      @AWSP,

For my DC1, score was 270+ whereas for DC2 the score was 260+. So for DC2, the score was actually near cut off for the school he wanted to go.

Now, does knowing top score from each school and list of top scorers help me for deciding which school to apply for? The answer is No. We just put the top 3 choices (or was it 5 - I can't recall) based on the preference and wait for the result.

In any case based on the information that is being posted, I don't think one gets enough information to judge how the overall cohort results have turned out to be for that year.

And no - I am not suggesting to any parents not to go for IP school etc. If the child does well, by all means get into IP school but please don't make it as the goal. The goal still needs to be the learning, enjoying the learning process and most importantly character and values.

It is really sickening to see how stressful it has become for our 12 year olds:

I beg to differ with you. The secondary school booklet published by MOE already provides cutoff of past PSLE scores. If MOE is not releasing comprehensive data re: PSLE top score, second guessing based on unverified information here doesn't help. In any case when you apply for school, you can put multiple choices - so whatever it is, your children gets the best available choice based on his/her results and availability.

last year's cohort performance is different from this year. For those whose points hover around the cut off, the information is important so as not waste the choices. Of course if your child's score is 270+ as you have indicated, you wouldnt have bothered

It is one thing for parents to motivate their children to do best but it is completely unnecessary obsession with getting into top schools that is the real root of the problem.

Having the information to decide wisely does not mean that you are obssessed with getting into top schools. You have indicated that your kids are in the top schools.
I have 2 kids as well and I am also glad that they are in IP schools. However I cannot persuade myself to hold moral highground and tell others not to be \"obsessed\" with the better schools when we know that the schools are differentiated and thats the reality. On what grounds can we persuade others that all schools are the same, when we put our children into the IP schools?

I dont agree with all of the above.
My experience with the posting here is that this is a good form of sharing information, nothing to do with boasting or comparing or adding stress to the children.
Most the postings in the past were really trying to dissect the profile of the cohort given the already little amount of information. An example is where the top 3% cut off line is so that the parents and students can make an informed decision in the schools to choose.
Blacking out the information is not the way to go. MOE should instead focus on raising the standards of the neighbourhood schools so that there is less premia in the \"branded schools\".

    • RE: PSLE 2012 - Results Discussion

      Folks,

As a parent of two secondary school children who already cleared PSLE few years ago, my sincere suggestion and request to please heed to what our Government is trying to do and do not post PSLE top scores here (with all due respect to kiasuparents.com).

Allow me to share my own experience. My both children did very well in their PSLE exams, they both I reckon are in top 2 / 3% of their cohort, are in top school. So as a parent naturally I was happy and proud when my two children’s PSLE scores came out.

However, I realized that it was not quite right on my part to share my children’s PSLE scores with my friends - as they make them feel bad about their own children. I realized this much later and I really feel bad about it myself.

In fact, I remember clearly that when we went to school to collect PSLE results, I saw number of children cry when their results didn’t match their expectations and they felt let down. In the joy of my own children’s success, I didn’t realize implication of this at that time but later on I realize - it is so cruel and unnecessary for children at the tender age of 12.

We all ought to love our children, motivate them to do well but at the same time let’s not subject them to stress at such young.

No other developed country in the world has such a stratification of children with high stake national public exam at the age of 12.

So, please - I can very well understand parent’s anxiety etc. - but please refrain from disclosing top PSLE results.

Our children’s well being and their development depends on many more factors - not just PSLE results.

      Thank you.
