Hi Bonbon12, sorry for checking in late. My memory of P1 orientation is nil coz it was my hubby who attended. I asked around and it seems like the students will be separated into their respective classes and get to meet their classmates and form teachers while parents attend talks in the school hall. It shld be a nice and helpful orientation and try to assure your child that things will be fine. He will grow up into a big boy in this school and many happy memories will be made here Welcome to the Guangyang Family!

RE: Guangyang Primary
Higher Chinese is offered from P1 in GYPS
At p5 it is offered to students who show aptitude or their parents can opt in for their kids to try. By p6, it is up to school discretion to decide, esp for students who are not doing well at p5. -

Hello kikimama, yes you're right, I was worried it's due to poor quality of teachers or teaching materials.. is it cos the school does not motivate or push students to do well.
If your only concern is the low takeup rate - what are your underlying worries to that? Quality of teachers?kikimama:
Thanks floppy. My son is learning violin now and I saw on their website that GY has a strings ensemble. I thought it is good to have a cca that he will enjoy. During the open house I saw the school is spacious and relatively new, a number of nationalities there too.
I am still trying to decide if I should try for GY. We are in phase 2C. I believe in co-ed schools, a well rounded and positive environment. I kept feeling I am right when every kan cheong parent is running for ATS, CHS, KCPS, but when I saw the statistics of the low take up rate online, my heart just sank. I kept wondering if it's just an over emphasis on grades and therefore parents don't choose GY or something else that's wrong.. from the comments here, it seems that GY is a nice school.
But I'm vencouraged by what you've shared. I believe grades matter but they are not everything. Character, cca, diversity are very important too. In fact I would be concerned if all a school cares about are only grades.
As far as I'm concerned, teachers my daughters have are fantastic. Some of them are really on the ball, make and compile their own study notes for students (i call them the \"holy bible\"), voluntarily pull students aside for extra clarifications etc. They take a lot of pride in their job. In fact, i may even boldly suggest they teach more here than telling parents of lagging students to seek external resources to catch up.
This happened to a friend of mine whose boy is in a SAP boys school. But then again, these are just my experience and i hope they help you in some way or another. -

Perhaps a glimpse through photos of what the students do in school might help you in some ways:

RE: Guangyang Primary
What is considered average?
I think like what floppy has explained very clearly, it is just unfortunate we are nestled in a neighbourhood with so many big guns. While my experiences here are mainly positive, I’m sure there are some who have negative ones and wished they were somewhere else. And this would be the same scenario across all schools in SG. No one can have the same experience. But its up to us how we want to shape and receive the experiences.
PSLE scores are kept hush. Heard that the last cohort did really well. But what is considered “well” is different for everyone.
What is different here is the diversity in the students. That is what I love here. This diversity also means that competition is probably not as cut throat as the other popular schools. The teachers we have encountered are great too. I have made great friends with mummies of different nationalities who are selfless and always ready to lend a helping hand no matter what time it is.
However, these are all my unique experiences. So I can’t guaranteed you will have it the same way as me. -

RE: Guangyang Primary
Hi there, my child is in P5 now. She has many opportunities to be groomed in school. We are not hung up on grades (though i used to be,haha)
School is strong on character building and i find the teachers always seek ways to improve kids learning experience in school.
What i love is opportunities in GYPS are not limited to certain batch of students who are more academically inclined or student leaders. Like their school ambassador program, any students with potential will be handpicked to be groomed as a school ambassador where they will have many avenues to showcase their training- bringing VIP around during open house or on stage as emcees.
We have students of different nationalities and students’ exposure is not limited to just local Singaporeans or certain ethnic groups. This is very valuable for our kids to grow a global and inclusive mindset. Our PSG is very dedicated too and recently started Mother Tongue storytelling (on top of our regular English storytelling) during lower primary recess. Students of various ethnicities and nationalities would sit in and even try to participate even if its not their Mother Tongue language. This is very endearing.
Do join us for our 100th yr anniversary Open House. Its a huge event that’s tied up with PA and Mr Chong Kee Hiong will also grace our event:)
Hope you will join our GYPS family! -

i am torn between Farrer park primary and guangyang primary for my boy. any thoughts on which is a more nurturing and well rounded school? thanks!
Perhaps a school tour and talking to school personnels might give you a better comparison? Distance is equally important too.
Personally, gyps is a good fit for my girl in all aspects. She is a dreamy girl since young but her P1 teacher saw her potential and gave her plenty of opportunity to be groomed as a leader. I can see her blossoming into a confident young lady, more in charge of her work and less dreamy over the years. She is now in P3.
Hope you can find what fits your child. -

Thank applemum for your reply. since there so few classes, will there be Streaming in P3 and P4? Would be great if someone can help advise on how the School is preparing the kids academically for Psle, or how have the recent batches did for Psle?
Gyps tend to have smaller cohort compared to neighbouring schools. Streaming is done twice - once at p2 to stream into p3, another at p4 to stream into p5
My dd is in p3, teachers are great and i believe the school will prepare her adequately for psle. If anything, the teachers here are more used to slower students and tend to provide more support. Parents who can give good learning support at home would help tremendously.
School n teachers tend to be quite tight lipped about psle results, so i can't tell you how the different batches have performed.
Being a smaller school also means more learning opportunities for every student, especially leadership roles. That's one lifelong skills to acquire which you can't learn from books but by experience. -
