• RE: Alternative School choices after trying mainstream school

Hi, any parents with children diagnosed with MID and in a Special education sch? I deferred my child for a year and she entered mainstream P1 when she is 8. However, she is not really coping very well and need a lot of guidance to be able to complete her homework. She is also in all the learning support programs & also remedial. I am considering to switch her to a sped sch so it will not be so tough for her. However i don’t know if it will be the right choice and I hope someone can share his/her experience with me.

      Thank you!

    • RE: Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)

Hi Esteema, did your boy feedback that Wang goes through the classes very fast? Because my girl told me the teacher will flash through all the words and when reading passages, her teacher also reads them very fast, so it is very hard for her to catch up. But anyway, I have already pulled her out and we have changed to another centre starting this week. Hopefully this time round it will work out better for her.

@Estéema , thanks for your suggestions.

The centres near my place are these popular few and so it happened that Wang was the only one with the slot that was suitable.
When I asked for Chinese enrichment centres, the first few ones that people recommend me are Wang/Berries/Tien Hsia… so naturally I will be more inclined to find out more…

For my child, I do not think is a problem of her not having interest or motivation. She self-studies and always prepares well for her ting xie, whether in school or tuition.
She has set expectations for herself & she knows she is weaker in Chinese, thus she agreed to go for enrichment.
Previously, she was in a normal, no brand centre & doing fine. But we shifted so we had to find a new centre. Maybe the teaching at Wang is too “dry” for her, as she doesn’t find the lessons engaging. She told me that they always have to do a lot of work with no breaks throughout the 3 hours. Most of the time, she was dismissed 30-45 minutes late because she has to finish the class work. Initially I was told it is to train them to write faster & they will be able to leave on the dot once they do so but to me, what’s the point?
If she was among the last 2-3 kids left rushing to finish the work, I don’t think it will be quality work.

I would say Wang is good, the notes are good. There are many success stories of children who improved tremendously after attending Wang.
But what is suitable for other kids may not work for mine.

Thanks for sharing, @manorway. It just validates my thoughts and I have made the decision to change her to another centre.

What online class do u recommend? I tried Lingoace before and I feel it is not effective. I still prefer face to face teaching.

    • RE: Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)

Hi all, my child is P5 and started attending Wang Laoshi this year. Her Chinese standard is average, around the 60s range. In Wang Laoshi she takes the 3 hourly class and I noticed that she becomes increasingly stressed and upset whenever she has to go for Chinese tuition.

I start to doubt myself if sending her to Wang was the right choice? Most of the time, she has to finish the class work before she can leave. So her 3 hour lesson can end as late as 45 mins later (not just her alone). By the end of the 3hr45mins, she came out of the centre looking terribly worn out and “half dead”. Throughout the span of almost 2 months, I have never seen her dismissed on time.

I understand Wang is well-known for their proven results and need a lot of parental support but seems like my child cannot adapt to it. The spelling words are tougher than school’s including the 默写 and if she doesn’t do well in the spelling, they were told that the teacher will call the parents. So she also struggles to learn the spelling and cries sometimes.

It seems like to be in Wang you have to be extremely hardworking and already have a good foundation, but with all the constant drilling and pushing, it just drives my child to dislike learning even more. She just keeps begging me to stop her classes or to even enrol her somewhere else.

I am thinking to change her to Berries. Has anyone been to both before and will Berries be less overwhelming for her? Or is there any other recommendations for Chinese enrichment in the west? I want my child to enjoy learning and not detest the language even more.

    • RE: Qifa Primary

Hi all, just wondering for those with kids going to Qifa in 2021, did you receive any letter yet? My child got into Qifa last year but we deferred her and although sch has confirmed a vacancy for her next year, i haven’t received any information yet.

    • RE: All about Transferring to Other Primary Schools

Thank you! Because we can only move in around March next year. So I need to consider the logistics as well for the 6 months. New school is about 20-30 mins drive away. But i guess i have no choice but to grab now right.

    • RE: All about Transferring to Other Primary Schools

I submitted my application to transfer my child (P3 this year) to another school nearer to my new house in year 2020.

Today, the school called and told me that there is a vacancy for her and she needs to start in Term 4 (after Sep school holidays). They can’t wait until next year because by end of this year, they need to release the vacancies to MOE and by then I may not be able to get the school, so they are offering me the vacancy now.

I’m quite worried about her starting at Term 4 cos it’s neither here nor there… and we only have that 1 week sch holiday to prepare new school stuffs. Also, not sure if she can cope with new environment and teachers together with the year end exams. Anybody has similar experience?

    • RE: All About (Global) Development Delays

Hi Grace! My child is due for P1 next year, but due to her overall delays and after seeking advice from teachers, therapists and her doctor, we have made the decision to defer her for a year. In the next one year, I will send her for private intervention on a daily basis where they will continue her therapies and academic and prepare her for primary school in 2021. It is was a tough decision to make but i think i truly believe she needs this extra time to be ready.

I went through some emotional struggle too but at the end of the day, i tell myself this is for the best of my child rather than her losing confidence and self-esteem each day when she cannot cope in P1.

I wish you all the best and feel free to PM me if you need to chat!

I am looking for play dates for my child as the therapist has suggested that i let her interact with other children who have the same issues as her, as she has difficulty keeping up with her friends and sometimes they are too advanced and she loses her confidence to speak (cos she know she isn’t as good as the rest). If any parents are keen, please PM me and we can arrange a playdate!

    • RE: P1 Deferment

I have received MOE's reply as follows:
Upon receiving completed documentation, CEU will be able to process your deferment application within a month and result will be notify via post mail to parents.

It is advisable that you proceed to participate in the P1 registration exercise for your child this year first. When your deferment application is approve, you can take the deferment approval letter to the successful registered school to let them acknowledge and issue a confirmation letter for your child's entry into P1 at their school in year 2021.

Do note that you may only participate in the P1 registration exercise once and your child will need to report back to the successful registered school first regardless of whether the school is your first choice.
Therefore, I think generally the Pri school will \"reserve\" the vacancy for my child if she defers and she will report straight to the pri sch the following year.
