• RE: PSLE - New Format for Maths

This year’s PSLE maths was tough because last year’s was too easy. It was so easy last year that a lot of students completed the questions 10 to 15 mins before the time was up.

Many scored 100% or close to 100%. Some get 1 or 2 wrongs and were already upset as they felt they might not get A* already. Most of them still get A* anyway.

no worry, it won't. as i had extracted and posted out the MOE official reply to a strait times' letter which was written in 2007.

but, if using algebra to solve, partial marks will not be given if the final answer is wrong, unlike models, a straight zero.
(off course , this is not from MOE reply, it is from my daughter's past experience of school exam papers).

Yes I have noticed that primary school teachers have given zero marks to students who solved using the algebra method correctly for one of the unknowns (e.g., number of boys) when the question asked for the number of girls.

I think someone should ask MOE to make it clear whether forming the algebric statements should be allocated marks.

If indeed using algebra means getting Zero marks or full marks, there maybe a clear discrimination against the algrebric method.
I believe marks will be given if the workings are shown clearly in algebra.

For example, you need to first define what G stands for. G will stand for no of girls etc. and B to stand for no. of boys.

Then if you get the number of boys correct, you should be given some marks.

Some of the students are trained in maths olympiads. These kind of questions were not too difficult for them. Believe it or not, there were some students who complete the maths paper 2 in just 40 mins and have nothing to do after that.

Geometry questions: Look out for equal lines (common sense)

Speed question: Maths olympiad style (Some students can solve it in under 5 mins, believe it or not)

balloon question: Test on LCM. Almost every year, a question like this(LCM or HCF) came up.

computer question: Very obviously 25mins (so short) cant be the answer right? Just think more and one should realise the time played is 100 mins each.

cookies, curry puff: Well, these kind of questions also came up in psle last year.

      Hi

Can i check with you , is there any other information given besides the diagram?thanks

      Secondary school method lol.

Angle at centre = 2 angle at circumference.

      60 / 2 = 30 degrees

      Opposite angle of cyclic quad
      180 - 30 = 150 degrees.
The Speed question (if my DD remembered correctly):

Mei and Lin take part in a cycling race.
Mei's speed is 20km/h. When Lin travelled half of the distance, Mei was 3.5km in front of her.
Mei reached finishing line at 10.45am.
What time did Lin reach the finishing line?

Similar feedback - paper was tough, finished all but not a lot of time left to check through. Anyway, its over now, just move on and focus on next few papers.

So take the total distance to be 2 units.
When Mei travels 1 unit + 3.5km, lim would have travelled 1 unit.
When Mei travels 2 units + 7km, lim would have travelled 2 units. (just finished the race).

So Mei needs to overshot by 7km.

      Time = Distance/Speed = 7/20 hours = 7/20 x 60 = 21 minutes.

Lim needs to run 21 mins more.

      10.45 + 16 mins = 11.06am

Personally I still find this question 'unanswerable'.. Lim's speed is definitely slower than Mei's speed. So with the Lim's speed left unknown, how to know when Lim will finish the race? The 21mins is the time for Mei to cover the 7km with speed of 20km/h. So Lim will definitely take more than that. Any smart brains to help me clearing my doubts? :)
For this question, you have to make one assumption and that is both start off the race at the same start line and at the same time.

Hmmm, in the past, PSLE exams were straight forward and all doubts are cleared before they approved the questions to be set. Now, the questions are deliberately set to make the students think hard.

My friend's son was rejected by DHS, he was so upset. He though it is because of GAT, he said how could a school based on GAT to rejected him. (His school result is really not that good 65% average) I have to be cruel to tell him, it is not only GAT, he has to work hard for his PSLE.

Why he thinks it is GAT failed him ? His cousin also rejected few years back, and he was told he failed GAT. I don know the school had simply gave him a reason or it is true. It sent the wrong information to these kids.

      :?
65% is considered bad. Even 85% average for all the subjects may not be good enough.

I also panic when i took my Maths C paper. I didnt even study on hindsight. All my teachers were saying that we must get A for it. I was an F maths student and i didnt even bother to study for Maths C.

And oh my gosh the exam was harder than i imagine. Luckily i scored an A 😄
here's de question for sweets and chocolate

Jane bought a packet of sweet and gave half to Sunny.
Sunny boiught a packet of chocolate and gave half to Jane.
Jane ate 12 chocolates, and Sunny ate 48 sweets. How many sweets did Jane buy?

This can't be the question. Not enough information

According to my son, this is Q18 of Paper 2 (last question). The question is correct except for the names of the children (which of course is not important for calculation purposes). No other additional information was given.

My son's answer was 68. He used algebra to form an equation, but maybe it can be done by other methods. (Sorry, I can't explain more clearly as I didn't fully understand what my son said  )

Can Vanilla Cake help? Thanks. :D
Jane bought a packet of sweet and gave half to Sunny.
