For outdoor shooting, I always use a polarizer filter. It will cut down down reflection on the subject (most obvious is from reflection of water and glass), and the blue sky will appear darker if you shoot in the direction of the sunlight.

Thanks longreach for the photo comparisons .. Both are with polarizer filters but diff directions? The effects are certainly not similar !
