Really, my parents didn’t even know what the GEP was until I got in (the yellow envelope). Isn’t it just a little bit too early to be worrying about PSLE? I know I’m nowhere near qualified to give parenting advice, and I’m sorry if I come off as rude or nosy, but when I was in P2 I appreciated the fact that I got the chance to live my childhood.

Just my take, as a former GEPer. Am now a year 2 student in RGS.

Also, I hated reading newspaper articles, my parents used to force me to read an English and Chinese article each every day. Maybe if you read with them, it would work, but for me, it was homework in a foreign language. Horrible.

I liked The Learning Lab for English and Mathematics, very useful albeit expensive. Not sure how well they teach Chinese though. I personally didn't take up Chinese tuition.

Am currently a 14-year-old, aiming to get into Oxford University. Aside from studying, I'm looking for extra-curricular activities to build up my CV. So far, due to my age, I'm unable to take up many suggested activities (join an orchestra, take up a language, etc.) I was wondering what activities I could do that is appropriate for my age group?

Wow.... This is really quite different from the amount I see in my school. I get $35 a week, solely for food alone, but I usually put $10 in my savings first. My parents don't know about this My allowance is going to get slashed by $10 a week though, to pay for taking up piano (a bargaining tool to get them to consent)


I'm one of the worst \"paid\" in my class, typically my classmates get something like $60 a week (this particular friend lives in a bungalow, to give you some context). However another friend (who is under financial assistance) still gets allowance ranging from $35 to $50.

Originally wanted to come here to site evidence as to why I don't get enough allowance, looks like that backfired :oops: :oops:

However in my school we all stay back until 6pm or later almost every day thanks to CCA....

(Nah, I just wanted to take up Ballet because another art would look good on my CV. Piano's what's more important to me; if I could only reach grade 4/5 Ballet I would be perfectly fine with it.)

Couple of a quick questions:

How many different types of examinations are there? I know about theory and practical, and apparently I can drop theory after g5, and still be able to do a diploma in piano? Other than those two, there are no other types... Right?

Also, does a diploma take especially long to get? Eg, if I take one year to get from grade 7 to grade 8, would it be the same for g8 to diploma or would it take substantially longer to get than to progress from grade to grade?

On another note, what types of gradings are there? I know about the conventional grade 1 - grade 8, but what’s this about "intermediate foundation"? Do teachers usually teach the two syllabi simultaneously? Also, what’s the difference between the two?

are you referring to Primary 3 GEP Screening Test papers (Round 1 and Round 2), starting in July, each year ?

Or are you referring to (P4 to P6) GEP classroom exercises done within the class / GEP Test / Exam papers ?

Seriously, the exam papers are confidential. You can't actually get them on the market. Being from the GEP I can tell you it's essentially the same as mainstream papers, with the exception of math investigation papers --- that would be pre-algebra.

That paper is kept strictly confidential and even parents can't see it. It's something like an IQ test, judging your ability to see patterns (similar to GAT test during selection.) So if students got in legitimately, by which I mean without training, it should be easy to get full marks for that paper.

Other than that, don't expect that much of a difference. Worry more about your portfolio and projects, which should be a new thing for you.


EDIT: If you're talking about the selection tests, then here. For the screening test they test orthodox classroom knowledge like in a normal exam. For the selection test, however, it goes something like this.

English: They test things like SAT words, and it's difficult to the extreme. I'm guessing they don't expect you to know the words, they just want you to be able to deduce the meaning from the question and context clues.

Math: Just... I don't know. You'll get questions for which you won't even understand but that's normal, just check to make sure the questions you do know are answered correctly.

The GAT is an IQ test, just renamed so as not to draw flak from the public.

It is less common for students to start classical piano at your age, but by no means it is too late.

I myself started learning piano at 17 from scratch. By 18 I cleared my grade 5 ABRSM, grade 7 ABRSM at 19, and finally cleared my grade 8 at 21 and entered NAFA full time performing course. And now I am a full time piano teacher. But back then my finance was tight and I had to make do with very little lessons, so I had a lot of deficiencies and that slowed me down considerably in my post grade-8. Passing grade 8 is not really that hard, but doing well for it (merit/distinction) is completely at different level.

So if finance is not an issue for you so you can get a very good teacher right from the start and you can spare 1-3 hours a day to practice minimum, I think it is entirely possible to clear grade 8 well within 3-4 years from the start. For my own teaching practice, I do have a few older starters. I have a male student who started as complete beginner when he was 30 years old (with some worship guitar background) and managed to pass grade 5 with distinction just slightly one year after starting lessons with me. Of course he worked hard for it clocking an average of 1 1/2 to 2 hours of practice a day; does not matter what age you start, the hours have to be put in. And in terms of playing standard, he's comparable to my more precocious students. So really, there's no reason why you shouldn't start.

I believe your experience is a unique one and not a suitable indication of how a typical older learner will progress. I highly doubt a normal average student will be able to pass the grades with minimum guidance in that short amount of time. So the only explanation is you are so inherently gifted that you can figure out a lot of things by yourself. I know you are just trying to encourage but realistically I feel your experience will be extremely hard to replicate by others.[/quote]
Okay, I realize that that may not be the most realistic expectation of my own piano learning, but how would an average person do? I believe I could do slightly better than that --as I am an above average student and learn relatively fast-- but I know that I am by no means a musical prodigy. I'm more like tone deaf.

Also, dream Aurora, it's probably bad that I get so easily swayed, but is it possible that you pm me the details of your classes, as well as admin stuff like cost, class size, etc? I'm interested to learn from you... Well, if you're willing to take me as a student that is. :oops:
