      Happy CNY 🙂

Guess everyone's busy during this period . That's why the thread is so quiet. ImMeeMee, I think my boy's class has 11 or 12 kids. Every week I noticed that he will bring back Maths, EL file for parents to sign and monitor. Some of my boy's worksheet are guided, so I assume he has some difficulties completing his work esp Maths in class. He has two topical tests already , both EL, one for Listening Compre and another for Show n Tell. Results are still considered ok but I worried about his Maths. He is relatively slower in grasping Maths concept.

His school teacher did provide me with some strategies to improve his independency in completing his work. I guess that's how they do it in school. Have a visual schedule to show what to do first then what is next. He is quite receptive and can see he is able to sit and do on his own a bit longer than usual. Maybe u can ask your daughter's teacher about it 🙂

My boy's class also has a reward system. Last week he got back a GOOD JOB tag and he's quite motivated. I believe every class has some kind of reward system to encourage better behavior . Can implement something similar at home so they can motivated at home as well. Of course, lots of work involved but I believe the hard work will pay off. 加油!!

      hi belanchanbabe

Fully understand your concern for your boy in mainstream. It's quite stressful for ASD kids to adapt to the environment. Maybe u can let your boy's teachers know and approach the Allied officer for special needs for help (there's one in every primary school ) If possible, talk to the P to see if your boy can be placed in the class of a teacher who has undergone training in special needs pupils (only some teachers undergone this course and they are more knowledgeable in terms of taking care of their needs), just some suggestions....
Have faith , some ASD kids can adapt very well after a few years in mainstream, although they faced teething problems when in lower pri. 🙂

On top of the usual worksheets , my boy also has journal writing on weekends. Ytd just received another notification, show and tell will commence next week. The maths teacher started on \"number bonds\" this week, and it's really a killer. I taught him til he cried ytd , and I am so guilty of that. Just don't know why he just cant grasp the concept. I guess got to go slower and be more patient with him 😞

ImMeeMee, may I know what do you mean by \"on-seat behavior\" ? Is it the ability to concentrate and stay focused for a period of time when doing work ? My boy also has spaced-out problem. Though he is sitting down but you know sometimes he is not focusing and listening to you. He also cant do his work independently, need me to be beside him to guide him. Trying to reduce his independence on me but somehow he just lack the self-confidence and needs my affirmation before he write his answers. Any advice on how to help him ?

I have a schedule drawn up for him on weekdays. But still, need me to nag before he will do his homework. His best motivator is \"can play computer for 20 minutes\" after he complete his work. After he done his work, he will be awarded a \"shooting star\" tag and that's his pass for playing computer. This works quite well for him, at least he will sit down and do his work 🙂

Just some sharing of strategies, have a good weekends, folks. 🙂

      hi all

It's around 2 weeks since school starts. There's homework for my son everyday. Sometimes it's 2 pages and sometimes more. Yesterday he has 2 pages of maths and 3 pages of English and there's spelling today. It's a bit stressful (to me I think, my boy quite bochap) and parents have to be on the ball cos there's message from teachers everyday wrt to money collection, signing of files, returning of library books etc.

However, I feel that PL is really supportive and geared towards learning for ASD kids. Their maths notes are really useful. They outline step by step to teach them maths concepts which may be too abstract for them to understand. Somehow my boy can do it after referring to the notes, but to master them must practise and practise until he got the hang of it.

To read and understand instructions is a major hurdle for my boy as sometimes the question will vary as to what they supposed to do. Any strategies to teach that besides practising every kind of questions?

Yesterday we got back the communication updates and have a better idea of the Maths and Eng syllabus outline for the past two weeks. They teach rather fast , almost finish unit 1 of Maths . English is based on stellar readers so difficult to know what vocab and grammar to focus on . Anyone can recommend good English assessment bk to teach grammar and vocab pit to P1 level but not too difficult please. Found a Maths assessment Learning Maths by SAP quite good, in line with Maths Textbook and not too difficult.

Looking fwd to more sharing by PL parents 🙂

      hi all

It has been a hectic week following school reopens. We braved ourselves for the school bus ride cos it's the first time our darling took school bus (had a bad experience when he's in presch , he ran away and refused to get on) . We stay in the West so it's die die must take schoolbus.

530am wake up call in the morning, practically the whole family woke up to fuss over him. Preparing him for bus ride , showing social stories, showing him pictures of his school (thks the trs for preparing the pictures of the different spots used in the orientation day). Finally the school bus came, luckily he's quite obliging that day. Then we zoomed off in our own car to his school and hid in the waiting area to see he's ok once out of bus. Everything's fine except our fren appeared very dazed and blurred as he's being ushered to the hall.

Then recess, again at the waiting area. PL is really very structured and organised. The trs led them down and surprisingly they r very orderly and doesnt seem like first day. We peeked from in between railings and very relieved that he is quite settled down. N then after that off they go like \"penguins\" following the sign to their class.

Very satisfied with PL for the easy transition. Ytd my boy got his first piece of homework . Just one page but his spelling list as well. 😞 It will be next week, even though i wish they could start later.

Think he's quite happy except for the early wake ups. Have a feeling the pace of teaching will be quite fast cos the calendar states that test will be end Feb. 😞
Hopefully he can find learning enjoyable minus the stress.

Thks ImMeeMee for the advice. Yes to b equipped with lifelong skills is the reason why I choose PL over mainstream school. PL teaches them skills to survive in the long run.

My boy also hasn’t master buttoning skills…somehow fine motor skills for them it’s a challenge. His cutting skills also not up to standard.

I’ve just browse thr his textbooks. That Learners bk on topical grammar exercises is very difficult

Now preparing him a bit on maths n grammar since he not gg sch in dec.
