    • RE: KTKLN for indo maid?

I have brought my ex-Indo Helper in and out of Malaysia quite frequently and only WP & passport are needed. If more than 7 consecutive days, you can claim for worker's levy online.

May i know if i wish to bring my Indo maid with me when i travel to Msia... can that be done without any 'special pass'?

I brought my maid to Genting before. No special pass required. Just remember to bring her original workpermit along.

    • RE: GEP 2013 - Class Starting P4 in 2014

RECMEL is an external training agency that conducts math enrichment classes, usually 10 sessions. Either during school holidays (intensive) or once every week.

These classes are for kids who are mathematically inclined and prepares/exposes them to questions commonly tested in Math Olympiads. It will be helpful either directly or indirectly for PSLE : ) and exposures to solving techniques are definitely helpful in expanding their problem solving skills for other math competitions.

In TNS, the kids can part in many competitions like NMOS (P5), ACS Mathlympics (for P5, but selected P4 get to participate), SMOPS (P6). If results of SMOPS are good, kids can use for DSA.

    • RE: Opting out of GEP screening

Being placed in the GEP program does not guarantee that the child scores well in the PSLE in terms of T Score. Generally they do, but there will always be some who do not. Being in the program only means to stretch the child in terms of his gifted abilities & subjects. There are many factors that lead to the T score of each child at Pri. 6.

Those in the mainstream in fact are also very motivated to do well and they are also placed in the school’s in house talent development programs or under their own parents’ programs. Therefore, it is no surprise that other kids can do better and some GEP kids fare less well.

When the GEP results are out,

First round, to sit or not to sit

Can consult the teacher for advice

If your child struggles with school work and failing/ doing badly in his subjects and you feel that he is among the weaker group, then you can choose not to let him take.

Otherwise, in all cases, should always ask him to try

      First round, not selected
No problem. It means your child is in the right place, right for the mainstream curricula. Your child will not feel disappointed unless you placed high expectations on the outcome by overly preparing him. Otherwise, the child most likely cannot feel anything. It’s just another day to day test.

Don’t feel too disappointed as he could be among the borderline group of 4001th not being selected. If you know your child’s ability well, just have to accept it turn out this way.

      First round, selected.
It means your child is among the top 4000 performing well for the selection test in that concort. As parents, we like to interpret as the child being capable of doing well academically subsequently as this is a national testing.

      Second round, out
Don’t feel bad as there are as many as 3500 children like yours, who were not being selected. At least you know he is among top 4000.

      Second round, selected
It means your child is among the top 500 in the cohort. Congrats!

      ilovelaksa:
Hi, we opt out of GEP screening for all our children, cos we prefer to stay put at our nb sch.

Logistically, it wld hv bn a nightmare for us if any of our kids is offered.
There are not always many national standardized tests and exams in the nation. Unless, you think that you are looking at a holistic education and so do not want to stress your child out of all these, then it is fine.
But if you think of it in a positive way, it is a standardized assessment for you to know your child's ability. Isn't that a good deal? It is free!

Supposing there is a free IQ test assessment. Will you let your child take it?

It is not that difficult to opt out of the program (when you clearly know that you want him/ her to stay in nb schools) as the choice is still yours, even if your child is being offered.

    • RE: Gep has any play time?

If your child is coping well in the system, he will be able to find time to do other things like play, sports and sleep.

In fact, my son is doing a lot more of the above as compared to studying and revising at home. I believe 80% learning has taken place in the classroom and so examinations and tests are just a mere transfer of knowledge. There is a shift of mindset on my part to move away from heavy last minute preparations and you can still see his good results showing up.

If you are anxious and gave him many other enrichment classes, that’s where he cannot find time and space for himself.

    • RE: Tao Nan School GEP

My son told me that he called everyone. Maybe, my son was wrong. Those parents who received calls really need the parents to give attention to the child’s science progress and learning. Should not get too overly anxious for not receiving calls, as supposedly when teachers call, it’s not too good. If the teacher deems that your child really needs your attention, he will get through you by hook or by crook (day and night).

It’s always better when we do not receive the calls. It’s a sign that your child is coping well enough in the system

    • RE: Tao Nan School GEP

These few days, you will see them bring back their files, especially over the weekends. The teachers do allow them to bring back to revise for the coming tests. This is the time when we really need to look closely and thoroughly at their work to know what they have learnt and have not learnt and check with them on their learning and understanding.

I believe you should have received phone calls from P4 Sci. Teacher who feedbacked on how to help the child.
