More like the pri school calendar...the term is longer than sec schools'

Is it exactly the same as primary school calendar. Would appreciate if you could share the calendar with me. I googled and couldn't find anything. Thanks!!

I don't understand, isn't school terms same for all primary and sec school?
https://www.moe.gov.sg/education/school-terms-and-holidays#pri-sec-sch-term-2017
I think there is a misunderstanding of secondary school term due to \"O\" level exam. Most secondary students who are not taking \"O\" level do no have to attend school during the \"O\" level exam period. So, this could give an impression that most secondary school started their school holiday earlier. In fact the actual school holiday is 19 Nov 2016, same as primary school. As NUSH does not have \"O\" level exam, therefore its holiday start on 19 Nov 2016. I was confused last time why NUSH always has their end term school holiday later than other secondary school, but now I know all secondary school has the same end term school holiday.

Hmm...3.5 is a B. Most get min B+ while A- and A are more common.

Not to depress anyone but for Year 1, a B is quite \"dangerous\" as the syllabus will get harder and harder as the years go by. šŸ˜“

what if for Year 1 :
child get B for Maths, B for Physics, A for Chem, B for Bio -
risky ?

do NUS High \"kick out\" any student, before ?

Not that I know of. šŸ˜‰
B is 3.5 CAP. So far I know there are students who are around 3.0 (B-) CAP and they are still promoted to the next year. Though, I understand they attend remedial classes for subjects they are weak in. The minimum CAP for year 1 to get promoted to year 2 is 2.5 CAP. You can download a pdf on this at

http://www.nushigh.edu.sg/qql/slot/u186 ... .01.02.pdf

Refer to the last 2 pages.

• RE: All About T-Score

clob1997:
I was using the 3rd language (French/German...) to determine this year's top 10% (which can be closely correlated to the lower tier IP Schools COP) earlier. This year 3rd language was offered to 253+0 but not 251+0.

I am not sure exactly where the cut off is as I know one 252+0 wasn't offered but somewhere in the forum someone feedback that 252+2 was offered. Possibly the cut off is above 252 but lesser than 253

Looking at the current IP COP for CHS & TJC (http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum ... 48&t=84817), they are both 253. So using the 3rd language to gauge the top 10% is quite accurate.

And the top 10% t-score is never the same every year due to the distribution shape changes, depending on the difficulties of the papers. T-score is merely trying to force the distribution to be a normal bell curve but in reality, the curve can be skewed, causing changes to the t-score. It can be bloated a bit at the tails or taper off thinner from year to year. This will cause the top whatever % t-score to change.
Agreed.

Just don't understand how come some people can post their assumed \"correct\" interpretation of tscore without verifying it first. Hope that version of tscore is not distributed and worst of all, he is called t-score and the account is just created recently to post his tscore interpretation ! šŸ˜“

t-score:

MOE website says only the top 1/3 of students who opt for ind school for all independent schools r offered. We know some ind school are affiliate and thus their results may not be even in top 10% eg. ACS (i) and SJI. Also some top 1/3 student may not opt for independent school. So I am sure the t-score who r offered ind sch scholarship is not representative of the top 1/3 of each cohort.
There are many discussion in this forum on why we guess those who offered EESIS scholarship are in the top 3% of the cohort. Here is a link on a very good explanation: http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum ... 9&start=20

Thanks.

• RE: All About T-Score

t-score:
Psle t score.

Alamak until now pple still confuse about t score. The t score is basically a rank score of where your result stand compare to others. If u hv 50 it means u hit the average score of the cohort. If you got 60 it means 15.9 per cent of the students did better than u n if you got 70 it means 2.3 per cent did better than u. If you got 80, it means 0.1 per cent did better than u!!! And every year it is the same! So assuming students ability r the same for all 4 subjects, if u got 280 it means 2.3 percent did better than u! That is why govt say 200 is the average score. But remember this is a rank score, not your ability of the subject. Moe hv set paper so that student has the ability to get a C meaning credible understanding by world std. That is why even student with less than 200 t score, they know their subject well n hence our student did very well in international bench marking. So look at the grades n be concern if it is not a C, it means the kid may not hv a good understanding of the subject. Then better brush up before going to secondary school. Dont forget at the end of the day we r competing against the world, not ourselves.

Since this topic is on top 10%, if the student get 62.7 it means 10% do better than him. Again assuming same std in all 4 subjects, if the student got 250.8, it means 10% do better. In other wordss top 10% score is >250.8, but that is assuming student is same std in all 4 subjects. But we know as a fact, not all top student (ie. top 10%) fair the same for all subjects, hence, every year the top 10% is for sure less than 250.8. That is why MOE says every year top 10% is about 250. For 2014 psle result, i had a friend who kid got 249 and receive MOE letter offering him 3rd language. So if MOE is correct, only top 10% would be offered, it means 249 may be the minimum. This website says 2014, top 10% score is 248, that may be true.

Also if your kid is top 10%, he/she will receive a MOE edusave scholarship of about $350. And yes, it goes to the kid edusave acct šŸ˜‰
Your explanation on tscore is not really correct. Other than the tscore is a ranking system which is correct, the rest are not fully correct. Read up on tscore calcuation here:

http://www.greatminds.edu.sg/index.php? ... &Itemid=91

Top 10% changes almost every year. And it is definitely not what you stated \"every year the top 10% is for sure less than 250.8\". There are years when top 10% is above 250, though in year 2014 it is less than 250. As MOE don't show us the raw score of all students and also they don't tell us the Std Deviation, there is no way to tell what is top 10% from the t-score itself, the best guess is look at the cut off point for 3rd language been offered (i.e. French/ German/ Japanese/ Spanish).

And your statement - \"Also if your kid is top 10%, he/she will receive a MOE edusave scholarship of about $350.\"
Which MOE edusave scholarship are you talking about ? Edusave Merit Bursaries, Good Progress Awards, EAGLES, EESIS or others ? They all have different requirements.

Just want to clear up the misinformation.

Thanks.

t-score:
Yes, the special ability moe did not say. So it may be a A* student for 3 subject but chinese is B, may not qualify. But then how many such students r there? anyway for p4 student to do higher chinese both english and chinese must be 80 and above hence, i guess the same std apply for 3rd lang.

\"Pupils who are ranked among the top 10% of the PSLE cohort and who have a special ability in languages are eligible to apply to study a foreign language (i.e. French/ German/ Japanese/ Spanish) from S1.\"

You must satisfy both criteria. Even if you have A* in both languages but is not in top 10%, you are not offered. Therefore, it is safe to say that whoever is offered the French/ German/ Japanese/ Spanish language is definitely in the top 10%.
