6.\tLearn to ask for permission & practice the proper use of toilet independently

It may seem simple to ask to go to the toilet the first time, but when the request is rejected, he/she may not have the courage to ask again or tell the teacher that he/she really needs to go. That’s why it is important to build his/her self-confidence and teach them to request courteously, or how to inform the teacher of the urgency. With time, children will learn to use the toilet before lessons, so that they don’t miss out on the learning during class.

7.\tHygiene Habits
The occasional toilet visits, changing for PE lessons or CCAs etc. are times where she would have to learn to clean herself, pack her clothes properly, wash her hands thoroughly etc.

4.\tTelling Time

Recognising time on digital & analog face. After teaching the child to read time, also need to teach the child to prioritize and have the sense of urgency in his/her daily routine.

5.\tOrganizing and Packing
While losing stationeries can be inexpensive, it can be inconvenient. Worse is she loses important forms and letters from the school. Yes, please do expect many letters informing parents of activities, payments, outings, etc. Delegate packing & checking duty to the child but do ask them if the necessary items are packed (water bottle, wallet/coin pouch, jacket, tissues, etc)
Teach the child how to organize her stationeries, her books and files etc.

3.\tCarrying her own food

The canteen is one of the most stressful places your child will go to and usually it will be chaotic. He/She will have to learn to queue up, wait for his/her turn, order his/her food, get the right change, keep the money well and then meander through the crowd to find a seat with his/her friends to eat the food…. All within about 20-30 mins. The child probably only have like 15mins to finish his/her food as the other 15mins is use to queue, find seat & going to toilet. Ohh ya… proper disposal of their used plates and cutleries after eating too.
At the stalls which you frequent, you can have him/her to carry his/her own portion of food. With parents next to him/her telling the child to focus, choose his/her path carefully, hold the tray/food firmly. We also kept reminding him/her to eat quickly and talk after the meal completed.

Let me share with I have gathered 2 years back to prepare my #1 for P1 then and also my #2 this year as he's gg to be P1 next year... Bear with me on the long list... :evil:


1.\tMoney sense
Recognise notes (start with $2 only) & coins using the real money after sanitising all coins & notes and how much change to expect after making payment?

2.\tPractice buying their own stuff (and the use of a wallet/coin pouch)
Build confidence and learning from mistakes. Start encourage the child to make his/her own order (highlight any special request like which item that he/she doesn’t want, in future after trying the food), take $ from wallet and keep the change (if any) before taking the ordered food.

Would like to get something with more support for my son...[/quote]If you don't buy from school, you can get those from Bata... as long as it is plain black/white shoes... Suggestion: don't get too expensive ones, especially for boys... heard a lot from my friends that their son's shoes can last for like only 3 months and need to change liao cos damaged... good times, lasted 6 months... :slapshead: so end up, they buy from taobao... cheap cheap... Also, check if you can let your child wear those white socks with black/grey/navy base... easier to wash...

Do check what the school practise… some sch is does what we did in the past where there is a separate set of PE attire (diff top & bottom)… whereas, some sch like my DD’s where their PE attire is just a diff of a bottom which is an elastic waist band shorts… on days where they have PE class, pupils will directly wear the same uniform top + that elastic waist band shorts… normal days without PE class, pupils wear the same uniform top + their skorts/short with hook at waist… no changing of clothes during the day…

I do washing daily so I bought 3 uniform set (2 to rotate & 1 as backup)… 2 PE bottom (1 is good enough actually as they usually have 2 PE class per week, unless they have PE class on consecutive days which usually shouldn’t be the case la… and 1 as backup)…
Same goes for student care, see what they practise… usually it is just a uniform top to change into, bottom remains… and I stick to my usual in getting 3 top (2 to rotate & 1 as backup)…

Rem to get enough name tags for the school uniform top… for sch bottoms and student care top, I use back the normal iron-on stickers. And for sch bottoms, I put the iron-on stickers on the inner part of the fabric.

I wld encourage parents not just to attend sch P1 orientation & visit only bookshop.


Whilst u're there, spend some time walk ard sch compound & let yr young child get familiar with sch canteen, library, garden & playground. If u're applying for a specific sports, you might reccee the school's facilities such as the tennis court, sports field, music room, etc.

I don't do the abv and looking back, I thot this will help FTWP bcoz u can get into conversation after yr child starts sch next year. On Day 1 of school, my child was held back in a long queue during recess. I went round taking pics of the library & beautiful playground, etc. When DC returned fr sch, I showed all the pics & he was enticed by all the possible activities. Managed to get him to agree bring healthy sandwiches rather than queue for canteen food & spend time at other activities ard school more productively. Just sharing.

Great advice, thanks for sharing! It's my first time with a kid in Pri school so from what I understand, we are to bring our kids with us for orientation but it will be be a madhouse with parents and kids trying on school uniforms, etc. So if you know which uniform supplier is assigned to your child's school, you should make a separate trip down to try the uniforms instead of rushing on orientation day.

You can also bring a set of your child's clothes (which is the size of the school uniform you intend to buy) as a guide. Then need not waste time getting your child to try over the clothes that he/she is wearing on the spot...

They are in boys school...thats why headache for me very soon as my alumni school closed down already.

ohh... Then start planning & prepared for actions to be taken by next year...
1) MOE Kindergarten? - Phase 2A2
2) Parent Volunteer - Phase 2B
3) Church / Clan with direct connection - Phase 2B
4) Active Community Leader - Phase 2B

I know... might not be easy for you that you have to go into these route as you have 2 older ones to manage

Guess a lot of parents withdrawed from Fern Green

Anchor Green: 99 applicants for 101 places.
By the skin of your teeth.

I could have Phase 2A2 priority for Fern Green (but unlikely to take it up). Surprised that it's a popular option for a 2 year old school (240 / 300 at end of Phase 2C).

Likewise for Punggol Cove which is also a 2yo school... 280/320 at the end of phase 2C.... At now 2CS it's oversubscribed with 46 applicants for 42 slots and need to ballot . There was 40 slot left by the end of phase 2C but there was 2 withdrawal after 2C ends, hence the vacancies became 42. Yet this 2 withdrawal doesn't stop the balloting from happening.
