaza & Bishan, etc. But our search for good teacher/coach is worth every effort coz not only is W@W & Academia a lot cheaper, it's more effective. I'm sure there are smaller scale centres that beat TLL anytime. So, no need pay sky-high expensive fee lah.
Did I waste time & :moneyflies: on my child? Think we did waste with TLL Eng & Sc but it was good to hv kept ourselves on the toes with our child's needs to push us to drop TLL & shift to Academia & W@W. I think so long as our kids are kept happy learning, I've to accept it as \"investment for his future\". Moreover, we didn't let it be an end but use the materials for revision as a means to an end. This mummy kept using the materials to sit & revise impt concepts (TLL Math & Sc materials) & techniques in compo/作文/口试 (W@W & 汪老师 materials).
Now, looking back, yah it's scary the :moneyflies: we've poured in but we're just thankful that we found good, young teachers to engage our young learners, but the interests & habit to learn is built & ingrained in my child. I'm happy that he's motivating himself to study for his exams & reading up loads to achieve his various projects. His eager-beaver, gogetting spirit is there. I don't need to beg or bark for himto get his butt moving.
I believe I t's really 欣慰 for any parents to know their kids hv self-motivation. I can't imagine if I had insists in personally coaching him & struggled thro the years with him, will I have turned him away from the pursuit of knowledge & interests in studying? Any tuition for sec? Only Chinese as he's doing HCL which I didn't allow during primary days to relieve that anxiety as he's less able then in this subject.
So every child wld hv differing needs at diff stages. Some kids hv blessings of grandparents to coach in Chinese language so cruise with HCL in primary sch w/o tuition. Some kids hv genius parent good with figures & hv no tuition for Math. Each family if diff with child's needs vs financial resources. For us, we're done with tuitioning & gonna save for our retirement & possibly holidays.[/quote]
