Surprising to see how some traditionally popular JCs have dropped to lower tiers.

I read some posts earlier suggesting that if given a choice to choose between Crescent Girls School or CCH then one should opt for CGS.


I guess many parents are like me whom still think that JCs ranking remain status quo from 20+ years ago. I just researched and found out that NYJC is actually ranked 3rd nowadays, just behind RJC and HC.
NYJC is ranked ahead of VJC, NJC and TJC !

Hence by going to CCH, you are affiliated with the #3 Rank JC in Singapore. Times have changed and so have rankings for the JCs.
Do your homework, check and consider wisely.

Hi autolycus and Esteema, we stay near Tai Seng area hence MRT would be an obvious choice.

DS likes ACSI and a couple of other schools. We are doing some ground work first so that when the PSLE results are out, we would already have in mind what the potential choices could be.

b) What is the most convenient way to go there besides taking car?
c) How long does it take to walk by MRT from Dover or Buona Vista or One-North stations?
d) Is there a bus they can take from the MRT stations in above?

I would think that the Singapore educational system is moving away from churning out hardcore academics now. That said, it is also likely that muggers with intensive tuition may not excel in today's multi-faceted education.


The so-called good schools are looking beyond just good grades, they want students with that additional edge from other talents too.
Geppers may not have advantage during DSA exercise, unless they have something extra to offer the schools. After all if good grades are what they can offer, then PSLE T-scores would be their best chance to shine.

Based on the communication between D David and Minister Ong, I can't help but think that there is increasing emphasis for a well-rounded sportsperson/performing artist with good citizen character values. While grades are important they are not the be-all and end-all of a child's holistic education.

While RGS is a reputable school, I doubt it will attract 30% of the female cohort.

There are other established schools like NYGS, St Nicks, MGS, Cedar, SCGS etc. Don’t forget that there are also other co-ed institutions like NJC, Dunman, RVHS…
In fact it might be a risk to opt RGS as one of the 3 options if the DD is not even remotely talented in any of the 21 domains.
Advise to weigh your strengths and select your 3 choices carefully.

With the easing of certain CB measures, we should see renewed interests in this forum.

BTW, I also heard that River Valley High will be conducting a virtual open house on 25th April 2020.


Over the past week many of my friends with P6 children shared how this COVID-19 pandemic had already stolen opportunities away from their kids to shine in the NSG, SYF, Time Trials etc. It is almost unimaginable to even think of denying them DSA opportunities. Some mentioned that their kids might totally give up on talents which they spent years honing. Who knows we might even miss out on some great talents in the sports, performing arts or other arena.
It is possible that subsequent batch of students may also take future DSA lightly with pinch of salt. Coaches, trainers, instructors etc. would also like notice less commitment from their students.
Wasn’t DSA setup with the intention to let students "demonstrate a more diverse range of achievements and talents in seeking admission to secondary schools"?

Furthermore it was stated by MOE that "The Direct School Admission (DSA) Exercise aims to promote holistic education by giving participating schools greater flexibility in selecting students…"

Therefore MOE should let schools have more freedom to decide how they run the DSA 2020.

Cancellation of Open House does not equate to abolishment of DSA exercise. In fact many of the DSA hopefuls would have been to such Open Houses previously and know exactly which schools they are targeting to apply for next year.

In line with the nation to curb the spread of Covid-19, it is understandable that schools will cancel Open Houses originally scheduled at around this period.
In most situations, students with strong cases to DSA would already have illustrated that pedigrees in past years’ competitions and in some cases this year’s too in 2020, just before the disruption caused by Covid-19.

It is too pessimistic to infer that cancellation of Open House means scrapping of DSA. It would be far too myopic for MOE to do just that.
While the letter from MGS states that Open House is cancelled but it also says that "…DSA selection will include looking at the potential and experiences of the child…"
MGS has a wide selection of DSA categories including English, STEM, Music , Dance and Sports. Surely they can spot the talents of these DSA hopefuls besides NSG and SYF accomplishments.

As DSA involves some form of interviews and selection trials for certain sports, it is only normal for MOE to say that they are monitoring the situation. Like someone suggested in this thread earlier, the interviews might have to be tweaked and conducted differently.

In the case of MGS, they are an Independent School. Autonomous and Independent schools should be able to exercise their own rights to recruit students whom they believe have potentials.
I don’t see why DSA exercise would be cancelled but rather how schools will decide on the selection criteria.
