    • RE: All About Piano Theory Examinations

      Hi everyone,

Here are the notes that I used to help me get a 71/75 (Distinction) for the ABRSM Grade 5 Theory exam!

I recommend that you don't memorise all the terms as it's only a small portion and we only have a certain amount of time in our lives each day. Also, the practice papers from ABRSM are really helpful, but you have to pay for it.

Also, don't bother taking the lower grades, waste of money in my opinion. With practice, Grade 5 isn't that hard.

Wow. My thoughts on chess have been romanticised by my favourite show, The Queen's Gambit. Is chess still popular in Singapore?
It has been popular but not as popular as last November. The hype is slowly dying down.

    • RE: All About Weiqi and Chess

      Hi all,

I am currently a student of both SCF and PowerChess Asia so let me comment some of my thoughts on both of these academies.

      1. PowerChess Asia
Only come here if your child wants to be a competitive player or play chess seriously. From my experience, there is only one really good coach. Mr Samuel is just there to be the manager, try not to get him to coach your children. The lady coach is good but she hasn’t really coached me so I can’t give any comments on her. The GM coach is reserved for older children and more advanced children. All the top players in Singapore come to PowerChess to be coached by this GM. Apparentely, he is good friends with GM Kevin Goh Wei Ming so he has a good reputation. From my experience, complete beginners are coached by Mr Samuel, younger children who know the rules are taught by the lady coach and the GM teaches competitive players and maybe more advanced older children. In conclusion, this is place has the best chess coach in Singapore. This is based off the opinions of my chess friends too.

      2. SCF
Although SCF does not have as good coaches as those in PowerChess, it does have a really good programme for players with potential, such as the National Junior Squad. The National Junior Development Squad (NJDS) is for lower ranked players, followed by the National Junior High Performance Intermediate Squad (HPI), and the National Junior High Performance Squad (HP) is for the top junior players in Singapore. The HPI and HP games are FIDE rated so this is an amazing opportunity to get a FIDE rating for your children. Some of you have had problems contacting SCF but I didn’t have such a big problem. I can’t say much on the courses for beginners since I have never attended them.

Hopefully this has helped everyone. If you need more info, feel free to PM me.
