MOE requested for 2 email addresses and 2 phone numbers. The onus is on the parent to provide accurate info. I think MOE would also require a response from the parent to acknowledge the email. If all goes wrong, the sch will contact the parent, wouldn’t they?

My kid mentioned the examples section too. It’s curious isn’t it? It definitely helps kids who have never been exposed to GA questions before.

Why my som told me ytd english was harder than today’s math? His english is not that strong but sounds like he did quite bad on ytd’s paper….

He said today he not only finished all but got time to check. But i dont think he got chance as we nvr sent him for tuition since p1….:(

I think it depends on each individual when it comes to difficulty level for the various papers. My son's English is also not top notch but he reads widely (both fiction and non-fiction books). According to his feedback after 2 days, he ranked Maths paper as the easiest (it was easier than he expected), followed by GA 1 + GA 2 (both on par), then English paper last (but still manageable). He had time to check through all his papers, except GA 2 Part 2 (which they did today).

An interesting aspect for GEP testing that I didn't know prior to my son's experience is that he told me they were given sample/practice questions (\"examples\") to do before actually starting on the GA papers (for both days). And these \"examples\" also came with answers + explanations that the kids could refer to after attempting them. For e.g., 5mins would be allocated for attempting 7 \"examples\". And the kids are allowed to refer back to the \"examples\" & explanations when they come across similar type of questions while doing the actual GA papers.

Tough or not tough... it's up to the examiners. The only thing that matters now is... IT DOES NOT MATTER AT ALL WHETHER THE KID GETS INTO GEP!! What we should do is tell the kid how proud we are of them, that they were able to come so far, and they should now enjoy the holidays like they should.

      It’s finally over!!

My kid said compre was tough, GA (English) was ok and math was surprisingly ok. He referenced math GA questions to a series of books that I bought on a whim, and didn’t complete.

All the best to the kids who attempted this test. It’s not for the faint-hearted 😂

Oh dear… sorry to hear about this. Is it possible to for him to take mainstream CL if he gets into GEP?

My school did not do that either. A random teacher was sent to distribute the letters who asked some of the kids out of the classroom to give them a letter who simply told them to pass to their parents and not to show it to their friends.

I am not sure if it is just luck that my son was selected, as he is struggling a lot with Chinese. Even in the unlikely event that he will get selected a month later, I will not dare send him into GEP given that he cannot even pass Chinese. I am definitely going to drop HCL by P5 or the earliest I am allowed to drop it.

My child’s teacher distributed the letters exactly how it was described in the forum letter. Kid was aware that it made some kids feel really awful about themselves and I think the school or teacher could have handled it much better.

I get it if the school openly celebrates achievements of children who did well in competitions. It is something worthy of celebration and cheer. The notification for getting through round 1, conversely, doesn’t warrant any ra-ra.

Imagine if you were the parent of a child who didn’t get through despite best efforts. Or the kid him/herself? What’s the point of giving it out this way if it could have been avoided? A little social grace and discretion goes a long way.

Yes I agree that the % of students who got through round 1 would be the same year after year. MOE has a kpi to fulfil and is unlikely to deviate from it.

I think that it’s best to expose the child to a wide genre of literature and materials that stimulate critical thinking instead of sending him/her to a prep class. This allows the child to have an inquisitive mind in and out of school. Even if the child got into GEP on the account of being prepped, the ensuing 3 years could be difficult due to the intensity of the curriculum.

Like someone said, que sera sera. It’s good enough to know our kids are doing well academically but there’s so much more to life than grades.

I doubt it’s any more or less than last year. 10% of screened gets selection test and 10% get Invited for GEP. My kids class is the average class where 4/40 got thru next round

Thanks, revils-ling for the link. Some useful tips. I’m sure there are parents who will send their kids to such courses. But to all, please be mindful that if your kid’s “intelligence” is somehow inflated by extra coaching, may not benefit them eventually. There’s some risk they can’t appreciate / keep up with the GEP syllabus and get demotivated?

For sure. It makes me think about the demographics of kids who got into round 1 though.

Sounds like a substantial number of kids made it through round 1. Is this true across the board?

My kid is in a GEP school and even then, I’m surprised by the number going by MOE’s lines.

Wow. Is this a GEP sch too? As for the non-GEPers, were they streamed into a HA class?
