      Angelight:
Hi, need to check if costs for ONLY theory lessons vary from practical lessons?

If so, what's the rate for grade 5 theory only, no practical? And how long should it be, 45 mins or 1 hr?

      Appreciate your replies.
      I charge $165 for 45mins of 4 lessons.

Edvox is around this px from what I heard from my students who have came over from there? I may be out dated on the pxing.

    • RE: Piano too loud

If I didn’t recall wrongly, there is an official timing for such noises E.g instrument playing, mahjong, which is 11pm. Must double check on this. I usually advise my students to put cardboard stacks behind the piano. Cheaper too. So far no one complaint.

    • RE: Any recommendation for piano, violin and ballet lesson?

      Hi mumof3kids,

I know this is really late. But if you are still hanging around the forum, I’m willing to teach your eldest daughter at a fee that you are able to afford.

I understand parents who have financial difficulty and yet have children who are very keen to learn. I’m very willing to teach children who are willing to initiate the effort to learn. So if you are still there, do drop me a pm and I can let you on my teaching background etc. Please do not mind about the fees if your daughter interest is still there. As for your son, I’m sorry but I wouldn’t be able to help. . .

Btw, I’m located in Hougang area too.

Renner Music sells piano extenders. And I happen to be around the shop when someone was making the purchase, can’t recall the price that transacted between them though.

      What kind of cleaning chemicals?

I just use 3M cloth to polish. The wood these days seem different. Last time, my old old piano (when I was kid), I really use Lemon Pledge and it worked great. My piano now just use cloth and rub nice nice to a shine.

I leave my piano lid open, so always need to have 3M cloth to standby and wipe all the dust and \"oil\" off the keys. But then having an open piano means my little 4yo would play on it every so often when he walks past the piano. Can be exploring tunes of his own or tunes he's heard before, or even working out his own songs that he's doing for lessons.
Yamaha sells one, its about $40 plus for a small bottle. Otherwise, if you do not want to spend too much, you can buy Pledge from any supermarket, it does a great job too!

I just cannot stand the dust all over the piano, it does not help even with a full size piano cover, so always have those microfiber cloth beside the piano on standby mode 😂

    • RE: Teacher 123qwesz : Piano Q&A

      slmkhoo:

Typically how long would these courses last? How many sessions/hours per week? What are the fees like? Do they have holiday crash courses? Any within easy reach of Queenstown? Asking for my 14yo daughter who plays guitar for fun but hasn't learned music formally. She would be interested to learn some formal theory.

Alternatively, is there a good website where she can self-learn? I can help her a bit as I learned as a child, but can't really teach properly.
If you are talking about the lower grade, I think your daughter can attempt to learn on her own by doing those theory books available in book stores if she already have some basic background. E.g. Lina Ng is pretty self-explanatory. There are abundance of help and information on the internet as well. 🙂

Too bad I don't know you then. haha. I engaged a piano tr last time just solely to teach my elder boy who plays violin for his grade 5 theory. They worked at it for 4mths before the exam. Eventually he wanted to do the higher grades. He's doing the gr 8 theory this coming exam. I sent him to a music school nearby. Only the Principal teaches the high grades for theory.
Does that school happen to be in Kovan area?

And even if it was back then, I think I wouldn't have such luck too as I'm now cutting down on my teaching time haha.

I had a student has that slow-fall device attached. The mum purposely bought it as she was worried the piano lid might accidentally snap onto the kids fingers. It works as well as the in-built ones in recent pianos.

For marks, you can always clean it off using those appropriate cleaning chemicals. If you have young kids, it would be good to have that around just to have that peace of mind.

How to remove scratches caused by books?

If there are really a lot of scratches and very obvious ones too, you can send it for repainting and polishing at piano workshops. But its going to be quite expensive. . .

An unorthodox manner that was used on my friend's piano when a tuner dropped his screw driver and caused a huge scratch on her piano was, he simply used a black marker to colour onto the scratch. Pissed my friend off very very badly though.

I know of a teacher who teaches theory only, most of those students that seeks theory lessons from her are usually those whose main instrument isn't piano. If you would like her contact, you can let me know 🙂
